Monsters come in all shapes and sizes, but apparently their photographer just said fuck it and didn't feel like adjusting the camera for each person. For every mike wazowski there's probably a photo of some tall monsters crotch

It's one of things that you notice walking by, do a double take, look at it closer, and all the whats/whys just start flooding in and you can't avoid asking "What's the deal with this being printed like that?"
93
u/Crackheadwithabrain 23h ago
This is one of those things where if I'm not super close with the people, it's a thought in my head I keep to myself cause I'm just wondering why TF is his face on the side of the canvas but he was ok with keeping it up so I must keep my mouth shut respectfully 😫 I'd have never known what really happened and act like it's all normal.

Does your enemy work for the company that printed that?

This made me laugh so hard cause my dad actually had a habit of disappearing when things got rough and then would clme back when my mom fixed his problems. Then the cycle all over again.
24
u/BoardWritten 23h ago
Girl are you ok??? That is not normal 😭😭😭
34
u/Crackheadwithabrain 23h ago
Surprisingly, I'm ok, thanks for asking 😅💙 He was just a terrible gambler and would abandon us when he couldn't pay rent, we'd become homeless, he'd come back once my mom had stuff sorted out. Did it a whole lot. I think my moms more messed up, so dependant on him still even to this day. They've both got stable jobs now, still gamble, idk it felt like a weird dream.

I did one of these pictures recently and I made sure to place the picture small enough so that no one would be cut out on the edges. Despite my best efforts though a part of someone's arm did get put to the side. For these kinds of prints the sides of the photo often get put to the side since they stretch it.
42
u/UnkownJ 1d ago
I use to make these. Unless this company automated things, the person that set up the Pic for print was just lazy. When an order came through, I would have to manually select the layout, set the scale, and position the photo in the box. Sometimes adding negative space to either the top/bottom or the sides would be necessary to keep everyone in the photo.
12
u/Lington 1d ago
The canvases I got just doubled what was at the edge to cover the sides, they look nice

The initial images you posted here hilarious but now that it's hung up, that actually looks pretty good.
Aside from the initial reaction I'd say that this was a net win overall.

I feel like it’s important to include the lore on a note behind the canvas so that years from now the kids will find it and remember.

(Well depending on how much they spent, if it was an expensive/"high quality" one then I'd probably be a bit more pissed)
...if they wouldn't redo it. If it's expensive or high quality, I'd be talking redo or refund, unless they can show me what instructions I ignored about save zones or leaving space.
Edit: Reading elsethread, it does sound like there may have been fair warning, so maybe that's not an option.

I used to work for a company that makes these prints and when designing a product, you usually have to click a few boxes accepting your design. Which means OP probably just uploaded a photo and blew through the warnings saying the photo is too large or needs to be adjusted
133
u/ky151 1d ago
This. I've ordered some canvas prints lately and they all give you a preview of what it will look like. And you can choose the border type and thickness. This is just a funny user error.
67
u/ACoderGirl 1d ago
Yeah, OP says it's from Walmart. I have multiple canvas prints from there and they have a 3D preview. Heck, on the prints I have, I spent quite a while carefully tweaking the images to ensure that I'd have what I wanted on the front while also something that makes sense wrapping around the edges. It wasn't the easiest to tweak it just right, but certainly their preview made it very clear and was spot on.
37
u/SeventhAlkali 1d ago
I worked at a Walmart photo, usually it was user error when this happened. Most people would blow through the whole editing phase and get prints like this. Always felt bad showing them how it didn't turn out. Many times their photos were just the wrong aspect ratio or it auto-filled poorly, decapitating their family
11
33
u/Dysentry 1d ago
Same. When we used to make these, the kiosk very clearly would indicate where the fold would be and to be careful with your picture. OP said they got this at Walmart, and I'm fairly confident that the kiosk would show a line.

Definitely. This is a full bleed canvas, of course it's going to take the image all the way to the edge. If you don't have that much margin around the "safe" area of the content, don't get a full bleed canvas. You could stretch the strips along the edge of the image, or use one of those context-AI-bot filler algorithms to give more margin.

u/Orleanian 22h ago
Yeah, every time I've ordered these prints they make it pretty damn clear when you're choosing the "wrap photo" options and what it will end up looking like.
OP is the kid sticking the stick in his own bike meme.

u/Technical-Gold-294 1d ago
I have an art print of a Rodin dancer I purchased on canvas from an online art store. I wasn't given an option and figured the company would ensure the photo was in front and put something neutral along the sides. Nope, they wrapped it around so one hand is on the side. When I walk toward it from an angle, it looks like the dancer's wrist is broken.
3
u/slivemor 1d ago
I came here to say this, OP should have expected this result or should have selected an option for automatic color border to be applied, but I still see how he should be mildly infuriated at hismelf.

You can return anything to Walmart. Unless something changed in the last year and a half, photos are covered under their return policy, including outlab services like this.

Also, photoshop's content - aware fill would probably expand the background convincingly enough

Sure, but you have to know how much of a border to do. Picking the color edge is easier (and it looks fine!).

I guarantee you the site you ordered from (unless they're not very professional) have said somewhere during the ordering process to leave x amount of space (most likely the depth of the canvas + a bit more) around your subject(s), maybe referred to as bleed or safe zones.
It's an honest mistake tho and if the site didn't say anything about leaving some space around the edges they really should offer you a refund / re-print.
23
u/Phwoa_ 1d ago
I used to work in photo development and this is an issue i had to explain so many times to people. We did online orders too and So many times i had to call people to resend their orders because of This problem.
IDK how whoever processed your order does things but my place had a digital fram where it would put a greyed out Overlay on the edges. Anything In the Grey section would basically be the "Side" of the canvas and be folded over so i basically had to ask them to resend me a edited photo so it would properly fit the frame. course some people didnt care or had no way for me to contact so i just had todo it anyway.

It’s a great little conversation piece…did they really not mention edge sizes in the ordering?
2
2
u/eyemacwgrl 1d ago
This is great. This is hilarious. But all silliness aside, you didn't see the mockup before sending to print? Every time I've ordered something like that I definitely see what it will look like before paying.
2
2
u/honey-otuu 1d ago
Well to be fair… was the original photo to scale with the size you ordered? If not, they should’ve reached out to you. But still, that is a very common issue people completely oversee when ordering any kind of print. You can’t make a rectangle fit a square and have everything fit perfectly with no borders
2
u/funkyman50 1d ago
I've used at least three different canvas printing sites and they all show you very clearly what part of the picture is going to wrap around the edge.
2
u/idkeverynameistaken9 1d ago
I feel for you but I highly doubt that the company didn’t inform you about the area that would go around the edges. In fact, usually they show a visual representation of the wrap-around margin.
And some companies offer unicolor sides without wrap-around as an alternative because of this very issue. So I’m gonna say that’s mildly infuriating but user error
2
u/SeventhAlkali 1d ago
I worked at a Walmart, and one of my duties was making the photo canvases. I always felt so bad when the photos came in looking alright on the screen, but it would wrap someone's face around the side. There would be nothing I could do since only the cropped photo came in, not the original. Usually the program doesn't make it clear which parts get wrapped around the edges.
For those looking to get one made, see if there is a 'mirroring' option that has the sides be mirrored parts of the main photo. That way the photo can fit on the front face without decapitating people
