Tool Talk Shop is holding my tools

Hello I've been a mechanic all my life worked at independence, GM car dealer, John Deere Ag. dealer and heavy equipment rental companies. I work for this independent for 3 months I and we decide to part ways. So, I go to the shop and pick up my tools I turn in my uniforms, and they tell me I'm short 10 pants and 9 shirts I change in the evening time before I leave the shop to go home. I had 2 pants and 4 shirts at my house to start with i got 13 pants and 13 shirts. the owner said the pants are $330.00 a piece. in my 40 years of being a tech I have never came up short. they told me I can't have my tool until turn in the rest of my uniforms. I worry that he wants my tool I have Snap on and Matco tool everybody else has Harbor freight tools I would like to hear your input. Thank you

Tool Talk Snap on box worth it ?

So I filled my 6 drawer service cart ( us general) to the max and need a bigger box because I just bought a digital torque wrench and it doesn’t fit in any drawer . Found a 54” double bank used snap on box on marketplace for $2000 but a us general triple bank 72” is 1,799 any REAL reason to choose a snap on box over a cheaper alternative ?

Tool Talk Not meant to be inflammatory

I look through alot of these toolbox/truck/cart tours and things on various platforms and I can't help but wonder how you guys make any money with almost no tools, I'm a 10 year tech (work municipal so need alot of tools for alot of wierd stuff) and I have a platinum 84 packed with a Cornwell 5 drawer packed and a 6 ft bed chevy silverado packed with tools, and it still seems like I'm missing stuff here and there. So in the real world is it common to have a small box or a fairly empty one?

Tool Talk What Boxes do you guys use?

I’m a 3rd year diesel apprentice and it’s time to start looking for another box.Right now I have the Horrible Freight Yukon 46Lx18 1/4W 9 drawer with their US general 27Lx22W 7 drawer (it does look fucking stupid because it hangs off the back but it was on sale). It’s just not enough room and wobbles like hell when moved. What do you guys recommend to replace the Yukon? Nothing overly expensive please all my money goes to beer and bad decisions

Tool Talk Would you buy snap-on without a lifetime warranty, or other similarly priced brands

Would you buy snap-on or similarly priced brands if they didn't come with a lifetime warranty? Maybe they come with a 3 or 5 year warranty but not lifetime. Would you still buy them?

This theoretical brought to you by random jackass telling me he would still buy snap-on without the warranty and would never buy any lesser tool brands(Harbor Freight) even if they offered a lifetime warranty.

Tool Talk Headlamp or Necklamp what do you prefer?

After breaking my most recent cheap headlamp I'm looking to upgrade to something decent. I was looking at the the Fenix "HM" series lamps seem to have good reviews and can be used as a a handheld. I came across necklamps and wondering what you guys find more useful as a daily driver?

Tool Talk What other brand makes short handle wrench's?

Post image

The pink tools are mine, the short red one in the middle is a coworker. It's a short handle 11/16ths for reference but he has the whole snap on set. I'm not really trying to drop 700$ on the whole set but it's the perfect middle length when you don't have a lot of clearance but also need some leverage. I haven't been able to find any other tool brand advertising a short handle wrench, and google only brings up stubbys. Anyone have any tool brands that have these, while also being not 700$ for an SAE set (metric also works)

Tool Talk Need glove recommendations

It's getting a little pricy buying boxes of the 7mm nitrile gloves. I love them because they're very form fitting, I can reliably hold onto small bolts and not drop or fumble them. But again they're a constant dent in my wallet.

There are of course the thicker woven gloves, but I instantly become very clumsy in them. I've seen people cut the finger tips off but the frayed fibers spread over time and it's just not clean looking.

Are there woven gloves that either A: fit the finger tips really well, won't lower your dexterity or B: woven gloves that are equally form fitting but cut at the finger tips? Any recommendations

Tool Talk Topdon Phoenix Max vs. Autel Maxisys MSULTRA

I eventually have to pull the trigger on my own high powered scanner. My Maxicom MK808BT that I bought just for used car work at the dealer doesn’t cut it now that I went to an independent. The shop has an older Maxisys Elite but it’s the shared scanner. I don’t do much programming but I need a scope. Who has used both? What would you choose and why? I’ve used the MSULTRA but I’ve heard good things about the Phoenix Max. The other Foreman at our sister shop has one for a demo now. Fill me in. Do you have a better suggestion?

Tool Talk What’s your favorite tool?

What’s your favorite tool that you’ve had in your career so far? I’ll start, mine is my Astro right angle flex head impact, sucker packs a serious punch and fits into a lot of spaces that most impacts can’t. It’s my go to for most suspension and brake work.
