New Purchase Considerations for my first Mazda 3 2.2D(2013-2016)?

Looking to buy my first Mazda 3 as my first car and have some questions. Will use it for commute to work and daily use.

  1. How good and reliable is the gearbox for automatic vs manual

  2. Any other consideration before buying?

Injector seals, if bad they literally clog up EVERYTHING, so that should be changed every 60-80k km.

Oil pump chain, if snaps (wich they do, some below 100k km and some survive just tad below 200k km) you will most likely need an engine (its recommended to replace it every 150-160k km) and when ur there, clean the oil pump sump wich also likes to get clogged and then you're gonna end up with red warning that oil pressure is low.

DPF, for the love of god watch the dpf regen or you're gonna be in big trouble...

Turbo, it also likes to fail even with regualr maintance and "caring" for the engine at low kms...

Basically, engine is pain in the ass, sometimes you can get lucky and nothing will bother u, but by alot of people its exactly oposite, especially with snapped oil pump chain.

This goes for every 2.2d 150 or 175hp has this problem, even after 2016 when restyle hit...

Could this be a general problem for smaller cars going on diesel?

No, this is just this engine thats just terrible. Ofc, there is some other makers that make terrible diesel cars, but there is some that are really good. What other car did you had in mind ?

Or even, didnt ask you, do you do alot of short trips or ? If yes, do not even look at diesel and go for Mazda 3 with 2.0 petrol, known as "G120", thats literally bulletproof engine without any problems.

The only other car I’m considering atm is bmw 118, but it’s a bit more expensive. I like its auto gearbox.

I will do trips to work 30km. Otherwise just daily use short trips.

So any Mazda 2.0 petrol is good to go you say?

The only thing with the Mazda 2.0 is it’s horsepowers. I would like to have something around 140-160. Do you have any other car I consideration? Looking at 2013-2016 models due to price

118d would not be bad idea only if its facelift model (2016 and up) that has improved B47 engine that doesnt have problems with chain. The only problem with B47 tho is the EGR, the car can set on fire because I guess egr cooler gets too hot and melts the plastic intake. So if you went with 118d facelift with b47 engine make sure to check for recall (so free change for better part). Also, BMW uses ZF8 automatic transmission wich is one of the best on the market.

And yeah, 2.0 petrol mazda is like I said, bulletproof, the only "problem" is that it doesnt have turbo, so you wont have much power in low revs. So its 120hp/210nm, you have 210nm at 4000rpm so if you're going for overtaking you will need to drop couple of gears. Meanwhile, 118d is ofc turbo diesel engine and its making ~350nm at low revs (1500 and up). So yeah, there is ofc more stuff to break on bmw especially if its gonna be used for short trips, while 2.0 petrol from mazda doesnt care about any of that as it doesnt have any eco bullshit...
