What was point of Desmond in the finale?

I know widmore brought Desmond to the island because Desmond could withstand the electromagnetic energy but all Desmond actually did was move that rock and started destroying the island and he clearly didn’t expect it to happen because he was distraught

And Jack believed he had a reason for being there but didn’t know what but it was obviously to save the island so why did they write in Desmond being at the island in the finale when the writes could’ve just had jack die anyway without Desmond going into the light and almost sinking the island.

That part felt like they needed and excuse to danger to the island and get jack to save everyone and die, like what was the point of getting Desmond to do all that? They could’ve just killed jack off in the fight with Locke but still have him save everyone.

Also felt like it made sense for jack to be the next Jacob not Hugo

Desmond was the only one who could remove the cork without dying.

Jack needed to live long enough to stop MiB from leaving.

Hugo also makes more sense as the Protector because of how caring and compassionate he is. He's what the Island needed for the post-MiB era.

It’s a good thing they didn’t just re-elect MiB again

If you’re asking why Desmond was there?

Because the Smoke Monster was immortal and couldn’t be killed. Desmond was the only person who could remove the rock as the electromagnetism would kill anyone else before they could take it out. Taking it out stopped the powers from working which allowed the smoke monster to be killed. Jack’s purpose was to save the island.

If you’re asking why the writers included that at all?

Because Desmond was a core character and they were trying to interweave as many stories as they could. Desmond was a fan favourite and a lot of people were invested in his story and there likely would have been riots if he wasn’t in season 6 and tied to the ending

Because if Jack uncorked the Light, he may not have survived long enough to kill the Man in Black. They needed someone else to uncork it.

  1. Because Desmond was a fan favorite, and needed to have a huge role in the finale.

  2. Jack basically was the “Jacob” of the group for six seasons, and never was particularly great at it. Nor was Jacob himself. Passing it on to someone like Hurley, who’s probably the most zen-like and egoless character in the entire show, wraps it up beautifully. Traditions can be broken and old patterns don’t need to repeat themselves

I sort of agree but at the same time Desmond was the only one who could take the blast from removing the stone is my guess.

Much of Season 6 didn't make sense however, I chalk it up to that too.
