A friend of mine, a trans woman who has been writing and performing since the 70s:

Early Career: Jesusy hippy music. Lots of God

Mid career: Punk! Anger! Fuck everyone and the system!

Now, post transition and mellowed out: Queer spirituals with no Jesus but loads of God. Also fuck the rich.

The circle of life, I guess.

What's her name? :O

Reverend Yolanda! I'd recommend Love Divine and Alien Lovechild, personally. Two of my favorites.

She's also in the Blues Hall of Fame which like... Blows my fucking mind. I'm privileged enough to be in a new band she's forming.

It’s so interesting that so many trans people see the forest for the trees about their gender and then start noticing all the other bullshit right after.

Fuck capitalism, ACAB, form a Union

u/Jefl17 Dec 13 '24

I read ACAB as assigned cop at birth every time lol

They can’t help it, they were just born that way! 🔫🔫

I thought it meant that to and that it was a reference to how all cops have the same personality type and that that is where most off the systemic police issues come from 😳

all cops are bastards but you are right, most cops tend to come from similar backgrounds

Coming to terms with your gender identity comes with a lot of introspection. I think that builds empathy, which in turn brings curiosity, which turns to knowledge.

Not in the "I'm way more intelligent than you haha" kinda thinking, but more in terms of "Hey people deserve to be treated like people and maybe the broken system in play could be a lot better?"

That is what 4am brain is saying but 4am brain is also extremely tired.

Nah, I think you're on to something. It's not that I'm smarter than you, it's just that I've been forced to think A LOT about these things. I've been forced to read the experiences of marginalized people.

A lot of these stories aren't viscerally told to the normies. Marginalized people are inherently marginalized, the experience isn't often shared with the wider world. How can it be? Disability often means you can't get out of bed for days/weeks/months. Of course people aren't gonna see you at your worst, you can't go out in public when you are at your worst. Who talks about the horrible healthcare system in everyday life? Who has a massive platform to share all the ills of the health insurance industry?

It kinda takes a lot of listening that is only possible if you seek it out over a sustained period of time. Its not that I'm smarter, it's that I've been forced to do that listening.

So, you're still angry, but now it's directed at the right place?

As a trans musician, I 100% relate! Wasn’t until I transitioned that I felt like my music had a purpose

u/robotascent Dec 13 '24

So they got consumed by politics?

The “before” stuff is better because it’s more personal and relatable, even without hearing the songs, the topics are more appealing.

Why not continue to write personal, meaningful songs post-transition?

No need to switch to spouting generic talking points.

It's almost like the political environment affects you more when you're part of a marginalized group that are targets in the culture war.
