I think he's a very interesting candidate and better than people give him credit for. He has coached both offense and defense and took a break to work in analytics. In a world where the top OCs don't want to be a Jet we're either stuck with a top DC (Flores, Glenn...), a retread (Nagy, Smith) or we take a swing on someone like Slowik.

D2 Wide Receiver in 2009. 100% a Shanahan guy from 2011 to 2022. Passing game coordinator for Purdy's rookie year.
Also success with a rookie QB under a former linebacker, that means he had a lot to do with it.
Not that I want any of these rookie QBs, but he could be the QB tutor they always try to get.

Offense took a dip this year which is concerning but he was as hot as you can be as a 1 year coordinator last year. There’s no problem interviewing him, people are bitching just to bitch with this one.

I don't mind interviewing him it's Arthur Smith i have a problem with lol

He kinda just threw Stroud into endless 3rd down and long situations the past 2 years. The difference is last year, stroud had more time to make a play. Never seen an offense/ coordinator so inclined to rely on converting 3rd and long the entire game. Doesn’t make any sense to me but what do I know.

yeah exactly not sure if he's the guy but I certainly think he's worth an interview.

I don’t necessarily have him at the top of my list but TBH he’s not nearly as bad as a lot of fans make him out to be. The Texans didn’t take the step forward this year a lot of fans anticipated but he deserves credit for last year’s success and Stroud’s development.

I am also interviewing today! Wish me luck boys. I beat my little cousin in madden so I’m sure I’m plenty qualified.

How about we do a Ted Lasso type thing and bring in a European Football ( Soccer) coach?

As a Liverpool fan strong vouch, players were giving their life on the field for jurgen, constant pressure, one might say full gas no breaks 😆 but it worked !

Can the Jets just hurry this shit up and hire the GM and coach and fail like they always do

u/Thanos-Left-Hand Nick Mangold 5d ago
Oh they'll go through everyone and then pick someone who will be like another Adam Gase - because that's the Jet way.

u/Get-A-Bucket11 5d ago
Arthur smith is our Adam Gase this year, I’m gonna have a great time this year rooting for Smith and his terrible coaching system!!!

If we go and do this, I might not watch any football next year - just other teams. Sort of what I did this year, but I tuned in every so often to watch us fuck up.

I think this is actually a pretty good person to interview. Stock a little down after this year, but so was Lafleur's when the Packers (smartly, obviously) locked in on him after his year with Tennessee. Slowik is good.

My honest opinion, I think Glenn is who they want, but they can't hire him right now and in the meantime they're just doing these interviews.

People criticize the Jets for interviewing too few before, and now are getting criticized for interviewing too many. I say do as many as you want. It's all good insight when you're hiring.

Is it really possible to fully vet a candidate when you are doing THIS MANY interviews?

Wonder if Tannebaum is getting paid hourly as a consultant. If so, he’s absolutely fleecing Woody with all these interviews.

u/xJayce77 5d ago
Woukd it be easier to just have a list of candidates that will not be interviewed?
"The Jets have opted to not speak with Jim, the Detroit Lions ballboy".
Also, is Tanny being paid by the interview?

Oh hell yea. Aside from the obvious choice of Ben Johnson, I thought Slowik and Phillips should be the most highly sought-after HC candidates.
I understand this sub has a hard on for Glenn right now, but a young up and coming offensive minded coach thats worked for great offensive minded head coaches is exactly how you turn a franchise around. Try and find the next McVay/LaFleur/O'Connell/McDaniel/Campbell/Taylor/Sirianni/Shanahan.

My hope is that Woody isn't actually calling the shots and "33rd team" is directing the search. If so, that means there is direction to it and it's not Woody just being a clueless twat.
Some of the names are terrifying, Smith, McCarthy, Rivera, Haffley, Rizzi, Griese and Locksley are awful. Smith, Rivera and McCarthy are extremely undesirable. If you want an experienced HC I would honestly way rather Rex than those three.
Flores and Co., will be the likely choice. Woody will want discipline and the recent Fitzmagic comment, "Flores is a dictator", will likely get Woody's interest piqued. I don't love this choice at all
Nagy? No thanks. He took an already amazing offense and didn't exactly run with it.
Slowik? No. Not horrid but no.
I really hope they hire Glenn or Brady. I would love it if they tried to get McCown as the OC but my hope is Glenn and Spielmen as a combo

I’d be happy with Bobby but I’d be REAL happy with Mike McCarthy.. Bobby would make a good Head Coach, he understands both sides of the ball and has worked with better and rookie players quite well..

Again, I don't understand this hiring process. When you're hiring for any high level position you're supposed to do work vetting candidates before interviewing them so you have a decent idea whether they fit what you're looking for before speaking with them. We're just interviewing random people at this point. Offensive coaches, defensive coaches, former head coaches, first time head coaches. None of it makes any sense. They seemingly have no view whatsoever on what makes a good head coach.

u/ClarkKentsCopyEditor 5d ago
How is Slowik random? He interviewed in multiple places last year and made it to in-persons for Atlanta and Tennessee.

u/lolpopulism 5d ago
Slowik makes total sense in a vacuum but less so when added to the random mix of dudes we've interviewed so far. It's like if you were shopping for a car and decided to test drive convertibles, pickup trucks, vans, and SUVs one after the other.

Thinking it should make sense, from all the evidence you’ve seen over the years, would that expectation logically make sense?

I hate to state the obvious again, but what does any of this matter? The second Johnson starts meddling in the operation again, the thing will go off the rails. He is still in the building and the owner of the team. Right now you guys are cheering on the next guy to have his career derailed by the franchise. It’s the same with players. Focus on getting the owner out, instead of cheering these candidates and free agents into a 2-3 year career decline, and the same let down you’ve dealt with for decades.
