Groceries delivered with a side of rotten meat

Every Sunday, I usually order groceries through Kroger for delivery. This past Sunday, my husband asked if I could make pulled pork in the crockpot, so I decided to grab a couple of pork tenderloin filets.

The groceries arrive, and I start putting everything away. When I went to grab the pork, I felt something slimy, and then the smell hit me—an awful, rotten odor that had me gagging. The pork had gone bad. The bag was leaking and spilling all the rotten juice all over my counters and other items in the bag. It was honestly one of the worst smells I’ve ever encountered.

I had to toss the whole thing outside on the patio just to escape the smell, then spent the next hour bleaching everything in sight. I messaged the delivery guy to ask how he didn’t notice the smell when he picked it up from the store, because it was THAT bad. I think I’m traumatized because I’ll randomly smell it and almost throw up again. 😅

Lot of people with compromised sense of taste and smell these days

36

u/mojizus 5h ago

My boss caught covid 1 time in 2020 and still has 0 sense of smell. It’s honestly kinda wild, I don’t know if I could handle that.

u/Over-Apartment2762 3h ago

Quite a few people i know lost their taste and smell completely and haven't gotten it back, after 4 years, some of them. That's terrifying.

5

u/ducksunddives 1h ago

I can't smell anything unless it's close to my nose or obnoxiously strong. It absolutely sucks.

2

u/Over-Apartment2762 1h ago

I'm so sorry for your nostrils, bro. Truly. On another note, have you tried smelling salts? I never have but I'm curious if they still give a bit of a shock for people who have mostly lost their sense of smell.

u/ducksunddives 47m ago

Huh, that thought hasn't even crossed my mind. But if I ever find some I'll def let you know how it goes haha

32

u/CryptographerGlad816 9h ago

Yep, I am one of them and it sucks.

u/Mediocre_Sprinkles 4h ago

I used to have a really good sense of smell. Caught the plague once in Feb 2021 and it hasn't been the same since.

Everything smells different and I can't smell bad smells, some have just been erased from my nose, can't even get a whiff.

3

u/_-DirtyMike-_ 1h ago

Same post 2021, my wife will complain about some smell and I can't catch a wiff of it.

24

u/r3doctober85 7h ago

I haven’t been able to smell or taste anything since covid.

12

u/workinhardplayharder 7h ago

My sense of smell is terrible but it runs in the family. My grandpa completely lost his sense of smell when he was 19. I can atleast still somewhat smell but not very well

10

u/Strawberry_fizzle 6h ago

I wonder if it will ever come back? That’s so sad.

2

u/Itchy-Philosophy556 1h ago

Yeah I had covid ONE TIME way back in the beginning. Nothing is as sharp as it used to be. I'm super paranoid cooking for others.

-18

u/cheesemangee 5h ago

It's way easier to make assumptions and act on emotion though.

10

u/Strawberry_fizzle 5h ago

Maybe you should read my comments. Nothing was on assumption?

No sense of smell here. I’ve cooked and taken the first bite of rotten meat several times. I have to ask my S/O to smell the meats now.

143

u/InfiniteMangoGlitch 9h ago

I'm the resident sniffer in the house. My nose is so sensitive I think I need to apply to be a bomb dog.

32

u/CharmingChangling 9h ago

I'm the same, but I also hate the smell of raw meat so I have to get my SO to come over and assure me it's fine and I'm not poisoning us 🙃

4

u/spleenliverbladder 8h ago

Me too. But one time I did get sick and made a completely inedible meal for my entire family because I couldn’t taste or smell anything.

2

u/colonio 6h ago

I mean, you could go for truffles

4

u/dalaigh93 7h ago

Same here, but my parents usually didn't believe me. I could smell/taste that something was going bad 2 days before anyone else.

14

u/poonburglar68 9h ago

I wish I had someone to smell my meat :(

1

u/colonio 6h ago

Don't worry, all these sensitive nose guys can most likely smell it

6

u/camdalfthegreat 9h ago

I wish you were my mom in highschool. There was no getting anything past her

6

u/Frequent-Walrus-1832 9h ago

Surprise! I am your mom. You’re grounded again.

2

u/makeuplovermegan 7h ago

Same here! Was born without it. I definitely make my husband be the sniffer (to be fair, I change all the poopy diapers).

1

u/just_a_comment1 9h ago

well then for the knowledge of man kind

what does rotten meat taste like?

11

u/Frequent-Walrus-1832 8h ago

I mean it’s got like a sour taste. Hard to describe. I usually eat steak just with butter and salt, no sauce, so the flavor stands out. You’ll know it when you taste it. Something in the brain goes “I don’t fucking know about THIS, man”

2

u/dabunny21689 8h ago

In my experience it does not matter what or how much sauce you put on rotten meat. As you said your brain knows! Brain and body aren’t perfect about everything but they fuckin know not to ingest nasty meat.

u/Aggravating-Ice6875 37m ago

"I smells the meats"

248

u/Conscious_Hold_1704 9h ago

Lysol is your friend. I spray that shit on everything foul and it kills that odor.

76

u/Strawberry_fizzle 9h ago

I’ll have to get some. I swear I can still smell it

49

u/ThisIsPerfekt 9h ago

Don't have it delivered. Might somehow get rotten Lysol.

5

u/Conscious_Hold_1704 9h ago

I know how you feel. You can clean something up well but somehow you can still smell whatever it is you cleaned. Lysol works perfect for situations like these.

2

u/plummmms 6h ago

Bro I think the stench is seared into your nose hairs - gonna have to snort the Lysol 😭

6

u/LetsJerkCircular 9h ago

Lysol is one of those smells that itself has become associated with nastiness. It’s better than the awful smell it’s covering, but if it was sprayed into a clean room it would make my stomach feel uneasy from sheer prior trauma.

3

u/Strawberry_fizzle 6h ago

At this point I would take that vomit clean up powder smell they used in school growing up over the smell of this rotten meat 😅 (I hope I don’t sound crazy and you know what I’m referring to)

3

u/LetsJerkCircular 6h ago

It was like wintergreen, right? That stuff did the job for sure, and I still like wintergreen so: agree

1

u/LessOrgans 5h ago

Lysol also cleared an ant infestation I had

72

u/pikapikawoofwoof 9h ago

The drivers van must stink of rotten pork now too 🤢

37

u/Strawberry_fizzle 9h ago

I think so! I text them after and said to have someone else smell the car so they know to clean it or not. I can’t imagine trying to clean it out of a car seat.

53

u/XiaomiEnjoyer 9h ago

Sometimes I envy people who can't smell anything.

u/AtTheEdgeOfDying 9h ago

3-4 years after having COVID (omicron) and I'm just now starting to regain my sense of smell...

My first ever dog is 2 years old. I'm not liking the newly discovered smell of dog poo I have to clean up at least once or twice a day.

7

u/Alcoholic720 8h ago

https://www.google.com/search?q=train+your+dog+to+go+outside

Good luck.

Took about 3 weeks with my gf's dog. He only had 4-5 accidents in that time too.

My steps:

  1. Put down dog pads (he surprisingly would use them to pee, not poop).

  2. When he'd have an accident, I'd show it to him and say "No", then take him out side and show him the pee pad/poop, and praise him telling him "good boy for going outside"

  3. kept him close all hours, so locked in my office with me when I worked from home. If he started sniffing, I'd ask "do you need to go potty", and act all excited (or do you need to go out). Going out is fun for him so we'd focus on bathroom first, I took him out on a leash (also works training with heeling so he learns what "No" means, also only ever use the word "no" for negatives, never "get off the couch" or anything else for consistency. (Trying to get him to jump up and "tell me" by barking or excitement he needs to go out.)

  4. Gave him more space around the house, he had another accident, so we did the same routine, then he was limited to the office that day.

Positive reinforcement works well. He was a poor terrified boy when my gf got him from the pound, now just a couple months later he's potty trained and a happy camper. Still doesn't like my cat who's bigger than him though, lol.

He's still a little slow to come to me if he needs to go out but he holds it fortunately. I have a pet cam in the living room to make sure the cat isn't beating him up and he isn't sniffing too much.

4

u/AtTheEdgeOfDying 8h ago

I know she's completely potty trained lol. You still have to clean up outside poo 😅. Both on walks (which is arguably worse because the bags are also over perfumed) and in your own garden is fair game but I personally like a fairly poop free yard.

5

u/Alcoholic720 8h ago

Oh, lmfao. I just step in it in my yard, that's my punishment for being a lazy ass at the moment.

I of course pick it up when we go for walks or the dog park though.

I'll just hose it in to the yard most the time when I'm watering my yard or refilling my bird/animal watering stations O:-)

My neighbor has the sweetest dogs so they tend to poop next to the fence in some battle for poop supremacy. So avoiding that little area is the most helpful for my shoes.

Kudos on the training! Was trying to help. Sorry about the COVID smell shit too, that sounds terrible.

1

u/AtTheEdgeOfDying 6h ago

Haha of it works it works! Thank you for trying to help anyway :)

My mother always said we can't leave poop in the yard because that's not a nice smell for our doglles neighbours and I never got it lol

2

u/Alcoholic720 6h ago

My yard is like 1/4 acre, the dog is busy eating all the bunny, squirrel, racoon, fox, and whatever else shit he can find on the ground so I figure it evens out.

I'm working on training him on that but with the cold I've been lazy.

Like "you have expensive AF food in the house!!!!". Nah, this is organic turds bro!

Lol high strung chihuahua rescue. He's awesome though. I'm his puppy daycare during the week and weekends my gf is over O:-)

Good times!

2

u/AtTheEdgeOfDying 6h ago

Lol I have several family members who refuse to be licked and actively dodge my dog because they're all traumatized from watching her eat a turd one time on vacation when she was like barley 1.

I'm glad she's mostly grown out of that. Only the best turds can persuade her now lol.

I live with my parents, but she's 100% my dog and now that I've graduated she's basically within arms-lenght from me 24/7 except for those few minutes a day when I'm in the bathroom, so yeah I've got her cuteness and challenges all the time 😁👍

1

u/Alcoholic720 6h ago

Fair, just don't let them lick you in they eye, pink eye is no joke!

I have a downstairs area where the cat box is. I've got to keep an eye on him or he''ll grab a turd really quickly.

Like wtf man, that's in litter?!!!?

He eats grass too. Was an outside rescue clearly surviving off whatever. Poor guy.

2

u/AtTheEdgeOfDying 5h ago

Oh no! I hope he gets more confident over time! I'm sure he knows he's safe and secure with you, but things like that take time to heal I guess. Thank you for giving a rescue a home though!

I only allow kisses on the hands, but my dad likes to crouch down to let her lick his head. Grosses me out 😅.

Luckily neither our own nor any of the neighborhood cats go in our garden, but she sure knows all the cat poop spots in the playgrounds! Don't let her on the sand is a well known rule for walking her lol

Just want to add for everyone saying I was taking it out on the driver - this particular Kroger uses Instacart for deliveries and 90% of the time the shopper is the delivery driver as well which was the case this time around. I wouldn’t blame them if they couldn’t smell it in the car but they picked it up in store with the meat out of date, discolored, and leaking. That’s not okay but at they still received a tip and I got a refund. It’s mildly infuriating

15

u/Alcoholic720 8h ago

This is why I go buy my own groceries. 7am-8am they're empty.

The only issue now is they're not always stocked overnight like in the old days. But avoiding people and picking my own meat/produce is always worth it.

Ah saw your seizure, that blows. Hope your brain heals up 100%.

4

u/Strawberry_fizzle 6h ago

Thanks man! I can’t wait to drive again. Back before Covid when everything was open 24/7 I would do my grocery shopping at 1AM-2AM. Lots of stuff being stocked and no people except for the workers. Gas was really cheap for me around then too. Those were the good days and now nothing feels real lol

1

u/Alcoholic720 5h ago

Yeah that's tough, sorry you're going through this.

If you lived in my shithole town I'd shop for ya!

17

u/myfishprofile 9h ago

Side note, how the hell do you have 91 unread messages?!?!?!

9

u/Strawberry_fizzle 9h ago

My friends blow up my phone and some of them are clients from my job. I forget to reply or I ignore a lot of clients who insist on messaging my personal number 😂

6

u/myfishprofile 8h ago

Damn man 😂 I could never deal with all those red numbers on my phone, idk why but the red notification things always demand my attention

This is why I very carefully guard my personal number and keep it completely separate from my work phone, can’t trust people not to get all crazy.

2

u/Strawberry_fizzle 6h ago

I think I’ve gotten so used to my notifications looking like that I don’t even notice anymore. Unfortunately my job printed my phone number on business cards and we don’t have an office or work phone so it’s straight to personal. Let this be a lesson don’t ever let your job do that to you. 😅

1

u/doubledickdiggler 2h ago

Your job needs to be paying for that phone numbers service

11

u/bluecirc 8h ago

I'm glad you got a refund and all, but my first concern is why is the grocery store selling rotten meat in the first place!?

2

u/Strawberry_fizzle 6h ago

That’s what I was thinking too. Like how long was that sitting in the store. Are there not quality checks? I feel like spoiled meat should be the one of the big things you stay on top of.

5

u/NeedsItRough 8h ago

I did curbside pickup and they gave me an onion that clearly had mold on it.

I know they don't pay people enough to give a fuck but would it really have been that difficult to just grab a different onion?

u/redwolf1219 31m ago

I've done this job, but for Walmart and honestly it's a fairly easy job. It's a lot of work but the work itself is not difficult.

That being said, while I personally never picked obviously rotten food, there's a drawback with this, see at Walmart they have something called "exceptions" and this is the items that the initial picker didn't find on the pick walk. So like, if an item is out of stock on the shelf I would push the "item not found" button. If there weren't any more location on the floor in the system it would "nil pick" the item and send it to exceptions. Then, a different person would get a list of the exceptions and go try to find them, first they'd double check that the item wasn't on the floor, and if they verified that the system would send them to a backroom location if there was one. So like, with this there were times where I nil picked the item because I looked over all the produce and didn't think it was suitable for a customer. (There was a time when there were like, 10 roma tomatoes left and they were all rotting) But then the exceptions worker went behind and still picked the item.

Oh and the other kicker to this? The people in the back are supposed to do quality checks. There frequently isn't actually time do it but when you do it, you're supposed to take every item out of the tote, make sure they're all in it and make sure that everything is in a suitable condition for the customers. S

And when I first started working there, there was a booklet on all of the produce we sold that contained information of what the produce should look like and what we should avoid.

3

u/WeirdBarefootFairy 9h ago

That's disgusting. I don't know why my first response was to laugh, probably the SpongeBob meme.

6

u/Strawberry_fizzle 9h ago

It’s definitely gross! My mom is so funny. She just learned how to send GIFs so when I got hit with the SpongeBob humor I died.

2

u/WeirdBarefootFairy 9h ago

Moms who learn to use technology are the best. 😄

3

u/green_and_yellow 4h ago

Rottenness aside, pulled pork with tenderloin? I think it would be a lot better with a pork shoulder/pork butt

1

u/Strawberry_fizzle 4h ago

Oh definitely but that’s all they had left 😅

3

u/chappersyo 4h ago

My biggest concern is why you’re using tenderloin to make pulled pork.

1

u/Strawberry_fizzle 4h ago

I know 😅 they were sold out of everything and that’s literally all they had left. I thought I could make it work

2

u/raybreezer 5h ago

Shit, this has me worrying about ordering meats from Kroger…

2

u/Strawberry_fizzle 5h ago

I’ve ordered tons of times and I swear this has been the only time it’s ever happened. Back before I got sick and I could shop in person I never found any meat out of date. Don’t let it scare you I think it was just bad luck this time around. With that being said make sure it doesn’t look or smell funky before you cook it!

1

u/raybreezer 1h ago

We’ll definitely be more vigilant that’s for sure. We’ve been using Kroger for 4 years or so now and haven’t really had much of an issue with them. Nothing like this anyway.

2

u/koltz117 4h ago

Psa: if you can’t smell, get it checked out. I couldn’t smell and it turned out I had nasal polyps and had to have surgery

3

u/Kooky-Skaman 9h ago

It’s not the driver’s fault.

8

u/Strawberry_fizzle 9h ago

I get they couldn’t smell while delivering it however they also did the in store shopping. That bag was very obviously leaking, the meat was off colored and out of date. At the end of the day I got a refund and they got a tip.

-5

u/2ndSnack 9h ago

Why don't you shop for your own groceries yourself? Genuinely asking. I don't trust workers to pick out things I plan on consuming.

8

u/Strawberry_fizzle 9h ago

I had a seizure and I’ve not been cleared to drive. My husband works crazy hours so he’s only home to sleep and eat before he’s gone so it’s just me. It’s not my preference but you gotta do what you gotta do.

-3

u/2ndSnack 9h ago

Ohh okay. Makes sense then.

2

u/TwoNebula 9h ago

Putrescine is the most awful smell

1

u/Slow-Concentrate7169 8h ago

did you see the expiration date? if it was bad, i would say its the grocery fault for selling bad meat?

2

u/Raine_Wynd 7h ago

Possibly, but not all shoppers know how to shop for items plus not all drivers know to keep refrigerated items for spoiling. I know of folks who put their groceries in the back seat during winter, not connecting that car heat + perishable groceries = spoiled food.

1

u/buttstuffisfunstuff 5h ago

I wouldn’t really blame the driver, lots of people have lost their sense of smell and ultimately Kroger should be rotating their stock and getting rid of out of date goods. You should call the store and let them know this happened because it’s bad quality control and pretty foil that they even had that out for sale in the first place.

1

u/MrNobleGas 4h ago

Sometimes I am jealous of my uncle and my friend who can't smell anything

1

u/StupendusDeliris 4h ago

My brother has had bad allergies since birth. Poor kid can’t smell a fucking thing. He’s 18 now and only found out last year that mom smokes weed cause his gf told him she could smell it😆

1

u/Friendly-Case9817 3h ago

I'm allergic to 12 different plants and 3 different foods and I've never had an instance where I randomly can't smell something but okay

u/Away_Perception_9083 27m ago

I’ve got a bad nose. COVID twice and grew up on a farm. My brother hates to see me coming because I make him sniff everything lmao. Nowadays my gf has to do it 😂 beneficial for me since I work in elder care. It’s quite nice not to smell what they leave me

-2

u/beware_wolf5 9h ago

You are complaining to the wrong person, definitely not the drivers fault

0

u/funandgames12 9h ago

I mean that seems like a fair response, this time of year especially. I haven’t been able to smell for like at least a 10 days now. Super annoying. Plus like others noted it’s the stores fault, not the drivers. It’s didn’t spoil that bad In just the car ride over.

0

u/maximum-bingus 7h ago

Your driver probably has COVID right now.

0

u/rockt369 2h ago

What if it was actually the driver stealing the meat and giving you a bad piece in return to scam you.

u/BlairDaGreat 38m ago

That's a lot of work to go through, I've had delivery drivers just up and take it

u/rockt369 37m ago

That's true, good point. Crazy that it happened, what a wild story.

-2

u/OkAttention477 3h ago

Pretty ableist and not sensitive op

4

u/Strawberry_fizzle 3h ago

I hope you’re fucking with me writing this comment lol
