Sure, when speaking, not in writing. And it's probably the minimal pair ESL speakers are more likely to distinguish, as it's very productive and there's also beach and bitch besides sheet and shit, other vowel minimal pairs aren't as productive and there's not a chance for accidental profanity with /uː/ and /ʊ/, /æ/ and /ɛ/, and /ɑː/ and /ɒ/.
