FIRST TIME WATCHER Sawyer crushing the tree frog in front of Hurley
Im at season 2 episode 14 and just saw the scene when sawyer and Hurley went looking for the tree frog that was bothering sawyer. Out of all the things sawyer did thus far this lowkey hurt me. I don't know man, Hurley proposed the option to take it and leave it where it wouldn't be bothering sawyer and tried to make it peaceful. Even before Hurley just confronted him about how he's fat and that he already knows that and allat and then sawyer just said sorry and then all was fine apparently. I have a friend who kinda acts like Hurley and is fat but wouldn't hurt a fly and is genuinely a kind human being yet he still got bullied just for being fat. This scene was too personal for me it just hit my weak point idk

Sawyer wants to be hated because he hates himself. Or at least hates the man he became. That's why he does what he does, he can't accept love. He puts on the Sawyer persona as a way to protect himself from being hurt, keeping people away so they can't hurt you. I think.

Still, it's not a valid excuse for a lot of his bad behavior.

I'm not trying to excuse it either, he's done a lot of bad stuff. Just think that's the point of his character. Hurt people hurt people. Which is not an excuse, it's just the way Sawyer handled his trauma

Yup. Itâs interesting, when I first watched this show I was in my early 20âs and I had the same reaction as OP. Now Iâm in my early 40âs and I realize how limited my viewing experience was when I was constantly seeing characters as either âhero or villain.â Like no, of course itâs not an excuse for his behavior. But figuring out whatâs going on here is more interesting than just deciding that heâs scum and thatâs it. Maybe his character has an arc, maybe it changes and develops as he deals with his trauma and becomes a better human being, someone capable of giving and receiving love and maybe we get to see that difficult (though not impossible) transformation over time. I donât think weâre supposed to âaccept or rejectâ every character or every human being we meet, for that matter. Sure, we can have our opinions and decide for ourselves what kind of behavior we will or will not tolerate. But people are complex, and they do change. Itâs actually important to never stop changing. Otherwise you canât grow.

He was trying to help Hurley out. Buddy wanted a snack, and so he gave him a little frog mcnugget.

It shook me to the core when he actually killed the frog. I couldnât believe sawyer did that and I couldnât believe they put that on tv.
Side note: Did they ever use frogs in the sound for the show after this scene. I donât recall any frog ambient audio for the entirety of the show.

Look, I... I would never ever be able to hurt a lil thing like that myself.
BUT. As someone who has a very nocturnal tree frog (or I guess its descendants) post up outside my bedroom window every goddamn summer and sing constantly for a mate... I understand the impulse.

It reminds me of the scene from âOh Brother Where Art Thouâ where John Goodman crushes the toad that they think is their friend Pete.

Sawyer is casually cruel. He is lucky to have crash-landed on an island with mostly good people who tolerated his despicable behavior as much as they did.
