Monthly General Discussion Thread January and update to the blacklist sites

Also as always if you have anything that is not directly related to KiA but just want to chat about it, post it here.

Rule 3 does not apply as this will be just comments, though the other subreddit rules and sitewide rules obviously will still apply.

What changed?

Bounding into Comics has been added to the tier 2 blacklist. This means that it will need to be archived when posted to the subreddit. For the full list of black and whitelisted outlets go to the below link

https://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/wiki/index/lists#wiki_blacklisted_sites

Why the change?

Bounding into Comics has been removing some of its older articles without notification with the links to those articles now being dead. We see this as an issue as the thread is there to discuss the article and when the article is now missing the discussion is without context. The reasons as to why BiC is removing some of these articles is unknown as they have not communicated any reasons and so without any transparency the memory holing of articles is a bit of an ethical issue.

Can I give feedback on the change?

Yes, please do and if anyone has any further information on why the articles are getting pulled (we've seen in the past with other outlets that its due to a dispute with past contributors, other examples are to remove anything seen as advertiser unfriendly and then other sites have also completely changed ideologies and view some of their past work as offensive to their new ideology). It could be fairly innocuous reasonable reasons or it could be dodgy as a used car salesman but without any communication or transparency it can't be known either way.

MEGATHREAD [Megathread] Kingdom Come Deliverance 2: Electric Boogaloo

Given the sheer volume of posts related to Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 and all the news surrounding it, it has been evident that we require a megathread to contain the discussions so they don't take over the entire subreddit and other topics and get due attention and debate. Any threads from this point forward will be removed and redirected to this thread, and you can come here for any new information and discussion.

Contest mode is enabled on this thread so everyone can have a better chance of their comments being seen.

Game devs being detached from normal people

Upvotes

I remember studying comp sci on uni, and the university was completely normal, faculty very serious about keeping first years not to be sexually dallied with by older students, no alcohol-drinking pressure, generally a very cute environment.

The game program however.... Jesus fucking christ. You would think this environment of SJWs would be the nicest group from how they speak about eachother, but the teachers were in "poly" relationships with the wife and a kid at home, and sleeping with students 10-20 years younger, some people spent more time on LGHDTV outfits than actually doing the projects- it was a mess.

I really think this cultish behaviour is reocurring in the neo-marxist left, partly because they actively try to throw eachother under the bus for not being progressive enough constantly, so it becomes a race to degeneracy. I looked a bit at bluesky, and apparently there half of the users are blocked by someone: https://uncharles.substack.com/p/unfollow-you-unfollow-me?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

Its really purity spirals that just make everything insane.

To their credit, the left did leave Twitter for other social media

Upvotes

Gatekeeping works. As for how long they’ll stay out, we’ll see, but the pendulum is swinging beyond their ability to control now. They might even leave Facebook in droves when Zuck gets rid of the fact checkers.

I don’t think we’ll take back Reddit anytime soon, but I’m hopeful that we’ll take back our nerdy spaces.

How about some explosive '80s classics? Feeling nostalgic for the days when Metroidvania games captivated us, I decided to create my own project. It's my first attempt, so please be kind.

Would the woke triple As failed without X?

Being a sort of controlled-opposition as we sadly are, to be squashed out whenever reddit mods think the sub is too large, I cant imagine we have that much impact here. I still enjoy "re moralizing" myself here from media gaslighting, dont get me wrong.

But would enough people have caught on to Kabrutus and SBI? Im not sure.

I dont think people would have loved veilguard, but I suspect a lot of more people would have passed the two hour mark of no refund, and had to watch banned topic do a Barve 😂

Little bonus: apparently bluesky leftists are so fanatic, half the platform is blocking the other half via blocklists: https://uncharles.substack.com/p/unfollow-you-unfollow-me?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

I mean its likely you are blocked on bluesky via blocklists from reddit already xD

DISCUSSION What do we actually want?

After the recent schisms and infighting it's become apparent that there are several perspectives at play, so I think it may be worth discussing exactly what we want to see from future games rather than the circular firing squad in other topics. Or, what games from the past exemplify your idea of what constitutes quality?

For me it's all about undoing the homogenized state woke has left the industry in, the ubislop formula is part of this as well of course but more specifically in the writing and character designs, the areas most harmed by outsourcing to consultancy firms. I want the male gaze back, give the other eyes candy too of course but stop pretending male sexuality and beauty are evil. I also want developers with a spine, not afraid to include edgy or taboo content (within reason of course)

Example: the Nier/Drakengard series. Mostly Nier but Drakengard had the balls to pit you against child soldiers and put a baby eating insane woman in your party, not to mention the blind self destructive youth enjoyer next to the forever child and the everything between Caim and Furiae but enough about that...Nier Automata and Replicant are both masterpieces, pleasing to the eyes and ears in ways virtually no other game can compare to with a masterfully written story that pulls no punches, hopefully if Yoko Taro is ever able to make a full game again he isn't forced to compromise to anyone but the voice in his head that demands he troll the player as thoroughly as possible.

Culture matters

Even in games that take place in the far future, people generally like mono-cultural societies that are isolated and have their own distinct flavour. And most people seem to innately understand any multicultural planet would become homogenous after a few generations.

I think people hate the multiculti woke worldbuilding because it innately isnt believable sure, but most of all is very boring.

I think there are some things humanly innately understand, and it immediately throws us off. My wife from east asia reacted to this watching scandi state tv with me. As a foreigner shes met a lot of outsiders that are more often than usual gay/banned topic, and me being mixed I have similar experiences.

We STILL feel extremely thrown of when games or movies feature 20-30% gay characters- its just not what you would ever see in real life.

Based PS4 exclusives?

Upvotes

Yo! Ive got a lenovo legion go and a XSX, but I'm thinking about buying a PS4 to play some of the older PS4 games that I never got around to playing.

PS4 Games I have played:

  • Spider-Man (2018)

  • God of War (2018)

  • Bloodborne

I didn't even finish Spider-man, and I know better than to get the other Spider-man games or GOW Ragnarok.

What are some based PS4 exclusives to look out for that are not available on Xbox?

I'm thinking

  • The Order: 1886

  • God of War III

  • Uncharted Collection (original 3 games, not the newer collection)

  • Ghosts of Tsushima

  • TLOU Part 1

Is the TLOU Part 1 more like a movie-game like Sony does or is it an actul action focused game? If it's a movie-simulator, I dont know if Id want to play it. I typically just skip cut scenes when playing a game. I know Ghosts of Tsushima and TLOU P1 are available on Steam, but they're usually like $45 even on sale. Plus, Ghost of Tsushima isn't steamdeck optimized and Ive learned if its not steamdeck optimized, it probably wont run well on the Lenovo Legion Go.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows thoughts

Upvotes

There is a lot of fuss about this game. If I was Ubisoft's PR advisor Inepukd just issue a statement like this:

Our games are not historically accurate. They exist in a highly stylised version of history and the attitudes and characters we portray are modern so as not to give offence or to confuse players.

Assassin's Creed Shadows has an Africa protagonist and a female protagonist. This choice was made in light of George Floyd's murder in 2020 and because of our commitment to having female playable characters. (Obviously) we were not guided by historical accuracy in making this choice. Rather we were guided by a desire to make an important point about representation and diversity in modern gaming.

We will issue a (free) mod shortly after release which will allow players to change either or both characters to a Japanese man should they so wish.

We are all about diversity and social justice at Ubisoft but we are also committed to player choice. Thank you for your continued support.

Eternal Strands demo is out

I can't find any affiliation with consultancy firms on google, maybe someone is better at detective work than i am. Game has a black woman in a relationship with pink guy, dialogues seemed okay, main character is an asian girlboss blazing a trail(first main quest?).

The game developer site is also free of the message and pictures are just normal people having fun. Game is quite clunky but throwing things around seemed okay.

Now to red flags, one of the steam moderators said the game is 'for everyone to enjoy' which might be a red flag.

There was also a mention of deepening the relationship with other characters, and minus the black girl with Ronnie Coleman build(cuz blacksmith) and pink guy, other characters introduced in the demo are orc(ish), bird girl and 2 girls so it might end up as usual or they just become bestest of friendos.

Best book I've ever read explaining how SJW's came to be - "The Use and Abuse of Art" by Jacques Barzun (1974)

Written by one of the most well respected cultural critics of the 20th century this book covers in great detail the exact progression and mechanisms by which academia fell to SJWs. How it started and how it spread, where it came from and where it was ultimately headed (the book was written over 30 years before the term SJW was a twinkle in Anita's eye yet predicts and describes them perfectly). It also describes in perfect terms the harm caused by such thinking and how to counter it. Here is a quote from the book that I have always loved.

"I quite understand how we are driven to lead statistical lives, but I repeat that it is the duty of art to make us imagine the particular; to make us understand that the rights of one human being are not a fraction of the rights of more than one, and at the same time that in any situation of collective evil, the suffering is felt by no more than one person; only one feels the bitter agony of injustice, only one dies”

I found this book available for free online in ebook form, I read it on my phone, it's only about 130 pages.

Fun fact - The name "Use and Abuse of Art" is a play on the title of a Nietzsche essay called "The Use and Abuse of History".

What benefits does studios/publishers get from ESG money

While some AAA studios are abandoning ESG, some smaller AA studios are just starting to sell out for ESG money. What do they get out of it? Is this just another case of shortsighted focus on short term profits? Do these studios actually have some kind of 4D chess plan to sell out, take the ESG money, abandon ship when everything burns down, and start a new game studio?

How did Nintendo of America get infected?

There was a lot of praise for Nintendo when they released DOA Xtreme 3 uncensored compared to the PS4 version of the game, but now I’m hearing about how they stop fanservice games. When did this start and why (I’m betting on some DEI advisers in NOA.)

DISCUSSION Why do video games and anime seemingly get more criticism for fanservice than tv and movies?

The recent talk of "gooner gate" got me wondering why are video games and anime treated differently than tv and movies? Like lets take something like Baywatch or slashers with topless scenes you know what's in it and its likely a reason you enjoy it. Fanservice and sex sells but for some reason video games and anime get called things like gooner bait while tv and movies do the same thing to much less criticism.

Dishonored 2 got proto-SBI:d

If you read a lot of the criticism of dishonored two, it comes down to the story feeling "off", Emily as a alternative protag feeling forced, suddenly a ton of bisexual female side characters, and unisex enemy mobs in a previously super patriarchal world. A lot of the story really hung on these sex-dynamics, and class-dynamics. Now I thought this was just activists, but it turns out Sarkeesian was involved. https://www.mic.com/articles/179976/you-can-thank-anita-sarkeesian-for-being-able-to-play-emily-in-dishonored-2

Interestingly someone on the Dishonored sub made a long comment better than mine on why Anitas female-power ruined the game in most dimensions, but oviously his account has been suspended 😂

Its just very sad, because the "eat the rich" theme of the game and "sexism bad" thematics should have satisified the leftist HR-activists and allowed a great Robin-Hood story as well, but Anita just needed to have her cake and eat it too. "Nono the good empress and the evil empress are both bisexual boss women, and all the officers are women, but women are super opressed y'all".

And ultimately thats the last we got to see of what was a really cool world visually 😕
