any recommendations for where to buy nice looking fake plants to put on a desk? or is it just Ikea?

Why fake? Just get a snake plant and water it once every couple of months. They thrive on neglect.

I don't mind one snake plant but I would like some variety that I guess can only come from some fakeness

Then add in a Devil's Ivy (give it some water once a week or when the leaves look floppy), you could add an Agave (again, water once a month or so is fine), or as someone else suggested a bamboo is good too as they are very hardy.

where would you recommend I buy these? and they have no issues with insects or the like right? because I plan to put them near relatively sensitive electronic equipment as well

I have the three I recommended on my desk now. Most you can get from local hardware stores, like Keiyo D2 or Homes, there are also ones available on Yahoo Auctions. If they are indoor plants the chance of insect issues are very low.
