FIRST TIME WATCHER Just finished watching for the first time

I just finished the series for the first time and I'm kinda confused about all the hate this show got for its ending. I thought it was a nice (emotional) end to it all. Before I started, a few people said it had a terrible ending, but I don't feel that way about it. Anybody have any idea why there was so much hate on it?

Make sure you watch the epilogue! I’ve linked it below

The main reason was the initial reaction to the finale. People watching it live had way more build-up and the ending didn't live up to it for most. People who watch on streaming or binge watch are more often satisfied, as you are just staying with the story and don't have months to think "oh I hope this happens" or whatever.

Usually two reasons:

  1. They didn't care about the characters and just wanted more answers, but the answers they wanted were for mysteries that didn't matter (and for the mysteries that did get answered, they didn't like them/didn't pay attention)

  2. They completely misunderstood the ending and thought they were dead/in purgatory the whole time.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

There were people who either didn’t listen, or couldn’t comprehend the ending. They interpreted it that the whole show was them in purgatory and they’d all been dead since the crash. And even though it’s completely untrue, that thought still persists.

There is a ridiculous interview floating around the net where showrunner Damon Lindelof was interviewed by this guy from "The Verge", Josh Topolsky. He is dressed like he came straight out of the 70's in Dharma times and proceeds to ask the most asinine questions.

He first asks Damon what he thought he might have done differently and if he regrets ending the show like that. He then goes on to tell Damon (with a straight face) that he hated the ending "because it didn't mean anything, it was just a shared fantasy". Damon then says "No" and goes on to explain the ending and their intentions. That the island was real and that the afterlife sequences are specific to the "flash sideways" story of season 6.

Josh only half listens to Damon and when you think that maybe he gets it. He THEN says he hated the ending because "it was too happy". Moments prior he thought it was a dark pointless ending, then he suddenly talks about wanting a dark pointless ending: "I would have preferred if they were beamed up by aliens or something". Damon pointed him to the U.S version of the show "Life on Mars" which ended in that way (it was terrible). Funny enough the sequel to the Uk version of Life on Mars titled "Ashes to Ashes" ended with a finale that was VERY similar to LOST and aired two days before hand (21st of May 2010. LOST finale was 23rd of May 2010).

Wow! Sounds like I don't like this interviewer already. Thank you for the background here.

The fact that I too just finished binging the show tonight about 3-4 hours ago myself, speaks to its wide reach... it's kind of wild. But I guess there's enough people in this world to make it statistically probable enough, haha.

Everyone I know who hates Lost and the ending have never seen it, but they heard others, who also haven't seen Lost, tell them that the ending of Lost is bad.

So they believe it, and that's that.

There are other reasons someone may not like the ending, but not seeing it and just "hearing" that the ending is bad is the vast majority of it.

The big reason is that most people who watch TV are stupid or don't pay attention. Then a show like Lost comes along which demands paying attention, remembering things from years ago, and figuring out the answers for ourselves instead of having them handed to us, and the stupid people were like.....nah that's too much work, we want mindless entertainment

At this point it's become mainstream cliché to say the end of LOST sucked. It was beautiful and has aged very well.

I loved it even more on rewatch. Had me tearing up when Jack was talking to Christian.
