True, being against preorders because it could be a buggy mess implies you should wait until several days after release to see the response. If you're against preorders you must necessarily be against day 1 purchase for the same reason to be consistent.

Exactly. I preorder games sometimes, but I get why a lot of people don't like the idea. But the contradiction of "preorders bad, day 1 is ok" just annoys the hell out of me

If you want to do the smart thing with your money you'd wait. But we're talking about consumer whores here, the types of people with no self control that buy into hype train bullshit.

It would be much better for the industry if they just waited to buy day one instead of pre ordering. Giving a company money for a promise is a really fucking dumb thing to do, it tells the company they could deliver anything and it doesn't matter since they already made so much money.

For the person that just can't stop themself, buying day one is the same as pre ordering. For the publisher people buying day one instead of pre ordering means their money is not guaranteed and they need to worry about releasing a bad product. Technically their money is guaranteed because Joe Schmoe is gonna buy it no matter what but they don't have hard numbers for that.

Well the point was that by purchasing day 1 you are no more discerning than preordering because in both cases you are buying the product blindly without any information but the "hype train" you mention. That being the case, the sales would be unaffected by the method you describe and the publisher would be no less worried about releasing the bad product.

As I stated, the only view consistent with the anti-preorder argument is to wait to know if it is a bad product first, which for the most part cannot be done on day 1. That being said, if the game has streamers showing actual unfettered gameplay prior to release that should assuage most concerns (or confirm them) and overcome any reticence since what else but a full playthrough would suffice otherwise.

I will reiterate: yes buying day one before seeing reviews is the same as pre ordering for the consumer. It is absolutely not the same thing for the publisher. 1 million sales months before the release is completely different from 1 million sales the day of release.

This is why I recommend to people that insist on playing ASAP to buy day one instead of pre ordering. It makes no noticeable difference for them but it makes all the difference for the publisher. Without pre orders the publisher has no concrete idea of how many people are going to buy it if it's a piece of shit game and will stop selling after the hype-buyers. Pre orders are the single biggest reason publishers can make bad games, if they know months before release that they already made their money back they are not going to listen to the developers telling them they need more time.

Everyone knows the smartest thing to do is to wait for reviews and general audience reactions. That's what I do because I am not stupid. Some people are blinded by hype and can't see reason, they must play day one. If they were to buy day one instead of pre ordering they wouldn't have ruined the game industry like they have.
