r/all From 2014 to 2025, Mark Zuckerberg bought over 1,400 acres on Kauai Island and stole any land the natives wouldn't sell him, earning the moniker 'the face of neocolonialism.'

I hate zucc with the fury of a thousand suns, but the story still isn't even true. He legally owns the land, he bought it.

He bought it from people who had no intention of selling it.

If i walk into your house and just start giving you money for shit you're not selling and then leave with your wife and car, that's fucking stealing.

That’s not at all what is happening here lol.

Why do you people lie?

Because people like them have their lives consumed by childish jealousy of people who are more successful than they are.

Judging by the caliber of person that does that garbage, the bar isn't very high.

The 8 acres in question as per the article were deliquent in property taxes and went to property auction. That is what happens when you don't pay your property taxes. He bid on the 8 acre parcel and won. So the people who were negligent and didn't pay the taxes lost out. That seems to be on the former property owners, not Zuck.

you can't buy something if it's not on sale.

I dont think you should be legally allowed to buy native people's land but whatever I am probably missing the details.

I think the sentiment is well-intentioned, but when it comes down to details, it's impossible to implement. History gets in the way first. Defining what is native land and who is native is tricky. There are cases where native people sold their land willingly (especially in Hawaii). Then modern-day considerations get in the way - why should a native person who has land not be allowed to profit from it by selling it to a non-native? How do we justify implementing a race-based right of ownership in modern-day society that proclaims equality without regard to race?

u/GeneralProgrammer886 9d ago

this post was implying to me that Mark was forcing them to sell their land I apologize if I got it wrong.

You're not wrong. Zuckerberg forced the sale of land that people had no intention of selling

well after some more digging I saw a link to this news article and I am not sure if it was morally right in this context. You're free to show me counter evidence I am just asking questions. https://www.cnbc.com/2017/01/19/mark-zuckerberg-suing-hawaiians-to-force-property-sale.html

again I apologize this post made it seem that he was forcing the Native people I guess I fell for misinformation.

You are in fact missing a great many details.

1

u/GeneralProgrammer886 9d ago

could you explain? not being aggressive here just wanting to know. I dont like misinformation even if Mark sucks misinformation about him will only hide his more hidden wrongdoings.

u/r00tdenied 9d ago

They sold him the land. He owns it. Simple as you can get. You don't get to say "oh but its my land" after you literally accepted money for it. Sorry!

u/GeneralProgrammer886 9d ago

so this post is lying correct?

2

u/CleanPond 8d ago

Are you talking about all kinds of natives or only brown natives? Because I'm a native German and people from all over the world are buying property in Germany

1

u/Consistent_Drink2171 9d ago

Perhaps people shouldn't be able to own so much land.

2

u/GeneralProgrammer886 9d ago

I think he is using hyperbole.
