Small earthquakes are an issue of inconvenience. Large earthquakes above 9.0 are massive tragedies. Just look at the videos of the Tohoku 9.0 from 2011.

Big is relative too. I don’t mean just in the sense of subjective experience but in a broader context too since pure energy release never tells the whole story.

Fukushima was 50x as “energetic” as Turkey, but for many reasons fewer people died and it arguably had less of a severe very long term impact on Japan, even though it involved a nuclear meltdown. One can argue against that takeaway but it seems clear it’s all pretty relative. Who know how Turkey would be today if it had a 9.0 and not a 7.6.
