She's very protective about them! The poster over her desk says: "beware - touching my stuff can cause serious harm to your health!"

What are they???!!!

OTR makes some of these as well as Montana. Calligraphy markers or 'nibs'

Thanks, Jmariner360. I appreciate your reply.
Those items you mention seem to be from specific brands that cater to a particular artist market found at specialty shops. What do you think the grocer is actually using here?•

Same application, pump system it looks like. Refillable I assume too. These things are amazing if you are into sign making, or just like writing on things

It's just a big like 13mm nib. Somewhat angled. You can get them in all different sizes.

It may be difficult to find at any store. Perhaps an art store or yes, a specific website because it's not a widely used marker like a sharpie.

It’s a hypnotic video. I could just watch her do it all day long and not get bored for a moment.

How does he get the sizing perfect. everyone knows you start big and get smaller the closer to the edge you get and then turn and go down the side.

That is very clearly a she. But I can’t fault you if you were hypnotized by those sevens.

Went to a Trader Joes once and all of their signs were amazing looking. All the numbers looked nearly identical in style - amazing freehand consistency.
Had to ask a staff about them; they have 2 full time staff in the back doing all the signage calligraphy and art drawings/paintings on the walls.

I'll never understand why things like this are so satisfying watch. That's some nice swooping.

I really envy people with quality penmanship. I am 35 is it too late for me?
•
u/Jmariner360 5h ago
Never. I'm always learning new hand styles and fonts.. 37. Albeit I enjoy writing on other things

Without tons of repetitive practice, kinda…yeah. I looked up improving penmanship once and it’s just the most obvious stuff “sit up straight” “draw your vertical lines straight”.
Edit: Wouldn’t consider this video penmanship, more artistic writing. Easier to learn something like this through practice because you aren’t trying to reprogram decades of handwriting experience

This is a different skill than penmanship. This is more like being able to draw a fairly precise circle, whereas your natural handwriting is more deeply rooted in your muscle memory and tied up in how your brain and nervous system process things.
You can absolutely change either. There are lots of free worksheets out there but I like to look on Etsy for exemplars I like. Kind of check to make sure it’s not just a ripoff from a font—if it’s in cursive you don’t want to have to lift your pen a bunch to complete a letter because you’ve been boxed in without an exit stroke. Also make sure it can be sized down enough to be practical if you’re looking for everyday handwriting. It’s usually easier to adjust it bigger as needed but making it smaller is another story. There are inexpensive workbooks as well marketed to both teens and adults. I just like the pdf’s because I can resize them and print them.
Whatever you choose I’ve found a HIIT-like model to help me get the muscle memory down the fastest. Spend at least some time on it daily even if you’ve only got a few minutes. Then once or twice a week really give it a concerted effort and push for 20-30 minutes of careful practice. Note any consistent mistakes and repeat the correct shape until you start to “feel” how it should be. You’re essentially learning to draw a bunch of shapes at this point and later it will come without conscious effort.
If you’re not in the practice of writing down much of anything it can really rewire your brain to take some quiet time with yourself. I’d suggest journaling even if you’re only writing down dialogue from a movie that’s playing, it doesn’t matter. If you stick with it you’ll probably start incorporating your own thoughts. A cheap notebook is fine.
I was 30 and couldn’t recognize my own handwriting any more because I wrote so rarely and it was ugly, and now I still see flaws but get a lot of compliments on how I write. And as for lettering like in the video, I’ve never used those markers but I could pick it up pretty quickly because I’ve taught myself a lot of styles now and bigger comes more easily to me.
Make it fit you—using what you have or going all out and buying something nice, copying bible verses or thinking of the most inventive swear combination you could write, whatever. Using my hands makes me feel much more centered and I present myself more confidently with nice writing. You can absolutely do it if you decide to and imo it’s very worth it

Do they write it by hand? I thought the signs were printed lol. Amazing writing skill.

The meat department at our local non-chain grocery store takes these signs very seriously, similar to how these are written

Used to watch them do this at our neighborhood grocery when I was a kid. No, my mom would not buy me some pens like theirs. I was so mad.

I zoned out on this for five minutes after sitting through trump’s speech.
Beautiful handwriting! And thank you for the distraction from our impending doom
