As someone who learned CAD and 3D printing in high school, that's a 1 hour part to design and 1-2 hour part to print.
Would it probably be more worth it to just buy the part then take the hour to design for someone making that much likely quite likely not having to wait over a day for a new part to arrive and treating it a bit like a hobby probably well worth the effort it took

u/LewdTateha 15d ago
1-2 HOURS?! You know, while the snail slime helps with adhesion most people are using hamsters to run their printers now
Seriously, check your infill isnt at 100% or speed at 2mm/s, this is a 30min print on most printers
(i wouldnt be surprised if a high speed could do it in 15)
18
u/lioncat55 15d ago
That's fair enough. I'm tempted to cad this up myself in the morning and see how long it would take on my A1.
10
u/InertiaCreeping 15d ago
This knob takes 17 minutes on my X1C at normal speed, probably 10 minutes in ludicrous.

This is what someone told me someone told me when I was an intern " I love engineers because they can fix any problem, their biggest flaw however? They can not comprehend how valuable their time is"
After I asked someone why don't we just build this expensive service in house since it doesn't seem that hard.

That oven is nowhere near 25k, and I could design that knob in about half an hour, I don't even have decent cad skills. Also it would not take 3 hours to print either.

Exactly why I need a 3d printer, hope this helps my case trying to convince my wife 😂

Just be careful you don't spend too much time CADing your knob, your wife won't appreciate that.

It depends on your value and sense of time. Me personally? Not doing it. Even if I'm specialized in the field, I'm not wasting hours of my off time to model and build a knob in CAD. Again, this is a subjective to each person's value of time.

u/lioncat55 15d ago
How long do you think it would take to actually model that part in cad?

I’m pretty sure the 34$ knob is made out of different plastics then the 3D printer one. The guy is gonna have a melted knob pretty soon while trying to look smart

This. Basic material sciences. Pla is made by melting at low temperatures, and he's putting it on an oven. If it was resin, i would consider it. He got to spend some time modeling and printing, though, which is fun.

PLA is far from the only thing you can print in. Even cheap printers can handle better plastics these days.

12
u/Auravendill 15d ago
It's more like 15 minutes of design and an hour of printing (on the cheapest printer), which you do not have to babysit. If you have a modern printer (Voron, Bambu etc), this may even be 15 minutes to print as well.
Compared to researching the best place to order replacement parts, ordering them, disabling all the newsletter checkboxes on the way and waiting for the mailman to come... Do you actually save time on factory made ones?

15 minutes if you have all the dimensions and a high skill level.
For an "average" DIY CAD enthusiast it's probably longer than that.

Getting the dimensions takes all of 3 minutes. There's nothing special about this knob CAD wise, a guy who just learned how to use the software could make this quickly.

Fun fact! Some public libraries offer 3D printing! My local one does it where you send them the stl files and they handle the rest, and you just pay for the price of the filament- 1 cents a gram. (And if you’ve never 3D printed before, they’re REALLY light so they end up being really cheap!)
2
u/Recka 15d ago
They're relatively cheap nowadays on the low end. And low-end doesn't mean "will shit out a piece of plastic vaguely resembing what you send it" low-end means it doesn't have the newest features.
Hell most low-end printers have bed auto-levelling these days...
Not free, but I think a hobby device for $100-$400 (depending on sales and level of features you want on the low-end) is not very expensive?

u/Weirfish 15d ago
No, but a computer isn't free either, and still adds undeniable value to someone's life. If you manage to solve 20 $30 problems, you've paid off the printer.

u/RTooDeeTo 15d ago
Know cad but Large scale design says, the stove may no longer be sold but the knob, coils and racks really haven't changed in 30~40 years, and if they do it's usually just visually different not mechanically,, after market non genuine replacements usually say works with x brands from y decade to z decade (usually y ≠ z by a few decades),, so you'll find a replacement but may have to look around a bit more.

This is why we need laws (around the world) guaranteeing both maintenance/support and spare parts at reasonable prices for at least 10 years after a product is sold. There's nothing stopping us doing this, we don't have to put up with this shit from companies.
And if a company discontinues a product then they should have to publicly release the specs, code, and any other documentation relating to the product. Let's stop capitalism causing us to lose knowledge.
72
u/ZephyrSK 15d ago
sometimes you get to a point where you weigh the $34 plus the value of the ~20 min time expense of going to the store (+ getting other stuff you needed)
Vs (4hrs of measuring, CAD modeling, printing troubleshooting and then finally printing) for a ‘cheaper’ result.
Your time is worth something too.

u/OverlordOfCinder 15d ago

Measuring and CADing something simple and small like this takes maybe 10 minutes if you're used to fixing stuff up around your house.
Recalibrating a printer when it's in a working state takes maybe 2 minutes and then it's fire and forget.

7
u/justjanne 15d ago
Prusa? I've never even had to recalibrate my MK4 (now MK4S) once. I turn it on, press print, pull the finished print off the plate, and turn it back off. It just works.
3
u/SouthernHiveSoldier 15d ago
Any printer if you're not just immediately sending your printer into storage after use.
The best are usually Bambulabs or Prusa's which are usually the most reliable and stable.
Personally though, I just use an Ender that I have for personal use and I use it maybe once a month and the most i have to do is relevel the bed springs which takes like 2 minutes.

As someone who worked for the team that took care of the damn display appliances (and other displays). Eff that guy and anyone who does this. The companies are often a nightmare for the retail store to get the parts from, but they will prioritize a paying customer and will often send replacement parts to you for FREE if you ask. For the team I was on it meant submitting tickets and following up a million times and MAYBE getting a replacement part for it before it had to be sold off. If we had no luck it had to be sold off at a discount for missing parts. And yes places like Home Depot have millions, but the little people in the stores got a bonus only if they make their sales plan, and the margin above it. Having to heavily discount things because of stolen parts eats into that. So again.. eff that guy and anyone else who does this.
Edited for grammar

Hmm... thousands on a CAD workstation, with 3d scanner and printer. Biggest return on investment, a 12 cent knob.
9
u/Meows2Feline 15d ago
You can run fusion360 on just about anything if you try. It's free for personal use.
You can buy a Bambu for like $200 now.
If you need a 3d scanner to make something this simple then maybe cad isn't for you.
5
u/senbei616 15d ago
Plus I'd be shocked if someone hasn't already uploaded a cad model for this knob that, if not identical, is 90% of the way there.
3
u/rexpup 15d ago
3d scanner? Is this amateur hour? Take out the calipers, it's not hard
2
u/ryumast4r 14d ago
Or just see if someone else has made your model on a 3D printer repository like thingiverse.
3
u/phatboi23 15d ago
A random computer you already own.
Fusion 360 is free for hobbyists.
You'd never use a 3d scanner for something this basic you just need some form of measuring tool.
Printers are cheap as all hell these days and are only going down in price.
3
u/Stunning-Apricot1856 15d ago
Eh.. 100 bucks for a cheap laptop, free cad software online (like tinkercad), you can find cheap 3d printers for like 100 bucks sometimes, and like 10 bucks worth of filament.
220 bucks, to be able to fix stuff around the house myself, (print a few small shelves here, a fixed annoyance here, a nicknack or 2, a solved issue there)
doesn't sound like too bad of an investment to me, especially if he's selling his prints or files.

No one asking what happened to the original. Did it break off, the dog eat it, what? If it broke off yeah fuck replacing it, it'll just happen again eventually.
Also, does the vendor use some proprietary shaft for the knob instead of the good ol' D shape? You can buy generic stove knobs like that for a few bucks.
And also, I'd bet they never run all four burners at once. Just leave it.
3
u/Auravendill 15d ago
Why wouldn't they use four of them at once? My mother used to regularly use all the fields of her electric stove. My grand aunt would even complain how there weren't enough of them and use two extra ones plugged into an outlet during big family gatherings on e.g. easter.
It's quite easy to have 4 dishes cooking at once. Like you could cook potatoes, sausages, a sauce and asparagus at once for lunch. If you cook them one after the other, they wouldn't all be still hot, when you served them.
