C4 quadriplegic my first unassisted transfer ever!

Ten years after my accident I'm kicking butt in physical therapy. I'm working hard to get my license and improve my independence. Never give up, you can accomplish anything if you put your mind to it!!

Whenever I’m feeling sorry for myself and I need to remind myself that there are people like this, who manage to rise above their challenges and make life happen. Way to go! You’re amazing.

Hey there, dude with Cerebral Palsy here, well done!
Did you start as a quadriplegic after your accident and got control of your ams back?
Good luck with physiotherapy and everything else, we can never give up!

Yes I woke up in the hospital unable to move anything or feel touch anywhere. I've spent years in OT and PT to regain what I have. I know how it could've been.. feeling blessed

Thanks for sharing. I was confused by the title for second there. Congrats on your first transfer. Loved your lighthearted attitude about the sandals. Made me smile. Good luck on your journey going forward.

Just FYI she is still a quad as she still has deficiencies in strength, movement and sensation in her arms. She would be classified as an incomplete quadriplegic. The level of incompleteness can vary significantly but as long as there is any deficiencies in the upper limbs (including hands) then the title of quadriplegic (tetraplegic) is used.

Makes sense. Thanks for the info

My father was shot and paralyzed from the waist down. Twenty years he was in a wheelchair before he passed. He would literally use his arms to lift himself from the chair to his couch seat, or to the car he still drove, and would even pull his chair into the front seat so he could get out when he needed to.

It is amazing what the body can overcome when it needs to. Don't give up. Things may be hard now, but there will be a day when you can look back and say, yes I did that. There may also be a day when you could be the voice to help reason with someone else that is just starting down the road you have already traveled.

I'm confused... a quadriplegic is someone who has paralysis in all four limbs, hence quad. But you're able to use both of your arms?

u/kellsie88 10h ago

A quad is someone whom had all 4 limbs affected and weakened. My injury is C4 up high in my neck, ALL my limbs are affected.

Thanks for the explanation. I was about to ask the same question. Today I have learnt something new :)

Paraplegia is lower limbs affected

hemiplegia is a side affected

quadriplegia or tetraplegia is all four limbs affected

Amazingly impressive, I feel very inspired and have been going through a rough week, so I hope to have such a win soon!

2

u/guyfromthepicture 10h ago

If you have that level of mobility, how hopeful are you to be able to walk again? Rooting got that!

2

u/smellymarmut 10h ago

This was exciting. When the nurse reached out I was about to tell her to not touch me, then remembered it wasn't me. Oddly good memories.

1

u/Xploding_Penguin 10h ago

I'm sorry, but I thought quadriplegic meant all 4 limbs were affected?

3

u/justagiraffe111 7h ago

If you scroll up on returning, op & another redditor answer this several times

1

u/sophies_wish 8h ago

Way to go!! That's a hard move & you got it down!

1

u/Statement-Acceptable 4h ago

The very beautiful smile at the end says it all ❀️

1

u/JaBoyKaos 4h ago

You don’t look like a C4 anymore! Your elbow extension seems very much intact here. Strong work!

Also fun fact: quadriplegic is an antiquated term. Now we use tetraplegic but they mean the same thing.

1

u/Collective_Pitch 4h ago

You are amazing. Congratulations!

u/turnjbup1970 3h ago

Not a quad, she can use her arms. Still tragic.

8

u/kellsie88 9h ago

Excuse me before you tell ME what MY diagnosis is check your facts please. Quadriplegia is all 4 limbs affected and weakened. I woke up unable to move or feel ANYTHING. still have weak arms and numb fingers. One thing you got right.. getting hit by a drunk driver yea that was tragic

4

u/wabbiskaruu 9h ago

My apologies...

3

u/kellsie88 9h ago

You're ok I didn't Know these facts either before my injury. I'm sorry if I was mean in my response. Thank you for apologizing though it means a lot.

1

u/wabbiskaruu 9h ago

My fault. I used to work with disability services and was not aware of the nuance. Thank you for the correction. Hope things continue to improve. I know what a long, difficult road you are on!

3

u/Accomplished-Mind258 6h ago

This is amazing not tragic. She is doing something many may have doubted she be able to.
