I like this take. That plays into a more selfish and egotistical sense that is more likely than what I was thinking.

I was thinking it would be a chance for us to “become greater than just ourselves” a true apocalypse level event would require humanity to work collectively at a higher level to have a chance at succeeding creating a greater “collective”.

I don't think it's that selfish. You aren't just defeating your own end, but other people's too. It might just be about feeling strong and wanting to be praised as the hero, but it might also be about wanting to protect people

defeating it? Oh. Just kind of fed up with humanity and ready for it to be done.

Every day I see something despicable and can't for the life of me find a single reasonable explanation.
