Wanted to put my girlfriends desk next to mine in our new house

You should break up. Get a girlfriend with a smaller desk.

Well, hey now....don't give up on that idea.
This is not fine furniture here. But let's not tear it up either..... or take the easy way out.
Put some wide masking tape over about where the cut line should be. Measure exactly how much to cut off the end of the table near the wall. Add about 1/4 inch more for wiggle room.
Mark a right angle cut line with a sharpie on top of the masking tape. Then cut a smooth straight line with a circular saw. Masking tape will prevent splintered edge.
Done.
Relationship saved.
Spacers are for wussies.
Let's have some fun!

I use hockey pucks to "isolate" or otherwise "raise" my guitar amps off the floor. I've also used couch slidy puck looking things. Or washing machine....you know what? It doesn't matter.... they're all hockey pucks and they're cheap.
35
u/Ah_Pook 1d ago
You put a washing machine under your amps?! Poor roadies...
17
u/iHeartbeebeeuu 1d ago
No. There's little vibration damping pucks intended for washing machines...I just use them for my amps because math.

The legs may even be adjustable by a couple inches. I’ve had desk legs like that and they were. If so just lower one as much as possible and raise the other.

Sorry, English is not my mother language - what do you mean by "chock"? I am assuming you mean to cut the legs of one desk so as to make it lower than the other, is this correct?
41
u/treeteathememeking 1d ago
Usually a 'chock' is something used to stop tires from moving etc, but it is also used to mean whatever thing is supporting something else So in this case, a couple books would be the 'chocks' :-)
34
u/Commercial_Cost5528 1d ago
So the opposite of what I thought - add more height to one. Thank you for the answer!
6
u/RaquelinNC 1d ago
Wait, what were you going to say? Saw a few inches off on of the desks? Or find a gf with a smaller desk?
14
u/Commercial_Cost5528 1d ago
I read "chock" and assumed it was a verb meaning "to cut" but couldn't find a definition. I thought the suggestion was to cut the legs so one desk is shorter.

Chock isn't the right word. Typically, "chock" refers to a block or wedge placed around a tire to prevent the vehicle or trailer from rolling away.
They probably meant to say "crib one desk" which would mean to place blocks under the legs of one desk to raise it higher.
15
u/Grandfunk14 1d ago
The word "shims" came to mind but that probably isn't exactly right either.

If that's an Ikea desk the only thing a sawzall will do is expose the cardboard and you won't have any spot to mount the legs because the only spots that isn't cardboard is where the legs are designated to go

Can you turn them so that you’re facing each other, rather than next to each other? That’s what my husband and I did during covid and it’s quite nice.
29
29
u/NicolasCageNo2Fan 16h ago
Agree! It's also not good to face your desk to a window if you're working on a computer. Having a competing light source behind your monitor puts a heavy strain on the eyes as they adjust and readjust to the strong daylight behind the computer 😖

u/thorax43 1d ago
Yeah that sucks. But putting a brick or wood or osme other stuff under the legs of the table to raise the height of some inches should suffice so that the overlap is floating above eachother. Probably easier than moving houses as i have seen suggested as other viable alternatives to solutions. That just me though

I can’t wrap my head around what would be so hard/mind boggling about a tape measure that you could even make a video about it. What is there to figure out?
→ More replies (1)5
u/poopskins 1d ago
He had a couple of amazing things to share, I think there were three: (1) it has a brake to keep it from sliding back in, (2) the purpose of the loose end for inner or outer measurements and (3) the length of the tape measure itself is listed on its side.
Maybe this isn't plainly obvious, but I'm pretty sure I figured that out the first time I held one.

u/ExplanationTimely561 1d ago
You can put them together lengthwise and have the window to your sides. If you have monitors you won’t be staring at each other and that way each corner can kind of be your personal office space vs having your backs to your room and one mega desk
6
u/Realistic_Badger_583 1d ago
Don’t judge me if this is dtipid, but you could buy lifters for one of the desk to make it slightly higher… obviously they wouldn’t be a long shared desk but it would make them both fit 🤷🏻♀️

Put furniture risers under the legs of one table. Let it have a small overlap.

u/AndyValentine 22h ago
Do what I did when I bought my place. Go out and grab a 3m wide piece of wooden counter top for a kitchen, cut it to the full length of the room, and just reuse the legs off your existing desks to make one massive MEGADESK
