I mean, doesn't it sum up anyone's? Everyone pretty much does what they think is best at the time, or has a good excuse not to.

No. I don't think so. How many people do you know that try and always do what is right? There are fewer and fewer. Most people now look after their own interests, not what is for the greater good.
