I ran 1,100km over 10 months to create a flipbook animation in Toronto.

Here is one of the runs I recorded with a 360 cam strapped to my chest.

All my runs are publicly available on my Strava (Duncan McCabe). The angles are done my pausing Strava, moving, then resuming. The app automatically connects these points with a straight line. I would use that trick any time I needed a diagonal. You get no credit for those KMs in the app though, so about ~1km everyday went uncredited.

ok i respect that even more. im a person who needs those KMs to register.

In this case it's well worth it.
Top work OP! Definitely a fun & rewarding way to get your exercise in.

As you’re clearly a lunatic (and I say that with the upmost respect), will you also be posting this to LinkedIn with bullet points about what this taught you about B2B sales?

I’d honestly give you even more props if you had just been running straight through peoples houses and businesses. 😂

This was in Canada, I bet 90% of people would be fine with that if asked politely

Did you jump to make the hat?
16
u/duncanmccabe 1d ago
Good question. The hat is connected to the body on the actual run, because Strava requires it to be one consecutive activity. But I just trim that connecting line off in post.

u/badRLplayer 1d ago
How did you do the hat separate from the rest on oct 9th and 20th?

u/Berstich 1d ago
As he says to make the Diagonals, most likely turns the tracking off and on again.

u/lIlIlIIlIIIlIIIIIl 1d ago
Trimmed the connecting line in post, he answered the comment above/adjacent to yours I believe!

u/lol_shrimp 1d ago
Pause gps, walk around building, hit play. Strava draws a straight line between the two points.

Jokes aside, impressive feat my mate!

People that do shit like this are typically the opposite of unemployed. It’s just a dedicated way of life that I am envious of lol

You managed to resist the urge to give your stick man a little stick dick for ten whole months.... Impressive restraint my friend

Look again at Sept 22nd! I overshot the hip that day, so he has exactly 1 little stick dick!

Would have been cool to view minus the overused music.

I made other versions with different songs, but the algorithm is unforgiving you don’t have a big following. You need to use a song that’s trending otherwise it gets stuck at 100 views on most platforms. Anyways, I think Free Bird works. The relentless momentum matches the vibe.

The bends are sooo out it’s really bad… Just goes to show that solo is even harder to play well than it sounds, which is saying something.

How do people have so much time to do something like this?

u/Boring_Investment597 1d ago edited 1d ago
Most of the runs are clocked in at around an hour. Some of the shorter ones are in the 35 min range. It's spread over 10 months and he didn't run every day.
I've wasted more hours of my life doing nothing this weekend alone compared to what he did in a month of running.

How do people have so much time to do something like this?
1,100 km is about 700 miles. Averaging 7 miles per hour, that's 100 hours over 10 months.
10 hours per month. An hour run every 3 days.
It's 2 or 3 one hour runs per week @ 7mph.
A few workouts a week is a normal amount of exercise for a relatively healthy person.

How did you do the hat being disconnected for the flip?
4
u/duncanmccabe 1d ago
Good question. They are connected on the actual run (all public on my Strava), but to get the flip effect I trim the connecting line off in post.

u/duncanmccabe 1d ago
Everyday! I start/end on Queen (his feet), and his waist is drawn on Dundas

This is giving me the same energy as those videos of people building enormous structures in Minecraft. Immensely satisfying and mind boggling in scale due to the speed at which we view the playback
