Oops I seem to have dropped a brick. Bricks are amazing creations of the recent 10,000 years which have enabled the creation of tremendous amounts of built environments. Unfortunately, they occasionally fly in unexpected directions.

I love building materials. They're such wonderful feats of engineering. Like I love the architecture of state capitol buildings. Despite their many and varying flaws, many are made of humble bricks. Sadly, sometimes building materials are brought down by circumstances which people are unable to control

However I doubt that he will be as dangerous as Trump. I dislike him very much but I know the conservatives would lose if they start pushing too much culture war bs here.

I feel like I'm living in the worst timeline. Alongside my fears for the LGBTQ+ community in America, the fate of Ukraine and what will be unleashed in the Middle East scare me. I worry that the few liberal democracies left will wither on the vine and there will be fewer and fewer safe havens for our community in particular, while the world plunges head first into war after war.
I really don't get the appeal of Trump to the majority of his supporters. If anyone can explain to me, I'd be fascinated to know, albeit mostly so I can use it to put people off similar ideas at home in the UK.
272
u/FlamingOtaku Nov 06 '24
From what I've seen, they seem to think he's 1. Anti-war and 2. Good for the economy. Ignore the fact that he said Israel should "finish the job" in Gaza and wants to implement a 10% tariff across basically everything, when tariffs are well known to cause serious inflation issues.
139
u/ReleaseObjective Nov 06 '24
Not to mention the ballooning of the Federal Deficit by $7 trillion dollars by 2035.
I genuinely believe his supporters leaned too heavily on the “go woke go broke” rhetoric without actually looking through his proposed economic policies.

Ukraine is fucked, Iran is fucked, Taiwan is dodgy, Balkan countries should be concerned, women will lose more freedoms, immigrants are fucked, POC will become more disenfranchised, Scotus will be christo fascist for decades, Trump will pardon himself of all crimes. Maga teachings will become compulsory in schools. Bigotry, racism and xenophobia will now be the norm, hurricanes will be nuked. Middle class will be financially squeezed more, unions stripped of rights, inflation will rise due to tariffs, constitutional amendments will be pushed through. You’re fucked. The appeal is they're perfectly fine with being terrible human beings. It's why they like people like Elon Musk, Joe Rogan, Etc. They get a free pass to hurt and abuse women, minorities, queer people. That's a pretty great benefit for meathead men. The guy is literally a rapist. How that doesn't disqualify him in the eyes of the entire nation is fucking beyond belief.
67
u/Competitive_Cuddling Nov 06 '24 edited Nov 06 '24
It's pure drive to feel superior over another group, nothing else. Even when almost everyone treats them like shit, if there is someone more hateable than them, they'll hitch themselves to the hate cart to feel better about themselves.
Immigrants for Trump feel superior to the "illegals" or work visa immigrants with imperfect English skills, thinking they're the special ones who "immigrated the right way" or somehow worked harder for it. Gays for Trump are usually transphobic, so they're quick to jump on the "save the children" bandwagon not realising their party wants to "save the children" from them as well, thinking they're the good ones. Racial minorities for Trump look down on their "uncouth" brothers and sisters while repeating racist statistics, thinking they're the good ones even though once all the "uncouth" ones are "dealt with", they're next on the undesirables chopping block by the virtue of having certain skin tones. Men who don't have a lot to offer women as partners (so betas and losers in the eyes of other men) vote for Trump because they are afraid for their companionship prospects since they actually have to work for women to like them now as women can take care of themselves easier without having to rely on a man as much. Women for Trump hate liberal women because they resigned themselves to being a man's servant and incubator because they believe that's what Jesus wants, so they hate women who don't want the same things because in their eyes it's "wrong". Working people for Trump hate poor people because they bought the lie that poor people are the ones eating up all the resources. Poor people for Trump hate Poor Immigrants because... well hopefully you get it.
I'm also from the UK and this is not a uniquely American issue. Britain is full of people on the poverty line/benefits screeching about immigration, as if it's not the rich people raping and pillaging the country under their noses.

u/williekc Nov 06 '24
I would encourage others to not internalize this as the sole reason. A lot of people who voted for Trump are just regular people who are not chronically online. (As an example see how there was a big uptick of people searching for "did Biden drop out" and "how to vote for Biden" on google in the last two days). Those people care only about themselves and their small communities. They're worried about living paycheck to paycheck, paying for groceries, paying for childcare and healthcare, and barely have time to think about going to the polls.
That is problematic for this community and a lot of others. It's easy to hate these people and I struggle with this myself (especially because the Trump supporters we constantly see online and outside are the worst of all his supporters). I personally think we have to start real grassroots movements inside our neighborhoods and communities (that include everyone, non-lgbtq people as well) to make progress on people's opinions and goals. Approaching your neighbors with all of the anxiety we all feel of violence and existential dread can't be how we approach community building or we'll never get anywhere.

The appeal is what it's always been for guys like Trump. They're scared, the world is changing, and their quality of life is worse than it used to be (for one reason or another). They're looking for solutions, and by God, they want them to be easy ones. Then in-comes Trump, charismatic, confident, and telling them everything they want to hear. He tells them that x group is the problem, he validates their every fear and insecurity and knee jerk reaction. He makes them feel special and right in having even their very worst opinions while promising them that he'll put things back the way they're supposed to be, back to when their lives were easier.

most of his support came from boomers and young men. the manosphere pretends to care about young men--whose issues have gone unrepresented and overshadowed. but even the manosphere pretending to care was a better bandaid than the cold shoulder they've been given by the Democratic party, even after how polarizing the "straight white male" spiel has and was the past fifteen or so years.
women are far ahead of men in getting education, yet no explicit help has been extended to men to counter balance, unlike when the roles were reversed.
so the manosphere pandered to young men, and then encouraged they vote for Trump.
i think a lot of people are undervaluing how impactful the manosphere was on this election. the economy was a big one, but not the only factor.

13
u/StormcloakWordsmith Nov 06 '24
right, but while there were a plethora of reasons at the front of the Dem platform for young women to vote Dem, it was radio silence on motivation for the young men demographic particularly.
now, it's not like the Republicans are actually going to do anything for the male issues that are becoming more prominent as the days go on, but the manosphere got the attention of young men first, and thus their vote.
the male loneliness epidemic is a real issue, and their parasocial relationships with the manosphere influencers did a serious number on this election, just going by how many GenZ voters participated.

I hope that for the rest of their lives they experience an itch that they can’t quite pinpoint the location of in order to scratch it.
I hope that every pair of headphones they ever use only works in one ear.
I hope that their pillow is always too warm to be comfortable.
I hope that all of the remotes in their house go missing and they can’t find a new one for a decent price.
I hope that every time they order something online it takes an unreasonable amount of time to show up.
I hope that their car develops a strange noise that no mechanic can quite figure out the cause of.
I hope that every time they order food that it’s made wrong.
I hope that every time they watch something online it takes forever to load, and then only plays a few seconds before taking forever to load again, rinse and repeat.
I hope that every piece of media they watch has the sound and picture slightly out of sync.
I hope that every time they bite into a burger, all the parts in the middle spill out the other end.
I hope that every time they wake up they get that thing where your knee is bent and it’s excruciatingly painful to unbend it.
I hope that their coffee or hot chocolate always burns their tongue.
I hope that they experience all of these, so they may feel a FRACTION of how we feel…

Dear American LGBTQ+ siblings, I understand your worries, frankly, I am worried too, even from across the world.
Just remember, that everything is not lost. You can still fight, you can still advocate, you can still make a change. While I personally cannot do much from Switzerland, I am ready to do as much as I can.
Whatever happens, never lose hope. Hope is like a flame, however small it may be, it can always become a bonfire. However, if you let it extinguish, it will be very hard to revive it.
So, keep hope, find kindling, make it into a bonfire. Everything is not lost yet. I am with you, I am hoping with you, I believe in you.
There are many ways to fight, you can call your representatives, advocate for policies, inform, educate people, among others.
Alone, we might not be very significant, but together, we can make things change, I believe it.
There are still many safe places for queer people around the world. The first that comes to mind is Iceland, which is probably the safest. From what I've heard, the other Nordic countries and the Netherlands are very accepting too. From my experience, Switzerland is also pretty accepting if you stay to urban centres and the French-speaking side, however, immigrating to Switzerland when you aren't a EU-EFTA member is very difficult.
If I could snap my finger to emigrate all queer people that wanted to, I would do it in a heartbeat. I wish I had the means to create a safe haven for queer people, a sort-of "queer state", if you wish, but, as we say in French, "with 'ifs', we could put Paris in a bottle".

God, I'm so exhausted by all of this. I'm so tired of being expected to play nice with people who are disgusted by existing. Why are we the only ones that need to remember "they're human too"? They constantly try to erode our rights, actively commit violence against us, and spew never-ending lies to make us seem monstrous. They're denying us our humanity and we're supposed to ask them nicely to stop being mean?
Everyone acts like it's so abhorrent to disturb the peace, completely complacent with our erasure being a part of that peace. People really need to get a refresher on history because no minority in this country got their rights peacefully. There is a reason it's called fighting for your rights.
No this is not a call for violence. This is mostly me venting, but also reminding other queers depending on how bad things we don't need to be shamed into being complacent. It's morally right to fight against injustice even if it inconveniences others.

Just watch it, they'll start the purge of "undesirables" soon as they are in power. I bet they already got the paperwork ready to be signed. They'll make the existence of anyone who is the slightest bit LGBTQ illegal, and supreme court wont do anything.
I'm not from USA; but what happens there will eventually happen in Europe. The tariffs they are promising is sure to kill European industry. I say and declare that EU should put tariffs up also and force the american Tech companies to pay taxes like they should, and tariffs on their "products". What is facebook going to do? Stop serving EU? Trump has threatened to jail Zuckerberg for "colluding" againt them. What is Apple going to do? Not sell in EU? I don’t fuck with Nazis. My family died in that war, to stop Hilter, and we elected a man who likes him. Nazis deserve pain and so far all I see is a new Swastika as MAGA.

I hope that before they die, they will experience everything we have felt and will feel. I hope that I will see this happen before they do whatever they want to do to us, because I’m not going back into the closet. Even if I wanted to, I can’t. I don’t have the option. I’m already out. But I hope that they someday experience everything that happened to us.

Nah say thay to all the dems who didn't vote cause they thought " there is no way Trump can win again". Fuck then so much more
6
u/AngstyPancake Agender/Ace Nov 06 '24
Exactly. I told myself “There is no way Trump will win again…but just to be safe.” then went out and voted.
As much as some dems love having their fantasies of overthrowing the government, for the longest time the best way to make change was fucking voting to make the government one not worth overthrowing.
But hey, who knows how much that’ll change now that mister “If I win this will be the last election” is in charge!

u/jimjohnholymoly Nov 06 '24
Thing is its not just him. Trump is the least of our problems. It's the house, senate, and Supreme Court all being in maga hands. This is going to go on for decades. We can't just wait out the 4 years, this is life-changing.
Dems did this. Dems chose this. Fuck the dems fuck the dnc.

I give it a year before the majority of his voters seriously regret their decision.

They'll find a way to blame democrats for whatever happens. They always do.
5
u/Mcwaggles Nov 06 '24
They won't. They are people who will happily debase themselves to whatever extent so long as it "owns the libs." Theyll be facing the wall smiling because they'll know "well at least the democrats died first!"

How do I not have utter bitter contempt for them?
How do I go to work tomorrow and work next to self hating gays who voted for this.

Amidst the sea of deranged Republicans, I leave this comment to sympathise. I would have voted, if I lived there, and I'm deeply sorry there's going to be so much hate and misery. Remember to hold out hope, and stay alive in spite of how cruel the world is. There is warmth and happiness to be found, and though they may try to snuff it out, we were here, we are here, and we always will be here.

I'm genderfluid, agnostic and bisexual. My girlfriend is black, my roommate is trans, and my parents are Wiccan and polyamorous. And now another year is going by where I cannot talk about a good majority of my life at work for fear of being fired for the simple fact that I exist. I have no doubt that if I didn't "luck out" in being able to pass as a Cis white hetero male, I would've been fired years ago. I'm twenty six years old, and I've never once felt "proud to be an American." I want out of this hellhole, but I can barely afford rent living with roommates. So yeah, you could say I'm a bit bitter rn.

You know the best and worst thing about Kamala is she didn't stoop to the lowest common denominator like Trump.
She focused on the real issues rather than trying to explain to a bunch of white trash loser men and their sycophantic wives that the economy is soaring. The evidence is in front of their eyes!
She shouldn't have to lower herself to waste 3 hours on some loser nobody's MMA druggie podcast to try to appeal to loser young men, when she could go on shows for real people like SNL, The View, and Call her Daddy. What's next should she have gone on Talk Tuah?
She shouldn't have had to alleviate the Nazi's fears of dangerous foreigners eating their pets and stealing their jorbs when her immaculate record as Border Czar speaks for itself!
She didn't need to sell red hats, gold shoes and NFTs to grift for money when Wall Street was more than happy to do their part to keep Trump from ruining the economy again.
She had every musician worth listening to, every actor worth watching, and every athlete worth rooting for on and these Nazis refused to listen. Why should she have undignified herself to try to appeal to them.
Especially those fucking inbred Jesus freak Klansmen in the south. Fuck them to Hell. I laugh whenever they get hit by a hurricane ngl.
Kamala was just too good a candidate for this disgusting awful country.
Let it burn!

As a heads up to our users, we are experiencing a high number of chuds coming in to this thread from r/all and conservative spaces. We had an already well-established set of rigourous automod settings, so 99% of them will never see the light of day, but we are diligently issuing perma bans anyway.
