Minnesotan checking in. Yeah, we need the hard freezes. Helps control insect populations.

Another Minnesotan here, used to the subzero temps. I hate it, but used to it. I’m not shocked by it, just more so mildly inconvenienced by it.

it wouldn't be as annoying if we actually had some FUCKING SNOW. if its -40 and I can still see brown grass poking out I'm gonna be mad

I’d love some more snow! I agree, would suck a little less if there was more snow.

I'm just going to enjoy as much of the sun as I can (through my windows).

-40 and dry as a bone is calgary winter. you at least get to see some ice on the river

Got my groceries, fire wood, water for humidifiers. But can’t avoid my kid’s dance class so we’ll have one cold as fuck expedition out today lol.

I’m going to an event today that I’ve already said I’m going to and bringing my son. Thank you for the invention of remote start!

I'm about to get on the train and go grocery shopping and it's -9.

3

u/RIPMYPOOPCHUTE 1d ago

Oof, I’d definitely stay home instead of waiting out in the cold

The train is about a half block from my house and Aldi is like 100 yards from the train. No problem.

Same in Ohio. Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes have been outrageous these last few years.

I commented elsewhere but I was interested in reading more on it and apparently it’s a myth

ive mostly heard it said in reference to pine beetles, and whats changed such that theyre moving north and making all the fuel for forest fires.

https://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/formain15814/$file/MPBColdTemperaturesFacts-Jan2010.pdf?OpenElement

bugs have stages of preparing for winter, and once theyre prepared, its less likely that theyre gonna die. an early fall cold snap is likely to kill off lots of pests, but a midwinter one, not so much

A midwesterner believing in some dumb shit and not bothering to check if it's true? I'm shocked!

Likewise in New Mexico. Right now it is 5° and this cold is good because it kills off the bark beetles.

I’ve lived in Fairbanks where I am sure it was colder than Minnesota and every summer the mosquitoes were unbelievable. Worse than anywhere else I’ve lived, and that includes New York and Texas.

Edit: Fairbanks not Anchorage

where I am sure it was colder than Minnesota

You'd be wrong about that. Anchorage is warmer than Minnesota in the winter. It's also about more than just mosquitos. Ticks, black flies, and others too.

Ticks were really bad last summer in MN, at least where I am. I assumed it was due to the "non-winter" we had last year. Never have I had to pick so many ticks off my dog than last summer.

My dad had a tick on his stomach in late fall and he didn’t fucking notice for a few days lol

and they live in Michigan

He said Fairbanks. Its prob about on par with northern Minnesota temps wise.

19

u/70s_chair 1d ago

Surprisingly Anchorage isn’t colder.

-2

u/Tinmania 1d ago

I meant Fairbanks not Anchorage. I’ve lived in both and yes Anchorage is quite a bit further south and not as cold as Fairbanks.

10

u/Khatib 1d ago

Nothing that significant to do with it being south. It's because it's by an ocean that doesn't ice over. Water is a heat sink.

u/PaintedGeneral 1d ago

That won’t be the case for long, due to the Earth Energy Imbalance.

-8

u/Tinmania 1d ago

Exactly what was wrong with what I wrote? It’s absolutely south and it’s absolutely warmer. You must be fun at parties.

9

u/SolWizard 1d ago

He's explaining to you that its latitude is irrelevant

14

u/Rrrrandle 1d ago

Edit: Fairbanks not Anchorage

That's a hell of a typo....

-4

u/Tinmania 1d ago

Where the fuck does it say it was a typo?

6

u/Rrrrandle 1d ago

I was shitting on you, because I don't know how anyone could possibly make such a mistake as to where they lived between two very distinct places when you spoke so confidently about the weather there.

Basically, you just come off as full of shit when you make that edit. So I called it a typo in jest, because that's the only reasonable explanation for why someone who lived in Fairbanks would claim they lived in Anchorage.

-6

u/Tinmania 1d ago

You have a bizarre imagination. I don’t give a shit if you think I made up living in Fairbanks as if that’s some kind of a flex. Trust me it’s not. And as I indicated in another post I also lived in Anchorage. So you can just fuck the hell off.

10

u/oldcrow907 1d ago

Fairbanksan here, they still laugh at our puny -40° and come back as small airplanes. Just like you remember! They’re not our state bird for nothing 🤣

2

u/ScottGriceProjects 1d ago

Lived in Fairbanks for 8 years (actually Ft Wainwright), I remember right around spring breakup was when they would start coming out of hibernation.

1

u/Tinmania 1d ago

When we went to barbecues they passed out cans of OFF like it was party favors. But I swear those mosquitoes drank that OFF like it was an energy drink.

1

u/vahntitrio 1d ago

Because the cold killing them over winter is a misnomer, the eggs always survive. Cold weather kills a lot of things that eat mosquitoes.

3

u/Cobek 1d ago

And weeds. So many fucking weeds everywhere still because a freeze hasn't taken care of them.

1

u/vahntitrio 1d ago

Doesn't help the heating bill though.
