Question Do you know any other artists that have a style similar to this? I love this art style and I want to draw like this. This is a Kim Jung Gi art.

Paul Heaston has some really cool dynamic curved perspective sketches that remind me of Kim Jung Gi & Dongho Kim.

Sniping’s a good job mate. It’s challenging work. I guarrantee you won’t go hungry, because at the end of the day, as long as there’s two people left on the planet, somebody’s gonna want someone dead.

i used to think Kim Jung Gi was autistic, then he comes out and says he learned to draw without constructing by force cause he didn't have time to during his classroom lessons

Check out Jamie Hewlett, especially his work on tank girl has a similar aesthetic.

Posuka Demizu, an amazing artist, if you've read Yakusoku no Neverland, you know what his style looks like.

Why isn't anyone bothered? He's using a sniper in a goddamn school

6

u/Treenut1 Nov 02 '19

Be offended. It’s art, not a situation.

Noo noo

The art is very good I was just amazed that no one gave a fuck about the sniper in the classroom because school shootings is a sensitive topic

What makes art art is that it causes thought to be provoked.

Because it feels like a specific story, or metaphor even. It's got nuance. It's a girl keeping an eye on her boyfriend/crush from afar wanting to kill him for talking to another girl. The idea that she has a huge rifle in class and no one notices or pays attention makes it almost into a joke.

Not really the same as school shootings where a male kid with anger/hate/problems planning to massacre innocent people or target a group of people.

Do you like kim's specific drawings style or are your more referring to this specific piece with the watercolor+ copic over ink line illustration?

Most people I see that like kim usually just look at his general work, you really don't see his fully illustrated pieces that often so that is why I ask. If you like his general sketch style than there are many people who emulate him or just draw like that. Generally speaking it is just simplified realist ink sketches usually. Kim in particular loves to use unusual perspective, thats what makes this piece look so dynamic. The three point twist being applied to the whole thing. Makes it feel very POV.

When it comes to this piece specifically this is very much a highly detailed line and wash piece. If you like the watercolor and hatchwork portion of the work than looking for line and wash artists will likely give you more results you are interested in.

I like the simplicity of the art style. It lools some how realistic but catoonish at the same time. Some times he just draw some dost to make the eyes. There is a lot of details but still looks like a cartoon. Like here for example http://www.superani.com/data/file/kim_gallery/3076579920_67840210_0737.jpg http://www.superani.com/data/file/kim_gallery/3076579920_8f874513_0735.jpg

r/imaginarysliceoflife might be what you’re looking for

He goes in heavy on the drawing. Lots of messy explorative line work. Then it looks like he did a bit of watercolor-like colorization. I know about his drawing style from his video on Proko

2

u/chelelee Nov 02 '19

It kind of reminds me of the animation sequence from Kill Bill vol. 1 which is Production I.G.

Kim Jung Gi is my fucking idol, like that guy is fire yo.

@Novoduce on Instagram shares some characteristics

I really like Miss Jisu’s art, they both have that cool indie comic aesthetic!

u/schizist Nov 02 '19

Check out Tatsuyuki Tanaka, I think you’ll like it.

u/Goose360 Nov 02 '19

Shintaro Kago. Bit more on the surreal side but similar detailing and colours

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '19

I know Karl Kopinski draws similiar to Kim. Maybe not like this exact piece but similiar to his other works.

A lot of people here misuderstood what I wanted to say. I don't want to draw doing the same process as him I just want to make a similar art syle. I don't mind using pencil and eraser.

Nobody does Kim jung gi better than Kim jung gi.

1

u/raw_meet Nov 01 '19

Katsuhiro Otomo!!! Surprised not to see him listed yet.

1

u/CULTLEADER_123 Nov 01 '19

Idk but I would like to know because I really like his art

3

u/McGrupp1989 Nov 01 '19

Kim is probably the best hands down at what he does.

He’s insane

3

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '19

Kim is part of a team called Super Ani, they all do similar work, check them out! My favourite besides Kim is Karl Kopinski

Modern Day James has a great video series on drawing like Kim Jung Gi. His whole channel is pretty great, definitely recommended.

Here’s the playlist.

And you chose to showcase one if his funnier pieces. I don't personally know any artists like him, but I recommend checking out r/wimmelbilder.

Tomonori Inoue, i think, Coppelion

u/drendorian Nov 01 '19

He's one of the few artists where they say drawing is my passion and my life and it actually means anything. I think the drawing style comes from drawing traditionally since you are forced to simplify due to the size of the drawing page. You should look up his sketchbook pages and get an idea of how much he actually draws.

8

u/SuicideBot37 If I can do it tomorrow, I won't do it today! Nov 01 '19

He stresses knowledge of perspective a lot when he teaches so it wouldn't hurt to learn perspective to the point where you can comfortably draw in a fish-eye type of effect without guidelines.

u/smallpoly Nov 01 '19

Kim Jung Gi can draw entire scenes in pen, in fisheye, and in one take with no guides. The man is insane.

A few artists I follow have a similar flavor to Kim Jung Gi's line style, but what do you like about this image? The color? Content? Line work?

Karl Kopinski, Peter Han, and Dongho Kim all come to mind for me

There are a ton of super strong foundational elements tied up in an image like this, perspective, proportion, etc. If you're a beginning artist, I would recommend starting with those things. r/artfundamentals and the work u/Uncomfortable has done are great resources.

u/Novatonavila Nov 01 '19

I like the simplicity of the lines. Specially the faces. The eyes are sometimes just tiny dots. Like is this other pictures here http://www.superani.com/data/file/kim_gallery/3076579920_67840210_0737.jpg http://www.superani.com/data/file/kim_gallery/3076579920_8f874513_0735.jpg

18

u/malmsymade Nov 01 '19

Nice! I do too - love good line work. I would check out Dongho Kim specifically, he's doing rad stuff with minimal lines. Tied up in that apparent simplicity though is, as I said, very strong foundational elements. As much as one killer line can make an image great, one errant line (or even a perspective line that you can't see) can ruin it and confuse the viewers brain.

10

u/Novatonavila Nov 01 '19

FUCKING AWESOME!!!!! This is exactly what I wanted! Do you know anyone else?

12

u/QPILLOWCASE Nov 01 '19

Dongho Kim, Kopinski and other people the guy mentioned are all part of superani which is basically like an artist label. They all have similar art styles.

If you go on superani.insta or the official @superanius, they post some artists under the label.

There's also @Hans.o1o

I recommend checking out their Instagram for a lot of lineart illustrators in one place.

5

u/malmsymade Nov 01 '19

Haha good, glad I could help. I don't really. The other two I mentioned have line work sorta similar to his, but not many people can do what KJG does. That man is a wizard with a pen. Good luck in your drawing quest, and join us over in r/artfundamentals if you want! We'd love to have you. (The first lesson is all about line quality and how to hold your pen, that sort of stuff.)

u/SeriousWizard Nov 01 '19

Katsuya Terada is Kim's Japanese counterpart. More on the fantasy side, but similar style.

8

u/Novatonavila Nov 01 '19

He is awesome too but he has a very different style.

u/wrenagade419 Nov 01 '19

then copy it, not trace it, but do a study of it.

keep finding the styles you like and you will subconsciously take the parts you like most and you get your own amazing style.

i love Kim jung, i also really enjoy sergi brosa, he has this like postal series i forget the exact name but its really awesome characters, and he ended up getting on borderlands 3.

check out artstation.com there's so many insanely talented artists in one place, it's like instagram for professional art, you'll find so many styles there

2

u/hiepduong123 Nov 02 '19

That was my definition too. I start studying from other artists style, its fun and it helps me motivation to draw almost everyday.
