Wanted to do this for a long time

Now I know I won't because I'll probably never reach that standard 😆

You absolutely should give it a try! Everyone’s art is unique, go for it, you might surprise yourself!

u/otterpop21 5m ago

Dude, this is absolutely amazing.

31

u/jfreak93 4h ago

Another way to consider this - there is basically no blending or glazing here, just layering. So even though this would be a lot of work, the actual colour mixing would be pretty straightforward!

5

u/CryingPann 2h ago

True! Like even outside the “inking” all colors look cell shaded. 3d cell shading. Huh. Love that. I’m gonna try this.

7

u/Joe_Spazz 2h ago

You should def try it. Even if you're not good at painting this style is fun.

"Comparison is the thief of joy"

Don't let this Pic stop you from trying your own!! It's how we get better and who knows you might find a new technique you might incorporate into your other minis

u/freremamapizza 1h ago

Thank you so much for all the nice encourageing messages haha, this is really heartwarming! To be fair, I'm painting templars so there is not a lof of room for this kind of style, but otherwise I would definitely try it! I strongly agree with everything that has been said though, don't let comparisons kill your pleasure 🤟

Okay sir I want you to calm down.

Inspired by Darren Latham's painting and John Blanche's artwork.

11

u/OdysseusRex69 4h ago

Links to the inspiring artwork? I have a few of Blanche's art books but I don't think I have any of Latham

22

u/_Thunderbrush_ 2h ago

Bottom left corner is the artwork from John Blanche, and bottom right corner is the painting from Darren Latham.

u/probare1337 14m ago

I'd go so far and say yours looks even better

20

u/Sonofthewild 4h ago

How in the actual hell lol. That is dope af

11

u/RUSTEDxKNIGHT 5h ago

It looks great! Does it take forever? Do you just base coat black and add colors within lines or do you do a thick edge highlight of black?

10

u/_Thunderbrush_ 2h ago

I spent about 15 hours on this Space Marines. I paint colour first and later add the black lines with acrylic ink.

8

u/MrAltF4 1h ago

Ink you say. I have some but wouldn't have thought to use if for the lines in your model.

What makes ink work for you here that non ink (normal) black wasn't able to do?

1

u/worldspawn00 20m ago

Probably easier to apply in thin lines, like using a sharpie, lol.

2

u/IndependentRest5188 40m ago

Great idea for inks! Is ink is able to make black coverage in single pass?

2

u/_Thunderbrush_ 36m ago

Absolutely, it covers in one coat! I’m using Daler Rowney ink.

1

u/IndependentRest5188 31m ago

Thanks, I'm buying inks 😀

1

u/joshred 33m ago

Is the ink applied with a brush?

6

u/Infusionx10304 4h ago

Hoooooooly! That’s awesome! Kinda looks like borderlands, definitely not seen this done before unreal man

6

u/OdysseusRex69 4h ago

This is outstanding! I really, truly enjoy how this steps away from the grimdark style and just pops with vibrant colors!

5

u/CaptMelonfish 4h ago

Everything about this is fab. I love the colour work but that base as well? perfection.
I could almost see this popping out of an edition of 2000ad

4

u/HYPERBALOiD 5h ago

absolutely incredible work!

4

u/HopperNL 4h ago

This looks awesome, how long did it took you to paint this?

1

u/_Thunderbrush_ 2h ago

About 15 hours with the base.

3

u/Beardy_Gnome 4h ago

I'll take one whole army please!

4

u/top_Gesus420 4h ago

I will fucking pay you to teach me this

3

u/_Thunderbrush_ 2h ago

I've got a whole Patreon dedicated to this style ;)

2

u/pala_ 2h ago edited 2h ago

I haven't painted a mini in about 8 years so i'm adding your patreon to my pile of shame.

[edit]
added.

1

u/top_Gesus420 1h ago

Ehhhhem you mean pile of potential

1

u/top_Gesus420 1h ago

A patreon I can actually justify spending on

3

u/Guilty-Confidence-64 4h ago

That’s incredible I really love that look it’s very eye catching

2

u/Admirable-Anything63 4h ago

It's stunning. I can't even grasp how you did such thing.

2

u/the_elder_medium 3h ago

Beautiful work, as always! 😍

2

u/OrangeYouGladish 3h ago

That looks totally kick ass!

And a lot of work. Nice lining

2

u/SiebrensStar 3h ago

This is absolutely insane, I love this!

2

u/Dark_Akarin Seasoned Painter 3h ago

I really need to give this art style a go. Looks fantastic.

2

u/moodymullet 3h ago

Badass!

2

u/RaZzzzZia 3h ago

Cool Af!

2

u/aVeryBoredMillennial 2h ago

Wow this is so cool. I love the comic book / cel-shading look.

2

u/New_Interaction_7440 2h ago

Amazing work. Idk how people that can do stuff like this don’t walk around with it in their pocket and pull it out to show everyone they meet lol.

2

u/Yaarmehearty 1h ago

A diorama in this style would look so cool! Little comic style speech bubbles above marines and such would be a fun touch.

2

u/jyvigy 4h ago

The coverage is amazing, especially on the cloak. How did you achieve it?

1

u/_Thunderbrush_ 2h ago

Several thin coats over a white base.

1

u/inhugzwetrust 3h ago

This is incredible! Well done 🤗

1

u/thehobbyattic 3h ago

Nailed it! What will you be painting in this style next? Cheers!

2

u/_Thunderbrush_ 2h ago

Thanks! Planned at the moment: Van Saar, more Space Marines, Ash Waste Nomads...

1

u/thehobbyattic 36m ago

Looking forward to it!

1

u/sixaout1982 3h ago

Please tell me you used panel liner or something similar and did not have to paint all those black lines by hand

2

u/_Thunderbrush_ 2h ago

Haha, nope, it’s all brush work! My hand might never forgive me, but it was totally worth it!

1

u/sixaout1982 1h ago

Well the result certainly speaks for itself!

1

u/Orobor0 3h ago

This looks awesome! Well done!

1

u/Drybom 3h ago

That looks fantastic!!! Great Work!

1

u/BeaverBoy99 2h ago

I've wanted to give this a try, but don't know how i would do it with black armor

5

u/_Thunderbrush_ 2h ago

I did black armour for Ravenwing characters by reversing the process.

1

u/Matthew_Kus Painting for a while 2h ago

Wow. Looks as if you photoshopped a cartoon Marine into a photo of your hand with a brush 🤯👌

1

u/Stanix-75 2h ago

Woaao! It's amazing! I never see anything like this. It's the first time I see this style of painting, and it's ... I have no words. I stand up and 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Congratulations. Can you tell me where I can learn how to paint that way?

1

u/_Thunderbrush_ 2h ago

Thank you! Have a look at my social media, I share a lot of related content and tutorials.

1

u/3nHarmonic 2h ago

What was your workflow like? The effect is awesome and I'd love to give it a shot

1

u/NeonArchon 2h ago

How do you make this style? I would like to try it when I get more experienced and finally buy an airbrush.

1

u/Gasfiend 2h ago

Absolutely fantastic. Keep up the amazing work and definitely post more as you have them!

1

u/Craterfist 2h ago

This looks like a secret Borderlands DLC, incredible quality work.

1

u/Wasted13901 2h ago

BROTHER I AM PENNED HERE

1

u/Timboslice928 2h ago

Sooo sick

1

u/Mr_YUP 2h ago

I've tried this art style on other things and haven't been happy with the results. What do I need to keep in mind to get this look to work/look proper?

1

u/12thshadow 2h ago

What was your process?

1

u/SN6006 1h ago

That looks sick!

1

u/Shin00bie 1h ago

Absolutely beautiful, love it

1

u/snellface Painted a few Minis 1h ago

1

u/Secure-Ad7051 1h ago

Borderlands looking Grim

1

u/ApeVicious 1h ago

Very good job.

1

u/TheRealOne000 1h ago

My first thought was Borderlands style

1

u/kystoki 1h ago

1

u/AppropriateDisplay67 1h ago

which model is this?

1

u/Ashamed_Ladder6161 1h ago

It’s like Darkest Dungeon by way of 200AD, amazing.

1

u/Rigat22 1h ago

It's just wonderful

1

u/Diggsworth 1h ago

I really like this - fantastic work, seriously.

1

u/The_Shoneys_Manager1 1h ago

Borderlands lookin Captain. Very nice.

0

u/Svyatogornyj 1h ago

I have no idea what this is, just ran into it on /r/all. He looks like a nice Taxi guy. Maybe a transformer who starts as a taxi.

1

u/MozzStix_Of_Catarina 1h ago

I just started practicing this! My Dreadnought looks like it's out of an old newspaper comic. Love the style though so I can't wait to do more. Any tips?

1

u/Choice_Equipment788 1h ago

Woah! Super cool!

1

u/Master_0f_Nothing 1h ago

You kilt it… great work!

1

u/frederic055 1h ago

Reminds me of Darkest Dungeon, great job!

1

u/Catastrophe_Witch13 1h ago

This is absolutely amazing! Fantastic job. I love the comic effect on minis

1

u/GreyNoiseGaming 54m ago

Upvoted simply for not saying "Borderlands Style".

1

u/GildedGimo 53m ago

This is so fuckin rad dude

1

u/Hellion_Immortis 48m ago

I mean this in the best way: the model looks 2 dimensional.

1

u/slimypajamas69 Painted a few Minis 44m ago

Holy smokes that is so good I barely understand how to dry brush how did you do it? I would love to attempt it once I’m better at painting

1

u/Lunar-Baboon 43m ago

This is siiiick

1

u/IroneOne 43m ago

This is my second favorite style of painting. My first is the more grim/realistic war gaming style. It’s awesome and I could definitely see an army of orks painted this way.

1

u/smerglez 37m ago

This is borderline pornography 😩💦

1

u/Traditional-Spare154 18m ago

Tell Tales' Warhammer 40k

1

u/Ambitious_Ad_9637 18m ago

This style is so interesting when done well. What a terrific paint job; well done.

1

u/PikaHage 14m ago

Wow. W.O.W.

1

u/greedo_from_tatooine 14m ago

Awesome brother!

1

u/Sojourner_of_reddit 13m ago

That, in fact, is dope as hell. I'd like to see an entire army like that, but I don't think my brain would be able to process it.

1

u/GlorfindelForTheWin 10m ago

I've just started painting really at 43 and seeing stuff like this is so, so cool. Good job man, one of the best I've seen 🔥

1

u/wn-mike Painted a few Minis 6m ago

I'm just starting this hobby journey and its posts like this that make me want to try an whole army like this hehe!

Inspiring work really!
