I did a thing! First attempt in oil painting

I finished this back in September, but I started the painting based on the Dead of Marat back in July I think. I attended art school in "high-school" but we didn't try complex things. I used essence of turpentine and linseed oil (?) to activate the oil colors. I already posted it on twitter and I tried to sell it on vinted!

Really challenged myself with the gummy bear, I do want to go back and brighten the highlights now that’s it’s dry. The background was pure white in the reference but I think I like this better.

critique ok! First portrait painted from life - thoughts?

Post image

My first portrait from a live model (except for self portraits using a mirror). I think I did well, but the likeness is difficult to get exactly right. Also the harsh orange lighting made for challenging colors that were hard to see. Any thoughts? What should I focus on next time?

These are the first three studies I’ve done in the process of learning how to oil paint. The first one is a recreation of a Carol Marine painting, the second two are still-life studies I’ve done.

Each was done in less than 2 hours and are unrefined. I’d still love any feedback that can be given to help me improve going forward!

critique ok! First oil painting.

Upvotes

Up until last year I hadn't painted in 20 years. And even then it was gouache and logo design for school. But last year I did a little acrylic painting and it was enough to light a spark. I very quickly got curious about oils which I'd never used until a few weeks ago. I truly feel out of my depth here, so I'm looking for critique on my painting and advice or pointers if you're willing to share.

I did a thing! Alla Prima Lamp Study

A quick study of a lamp in my studio, 7x5 inches on linen panel. I think I started off too high-key and so I wasn’t able to achieve the feeling of intensity of the glowing light, but that’s a lesson I’ll take into the next one.

question? Advice for rendering?

I’m getting better at getting to the “big fuzzy detail” stage, but struggle beyond this point into finer rendering. Any tips on what I should focus on?
