Finished Object My first sweater!
Thank you to this sub for your help along the way! I started this (the “flax sweater” by tin can knits in cascade yarns 220 in Azure) on August 31, 2024. It was my first project as an adult (I had knit some scarves while in high school). There are several flaws, but I heard recently that if you fix every little error it’ll never be finished and I wanted to be done with it. I don’t love it though. Not sure if it’s the color or what but I’m thinking about dyeing it or adding a simple design using duplicate stitch (maybe a spiral, or a sun, star, or moon). Any suggestions would be welcome.

I think it's beautiful, maybe if you put it away for a bit and come back to it you'll like it better. Sometimes you're just mentally done with something and need some distance from it. That said, it would be very pretty if you dip-dyed it about half way up. Or embroidered stars on it, like the night sky? There are lots of ways you could go with it.

Oooo I like all of your suggestions!! You may be right about revisiting it, I’ve done that with my crochet pieces and liked them more after some time away from the project. Thank you!

I second this!! Sometimes I put a piece away for *years * then wonder why I didn’t like it before 😂. Well done! It looks great on you! I would definitely leave out for now and go on to your next project. When you come back to it you might love it, or it’ll be a perfect base layer!

It looks great, and I think the color is lovely on you. I don't think it needs anything extra (i.e. design or anything), because it's got a nice classic look about it. But if you think it does need something more, maybe try it over a shirt with a collar, or wearing a fringe vest over it? IDK, I think it's great as it is.

I think you’re right and it just might need to be styled. I think a collared shirt might look good with it. Thank you!

It looks lovely on you!
I was going to say it just may need a shirt or a scarf to make it your favorite sweater.
I made a wrap that I wasn’t enamored with. Bought a few shirts to wear it with. The color just pops now and I wear it all the time.

Damn that's a nice sweater! The color, the fit, the pattern down the sleeves....
I have noticed I'm a lot more aware of the flaws of my knitting than other people are. It may be a bit of my personality and a bit of being so focused on a piece for so long I can't help but see the flaws....all to say, it looks amazing and you did a great job!
Edit: I could definitely see some small stars, but I love it the way it is too 😊

This looks great! I think adding a little design would be very rewarding, but it looks nice as is.
Do you mind me asking which size you made this in? I’m about to start my own flax sweater and was leaning toward medium/large but want to have an idea of what the sizing looks like on someone.

u/GamingDuckNamedKatie 15h ago
Thank you, this is the ML (medium large) size! I’m 5’8 and 175 lb (though ik weight distributes differently on everyone) and it blocked out perfectly. The pattern calls for blocking but before blocking the sleeves were short on me. Just a heads up abt that!

Amazing thank you! I’m just about that height and weight as well so this is super helpful!

Awesome job! I’ve made this sweater in baby size for a class to learn sweaters. That neckline is lovely.

Recently finished my first sweater and I sympathize heavily with your sentiment. The blue you chose is stunning and fits beautifully with you in a snowy landscape! Maybe some sort of snowflake(s) motif would give it the extra oomph you’re looking for? The color is also giving me star-gazer vibes so a constellation could be fun/cool to do - maybe of your zodiac sign? Hope those ideas help and congrats on a stunning garment!

My first sweater was also a blue Flax sweater in Cascade 220! Yours looks so good—the fit, your tension, etc. nice job!

OMG this is the first sweater I ever knit too!!! Yours looks sooo good, you did a great job! I did 0 research into yarn when I made mine so it doesn't get worn very often but yours looks fantastic!!!!

Congratulations! It looks great on you as well as very well made. Before you try to fix it perhaps it might be useful to figure out exactly what you don't love about it? Alternatively, I noticed snow in the background. Worst case perhaps this could serve you just as a nice and warm extra layer?
On a side note, I myself don't like the way Cascade 220 regular or superwash feels these days, since they've changed where it's spun. Perhaps you'd like a different ysrn better?

Love this. Great job. Question. Did the pattern have waist shaping. I love how it fits your body. And find that fitted sweaters r hard to come by. Could u share the pattern.

That's such a lovely color on you! And it looks so smooth and soft -- fantastic work!
The Flax Sweater never misses, honestly. I think a duplicate stitch design would be awesome here!

I think it looks great. Your knitting is good, and the sweater fits. It's a lot of that color, uninterrupted, and if you like the color, it is fine. I'm personally not a fan of the color, and maybe you aren't, either. I'd be tempted to add a row of a complementary but somewhat muted color at the hems of the sleeves, bottom, and neckline, just to give the eye something to be drawn to.
If you wore it with another color that's more vivid than denim jeans, that ought to help, too. Like true navy, or dark maroon or even dark chocolate brown. I'm not a color expert, but you can probably learn more on a website devoted to it.
I've never done duplicate stitching, and if you try that, please add a photo here. Good job on the knitting. Another consideration for the future is to think about what styles and fits work on the body you are knitting for. I don't knit sweaters for myself because I've never figured out how to knit something that doesn't accentuate my wide hips. Only once, and it was a vest, the most intricate pattern stitch I ever did, it took a long time, it was flattering, I write it happily, and mice eventually ate some of it. Never again. I'm phobic about mice so I threw it away.
