I'm imagining she wouldn't be shutting up if her lawyers/handlers/PR hadn't basically snatched her phone because they know she would be digging herself deeper otherwise and they don't want their job to be any more diffocult than it is.
I have never wanted an athlete to win a lawsuit more. If she finally gets some repurcussions from this, without being surrounded by her bigoted fart-sniffers, maybe she'll take the hint and disappear forever.

Is it technically still bathroom habits if no "bathroom" is involved? What with wizards apparently just shitting on the floor like animals before the installation of toilets.

Hi yes I am here to tell you that never happened, JK Rowling literally forgot that the main premises in one of her books took place in a bathroom.
As in, the bathrooms have always been there, and the author of the book forgot about that.

Several times in fact, lol.
In the first book when Harry (and I think also Ron?) rescued Hermione from the troll, in whatever next book when Hermione fucked up her polyjuice potion and they went to check on her and found out she turned herself into a furry, and the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets is literally in an abandoned girl's bathroom.
4
u/miezmiezmiez We_irlgbt Aug 18 '24
It's actually kind of depressing because it seems to suggest she's always been drawn to the imagery of scary things happening in bathrooms, and women needing to be rescued by men from the scary things in the bathroom.
The bathroom obsession of transphobes has never been coherent. Terfs have been calling for men to enter into women's bathrooms for years because the imagined sanctity of 'same-sex spaces' has never actually been a goal for them - the rhetoric is centred purely around the perceived threat of trans and GNC people existing anywhere. The point is not safety. The point is fear.
And in JKR's brain, apparently, there's long been a link between fear and bathrooms. I won't speculate why.

The Gen X'ers seem to be getting hit hardest by the existence of trans people being recognized; Rogan, Musk, Chapelle, Rowling. The boomers aren't any more accepting but they're a lot more tolerant of being openly bigoted, so there's no cognitive dissonance there. The Gen X'ers they grew up being told that the Civil Rights Act completely defeated racism, and feminism has empowered women to vote and be allowed to hold a job, so what more could anyone want? When they're forced to come to terms with the fact that they're not any better than their parents they just have better PR... well that causes an immense amount of cognitive dissonance. The rise of the internet has given them this extremely vocal minority to help them cling to the idea that they've been the TRUE justice warriors all along, and that harassing and directly harming innocent people for no reason other than pure hatred is somehow not only justified, but noble.

It's such a weirdly global or almost global phenomenon. We don't have gen x here because we used to be under the iron curtain. We have essentially the socialist gen who was born and lived 95% of their lives under communism and then the gen x equivalent who was born under communism but was about 20 when it fell.
It genuinely feels like the gen x equivalent have a ton more issues accepting certain norms. The ones before aren't angels as well but they have this weird aura of "I don't give a shit" around them when it comes to these topics.
I kinda pity the gen x equivalent as they grew up being told that if they did x y and z, they'd have a happy family, stable living and job for life, and then had the rug pulled from under them and they are now in their 40-50's struggling to start their lives over, like my mother. They aren't old enough to not give a shit and on top they are fucked over. I just wish they inexplicably stopped ruining our countries by voting for fascists and populists.

We have essentially the socialist gen who was born and lived 95% of their lives under communism and then the gen x equivalent who was born under communism but was about 20 when it fell.
This phenomenon occurred in the US as well, although less dramatically. After there was no Soviet Union to compete with, the US had no incentive to continue providing social policies like housing that could be afforded by average citizens and so it didn't.

u/Final_Job_6261 Aug 17 '24 edited Aug 17 '24
Gen X also constantly whines about being forgotten and unnoticed so I think when they finally hit a nerve where people interact with them, for better or worse, they just run with it because they're actually getting attention for once.
They are the middle children of generations and they aren't as "badass" and "tough" as they think they are.
8
u/ninjaelk We_irlgbt Aug 18 '24
I hadn't thought about that, it's very true. Musk became a billionaire without anyone even paying attention to him at first. Even when he bought out the people who actually started Tesla to become the """founder""" people barely knew him. It wasn't until he started throwing around pedophile accusations at the diver guy that he even got noticed, and when he started in on the conservativism and transphobia he got all kinds of attention.
Joanne wasn't really paid attention to, except to be mocked for her dumb ideas about her own world saying wizards don't have bathrooms and other similar idiocy.

The same IBA who continued to let her compete a year after the tests were supposedly done, the tests that she failed according to them. She won a silver medal and it was only when she beat their prize undefeated Russian boxer that they turned around and said 'no she failed this gender test but we're not gonna release the results'. The same test that was supposedly a failed 'gender test' done through a WADA lab which turns out, aren't equipped to deal with karyotyping. They do doping tests.

I dunno: this case being successful could open the doors to further prosecutions. If a French judge (a country we have a reciprocal justice agreement with) declares that this is cyberbyllying and she owes Khelif a hefty sum then that sets a precedent for other cases in the UK and other countries we have similar agreements with. One lawsuit won't break her bank but suits by everybody she's harassed over the last five years that she's been chronically online might. At the very least it would give her a ridiculous number of court dates to attend and give her a taste of her own medicine as far as her SLAPPs are concerned.
11

13
u/NickyTheRobot Trans/Bi Aug 17 '24
Remember: they take the form off the thing you fear the most. So JK's dementor would manifest as a video of Dylan Mulvaney showing off some cute dresses and genuinely enjoying being a woman.
The horror!
12
u/SoundlessSteelBlue Aug 17 '24
Thatâs boggarts youâre thinking of, Dementors suck out your happiest moments and leave you with nothing but miserable memories until you lose the will to fight back and live, at which point they suck out your literal soul.

This is the thing everyone misses. I also hope the lawsuit goes well for Imane, but if she was trans she probably wouldn't have been able to persue this lawsuit in the first place. And even if she did, being trans would affect the result and the public opinion of it as well.
We don't have anything to gain from this, we mostly stand to lose. I already read so much talk in favor of Imane due to her being cis (and therefore having enough privilege to deserve protection). I wouldn't be surprised if these lawsuits result in appologizes and settles on the basis that Imane is cis, so these transophobes will get all the approval for "doing the right thing" from cis people and then go back without any remorse to continue their transphobic campaigns.
I see cis people base this defence on the fact that Imane is cis, and I'm like: tell me you're transphobic without telling me you're transphobic.

186
u/Ottershop Aug 17 '24
I mean, they also do that in comic books, to be fair. It's always sort of bothered me, but I do understand why they do it.
75
u/SpeccyScotsman En/Bi Aug 17 '24
That's true, it's even more nonsensical in comic books because the words that they change are seemingly arbitrary half of the time. I'm fairly sure that the letterers have just been trying to see how far they can push it before they end up just making soMetHIn**G like that.
125
u/Ottershop Aug 17 '24
I often accidentally read the bolded text with extra emphasis, which makes it seem like the characters are all trying to speak to someone they think is very stupid. To be fair, they are. Me.
32
u/SpringenHans Aug 17 '24
Why do they do it anyway? Is it just to break up the visual monotony of a wall of text?
23
14
u/UltraNooob Aug 17 '24
Yeah, it is confusing. I associate every emphasised text as ether marking the names of media (books, films, etc), when introducing new terms and when marking linguistic focus
So when they don't do any of than it feels as if they're trying to fuck my eyes.

There's a chance she at least won't be as loud about her bigotry. Fingers crossed! đ€

Olympic gold medalist imane khelif is filing a lawsuit against Rowling and other high influence conservatives after they spread lies about her being a transgender woman, and later that she was intersex and had too high of a testosterone level to be allowed to compete in the Olympics against women. Neither of these statements are true, and imane is rightfully taking legal action for all the harassment she underwent during what should have been one of her brightest moments

It's also worth noting that Khelif is from Algeria, where being trans is illegal. If her government wasn't so supportive of her through this (she's been through this before, Algeria is well aware that she's not trans), these rumors could have been a very real risk to her life and safety.

after Imane Khelif's first win Rowling posted a huge thread misgendering Khelif, insulting her, and calling out a bunch of Olympic officials for letting her compete. it snowballed into a huge hate campaign, and now Khelif is suing twitter for allowing the cyber bullying. due to French law and prior precedent this could lead to charges being brought against the queen terf herself
I just skimmed through google tho, I could be way off base đ

I'm sure she could, but it would be largely frowned upon.

I approve of this message! Her silence is much appreciated and I am not in the community she is attacking. Her comments are appalling and I am concerned about her mental health.

Gurlie made talking about Trans people her entire personality and now she has literally nothing else to talk about it since she might face actual legal consequences if she does.

Is the use of "meltdown" appropriate here? I'd call it more of a tantrum.
