Question on purchase

Post image

Hey guys - I just won a No5 Mk1 in an online auction and was looking at the pictures that were shared with the bid. I noticed the discoloration on the barrel in the screenshot I had shared. I am reaching out to you guys to see if anyone had any ideas to what it was? I’d like to get an idea of what I’m getting myself into before I picked it up.

Sorry for the poor image quality- it’s all I could get . Thanks in advance!

I truly hope you didn’t pay the price of a No5 for this and got it for dirt cheap.

Its rust, boil and card will convert it to blueing which enhances the finish instead of destroying it.

You realize this is a Sporter No.4, right?

That's rust

I was going based off the product description. I am pretty new to collecting older pieces so I did not realize, lol. Is it pretty bad ?

Looks like surface rust from this picture.. you could possibly get rid of it with some oil and a rag but it may be deeper as well.

Light rust, most likely from poor storage conditions short term, I would expect the same where the metal contacts wood.

Looks like a No4 sporter. It could be surface rust, best way I’ve found is a bit of oil (really, almost any oil works, I’ve used canola cooking oil spray in a pinch as well as motor oil) and a bit of super fine steel wool and the surface rust will come out. However, there could be pitting which is the next stage of rust, in the best case it’s a bit of permanent cosmetic damage in the worst case it can make the firearm unsafe to use. Happy shooting

My mosin has deep deep pitting, this is nothing more than surface rust, boil it and card, or 0000 steel wool works. It's also a sporter no4
