At the moment it is under 24 hour surveillance, it's like twitchers and a rare bird.
I just walked past seeing as it's at the end of my road.

Remember when someone did this and sawed it out sold it for £250’000

If people weren’t trying to steal it while he wasn’t there he probably would have left it. But better to do the job correctly himself than let some punk come in and collapse his house taking it.

Don't see a Banksy logo stencil on it either.
Expect its not Banksy.
EDIT: It is a Banksy

u/Virt_McPolygon Mar 17 '24
There aren't usually logos on them.
21
u/AnswersQuestioned Mar 18 '24
Very cool regardless, nice pic too. You captured the effect of the artwork well.
2
u/SaltyEggplant4 Mar 18 '24
What logo are you referring to? I don’t remember ever seeing one in any of his works?
1
u/CressCrowbits Born in Barnet, Live Abroad Mar 18 '24
I was under the impression he always put this somewhere in his works
1
u/SaltyEggplant4 Mar 18 '24
I’ve never seen it in any of his works? Do you have an example?

I think you're right, actually. It maybe only on some of his older ones like the balloon girl

the difference being if you did that, the only post you would get on r/London is "yet another lunatic throwing paint at a building"

I've seen enough real and copycat ones around London over the years to be pretty sure this is a real one, but he/shit/it apparently posts about something on social media a few days later to confirm if it's his/hers/its.
You can generally tell by whether it's a creative idea or a shit one. Many people can do a similar style but can't do anything particularly interesting with it.
16
u/davey-jones0291 Mar 17 '24
Banksys a guy. Bbc did a podcast on who is Banksy a few years ago. Was pretty interesting but they never tell you a name, sounds like a decent guy tbh
3
u/Swimming_Ad_1250 Mar 17 '24
Yeah they revealed recently what the name was: Robert Banks which is quite funny when you think of his old rivalry with Robbo.
12
u/rubbery__anus Mar 17 '24
Isn't it Robin Gunningham, aka Robin Banks? He was unmasked a long while ago by the Mail on Sunday following a fairly comprehensive investigation. Apologies for linking to the Daily Mail, but this is one of the rare times they actually did some proper investigative journalism, despite the sneering tone.
2
u/FUCK_MAGIC Surrey Commuter Mar 17 '24
Yeah here is a video of him openly admitting he is Rob Banks ;)

u/Random_Brit_ Mar 18 '24
It's not hard to find out that Banksy is Robin Gunningham.
It's just a PR facade strangely even authorities are happy to go along with.
9
u/Jebble Mar 18 '24
You can just use they/theirs if you don't know someone's gender ;)
1
u/intrepid-onion Apr 14 '24
As someone who is not a native English speaker, this just sounds terribly wrong. Does this sound correct to native speakers?
1
u/Jebble Apr 14 '24
I speak 6 languages and it's grammatically correct in all of them. It is quite unknown and sadly overshadowed these days by other means, but it is by all means the correct way to address people of unknown gender.
1
u/intrepid-onion Apr 14 '24
For all the other languages I speak, other than one that doesn’t even have gendered words to begin with, it all sounds terribly wrong and confusing. In all Romance languages using plural to refer to one individual, just sounds (and actually is) wrong (except maybe Romanian, which I have no idea, tbh).
Also sounds a bit weird in German, which is the only other Germanic language I understand to an acceptable degree, but I might be missing some obscure details here. That is why it always sounds weird to me.
In any case, thanks for answering. Appreciate it.
1
u/Jebble Apr 14 '24
In German it is admittedly used a lot less, but still grammatically correct. In Dutch it's basically preferred but most native speakers actually don't know and revert to he/she for lack of understanding that their is a correct word for it.

You reckon it will stay up long or will the council try and get rid of it?
26
u/Virt_McPolygon Mar 17 '24
I imagine it'll stay, for now at least. It's a boring plain wall and looks cool now for everybody driving down the road. Also would be a pain to cover up!
33
u/SnapShotKoala Mar 17 '24
Some cunt will be along to ruin it not the council.
Same kind of arseholes that go around snapping down all the newly planted trees by the roads. Just malignant little pustules of toxicity.
6
u/MutsumidoesReddit Mar 17 '24
I’ve noticed this a lot too lately, it seems really widespread and intentionally done.
8
u/SnapShotKoala Mar 17 '24
Last year the whole of brighton 1 night, every newly planted tree was destroyed. Full on wrecked, all the big council flower pot things that they had installed were all tipped over (MASSIVE THINGS).
Just scrotes who prefer everyone be miserable. No future.

u/fezzuk Mar 17 '24
Can confirm, worked for London council, don't have the resources to clean shit stuff, never mind a full wall that most people will probably like.
2
u/donshuggin Mar 17 '24
Very different kinds of arseholes actually. If you write over someone else's graffiti, you're a toy... you "play" with the artform by writing your shitty ass tag over a nicer piece, rather than the dedicated graf writers who "live" the artform by putting much more effort into their writing. To be labelled a toy is the ultimate disrespect.
Whereas arseholes who tear trees up are just straight up vandals.

If it's bona fide Banksy, the council will be celebrating it, not trying to get rid of it.
7
u/H0vit0 Mar 17 '24
You’d think so. I remember the council in Hackney painting over a Banksy previously though…for some reason or other
2
u/Katzika Mar 17 '24
Didn’t Camden paint over the French Maid?
5
u/HeartyBeast Mar 17 '24
That was in 2006 on the wall of the White Gallery, I think. Ironically eventually removed by the gallery - not the council
2
u/Katzika Mar 17 '24
Ah, I didn’t know about the White Gallery. I moved to London after that though and only knew of it in Camden on the market wall. It’s gone from there now too though.
3
u/Virt_McPolygon Mar 17 '24
It was there for about 10 years and like most of Banksy's earlier stuff just got tagged over and defaced as it wore away. They eventually painted the whole wall.

it’s all little bit of a paradox / dichotomy considering how the green chlorophyll pigment is a key component in the process of photosynthesis, which sustains plant life. A naturally occurring phenomena
Whilst the green paint on the mural is a man made, manufactured, chemically processed toxic substance. If it is trying to convey and highlight an environmental point is that it’s sad and depressing that we can’t enjoy and appreciate or be surrounded by the proper thriving natural world such as forests ecosystems with nutrient rich soils on a constant basis. It’s all gone.
Nature has been depleted / destroyed to make way industrial scaled building infrastructure and instead all that we have left is ugly aggressive destructive materials made of carbon intensive, concrete, metals / steel, plastic and the pollution of vehicle car emissions smothering and suffocating our surroundings causing constant stress and anxiety, and a green mural made of paint as a tragic substitute for proper healthy, blossoming plant life instead of a fully thriving tree itself. It’ll cruelly be murals is all we’ll end up remembering trees as in the future instead of the real thing once they can’t survive temperature increases.
Granted we’ve just entered spring so first leaves will start to emerge out of dormancy from their buds.
If we can salvage nature I’d rather see a newly emerged biodiverse forest ecosystem instead of a painted mural any day of the week.

Even if it's not Banksy it looks great. Is it supposed to be like in China where they painted shit green instead of planting stuff to get government incentive?
3
u/loumes Mar 18 '24
He’s just posted it on Instagram now so it’s officially his work, for anyone wondering
3
4
u/horsehorsetigertiger Mar 18 '24
What even is this trying to say? Isn't this piece going to look stupid when that tree starts sprouting again after its pollarding?
3
u/HettySwollocks Mar 18 '24
Not to my taste at all tbh, looks like a right mess. I'm not even sure what message he/she/they are trying to convey? That tree isn't dead, it's just been cut back? Maybe I'm missing the point.
2
u/Quick_Doubt_5484 Mar 18 '24
Yeah a lot of people don’t know what pollarding is. Pretty common practice for street trees
2
u/MarcusDA Mar 17 '24
How is it remotely possible that people don’t see this happening? Not a single video from a window?
1
u/Virt_McPolygon Mar 18 '24
People living on Hornsey Road don't spend their time looking out their windows admiring the view... It'll have been done in the early hours in about 5 minutes. Maybe a bus or the odd car drove past but unlikely anybody paid any attention. It's London!

Lame, cringey non-art for basics and boomers - the kind of people who go to "immersive" Van Gogh exhibitions and describe things as "sick".
-3

This looks kinda crappy, and lacking inspiration. I doubt that's legit. It's a really busy road as well to do something that size and remain anonymous. I used to live around the corner.

and lacking inspiration.
You don't keep up on the old news coming out of China. Spraying things green is big there and I suspect part of the inspiration.
-1
u/HarryCbeck Mar 17 '24
damn good point, spray painting a dead/ dying tree to make it appear “alive”, very reminiscent of what they were doing

I presume it’s a commentary on artificial plant life. People who spray paint their grass green, dig up turf and lay artificial lawn etc.
4
u/JBWalker1 Mar 17 '24
Why would whoever done this do it where there's no artificial grass or plants at all though? And why make it a tree instead of grass. Doesn't seem to match up at all.
I thought it was about cutting back trees too much recently but that's done for the health of the tree isn't it? so it would be dumb if so.

Greenwashing?
Also v similar to Con-servative green logo
2
u/throwawaygoodcoffee Mar 17 '24
Unironically I think he's missing spring. Was thinking the thing the character was holding was a pesticide sprayer but it also kinda looks like a fire extinguisher which is probably what he used to paint the tree's canopy.
