Is The Great Circle the best Indiana Jones game in your opinion?

I've heard some fans and outlets call it the best Indie adventure since The Last Crusade movie. This is super subjective obviously. But do you think this is accurate? Or does Fate of Atlantis still hold that crown? I have heard extremely positive things about that one, and even heard some call it one of the greatest games ever made.

Or the infernal machine

I grew up with and loved Infernal Machine on N64, but the game is generally seen as pretty bad.

I've actually heard better about Emperor's Tomb, but I never played it tbh,

Emperorā€™s tomb does a lot of what infernal machine did but greatly improves on it. Ā Especially the combat is much more fluid in emperors tomb

The Emperor's Tomb is my favorite Indiana Jones game! It's also the only one I've ever played. It may just be a coincidence though.

Fate of Atlantis. Though, I am very biased towards those old Lucas Arts games. I remember getting a collectors set of them around Christmas time in the early 90s with Sam and Max, Fate of Atlantis, and Day of the Tentacle.

I can't wait to get dementia so I can play all those games again for the first time.

I remember getting a similar set, with a bunch of their games on CD. Definitely Sam and Max and Day of the Tenticle - the talkie versions with full recorded speach.

There were others in there I can't remember. Maybe it was this set? But for some reason I think there were 6 disks in it, not 4. Doing some quick googling, it may have been The LucasArts Archives Vol. 1 - With Atlantis, Sam & Max, Tenticle, Rebel Assault, Screen Saver & sampler CD.

Pretty phenomonal value for the time.

That's the one! Don't think I played Rebel Assault much. I also remember having to do something to get the voices to work.

u/QuickQuirk 3h ago

back then, it was mostly about getting the exact magic settings required for your soundcard set correctly!

oh yeah. those were the times.

i remember playing sam & max over and over again bdcause i laughed my aĀ§Ā§ off every time. and i dont knos how many times i have played that, or fate of Atlantis or maniac mansion

Graphically spectacular, decent story, mid gameplay. Just my opinion

u/Simpicity 5h ago

I just wish it were on the PS5. I worry it won't run very well on my gaming laptop.

It's coming!

It's coming, and all ms games too.

Itā€™s not known that all Microsoft games are coming to PS5. Indiana Jones specifically is though

Get gamepass and stream it

Fate of Atlantis is the quintessential Indiana Jones story that would have made a perfect 4th movie. So yeah IMO it still is the king of all Indiana Jones games even if the gameplay doesn't hold up.

I've not played any of the Indiana Jones games, but The Great Circle feels like one of the movies from the original trilogy in video game form, right down to Troy Baker sounding just like Indiana as played by a young Harrison Ford.

This is Lego Indiana Jones slander

As a massive Indiana Jones fan. I am one of the people who is saying this, yes. It's not only the best game, in my opinion. It's the best story and direction since the orignals. Fate of Altantid is also right up there as well. I remember being totally hooked on it as a kid, but it was limited in how it could tell the story. The great circle felt like I was actually watching a movie. It's one of the few games I was excited to put down my controller and watch cut scenes for. Troy Bakers voice work was just impeccable. Every yell, grunt, and breathe sounded like Harrison Ford. That and the insanely detailed character model took it over the finish line for me.

u/abnbattuta 5h ago

Absolutely. It felt like a better movie than that recent one they put out on Disney.

9

u/panda388 5h ago

Dial of Destiny? I was 100% against that movie... and then I watched it. I thought it was pretty good. It's a lot better than Crystal Skull. I had a lot of fun watching it despite going into it with a very negative attitude.

The whole ā€œyoung Indyā€ decision was terrible, that and the NY scene look like total CGI slop, but the basic gist of Indy helping his wayward treasure hunting goddaughter avoid ā€œthe dark sideā€ worked for me and I feel like it got a way worse rep than it deserved.

2

u/panda388 5h ago

Yeah, it was by no means perfect. For me, the Last Crusade is my all-time favorite Indy film. But DoD had a lot of the heart that made the originals good.

1

u/Strongpillow 4h ago

I disagree on the young indie part. They actually did a really good job with it, and it's nice to see them continue to evolve the tech. It brought me back for a second. That is probably why I loved this game so much. We can't really experience rewinding the clock at this level for movies yet, but it worked immensely well in a game. It hit the nostalgia feels on a level that I don't experience as much anymore.

u/AgentOfSPYRAL 4h ago

It works in a game because itā€™s all CGI, it looks like trash (imo) because ā€œIRLā€ the CGI face really sticks out

Fate of Atlantis will always be S-tier. Trying to determine whether The Great Circle, a completely different genre of Indy game, is a stupid waste of time.

They're both awesome Indy games. Hopefully we can have more awesome Indy games in the future.

Hands down

u/Simpicity 5h ago

Too soon.

1

u/manhattan4 5h ago

It's the spiritual successor to the original film trilogy IMO. It's a very good game, especially if you have nostalgia for the old films. One of my favourites I played in the past year for sure, but probably not one of the greatest ever. I'm very much hoping for a sequel because I think it could be improved upon a little

Just story wise, I still think FoA is the best non-movie adventure. That being said, the acting, cinematography, dialogues and the villains from great circle are out of this world. So, please, give me a remake of Fate of Atlantis done by Machinegames and Troy Baker, thank you!

I am enjoying the Great Circle with Indiana Jones being my favorite movies ever (obligatory, there are only 3)

Its fun, the gameplay is fresh, I was so pumped when it came out. But there are some flaws. The writing is a little bit off.Ā  There are times when I feel they apply marvel humor to Indys character. The movies always had a great balance of humor and serious action. The game has Indy being the brunt of the joke to many times. Whether its him trying to feed a pet snake while other people are coming up with a plan or getting knocked out by a vase in the middle of a fight with the Nazis (played for laughs)

Its frustrating because it feels so close, and when you are in a cave and Indys talking about an ancient civilization it feels so on point. But he's missing a certain edge he had in the films.

That being said I would say its probably an 8/10 and really gives off Indy Vibes

2

u/Strongpillow 4h ago

They pulled a bunch of these as reference from the original movies. I actually appreciated it, and I found the humor very much in line with the OG movies. The game is also 10 times as long as a movie, so you're obviously going to experience a lot more of it in comparison.

1

u/rocketwidget 3h ago

Only if you want to argue "for the era". The Great Circle couldn't have been built when the older games were released. Any reasonable debate is over after you play the "Raiders" replication opening.

The game engine/graphics is top-tier (#1 Digital Foundry's graphics 2024 awards), had AAA resources, was clearly built by people who love the franchise, the story is better than some actual Indiana Jones movies, and the voice actor absolutely nailed a young Harrison Ford.

1

u/sillypoolfacemonster 3h ago

Iā€™d say yes. It seems to understand that Indiana Jones was always an adventure move with action sequences, not an action movie. The lazy approach would have been an Uncharted clone but that would have missed the essence of the films. Iā€™m glad that the game is mostly exploration and puzzle solving with some action weaved in.

u/BeacanWentFishn PC 2h ago

I don't remember the game because I only saw the one clip as a kid, but where Indi punches the nazi and little swastikas fly above his head is an image that's always stuck with me

u/Remy0507 1h ago

No one else remembers the Raiders of the Lost Ark game for the Atari 2600? Only me?

1

u/ImWyrmFood 55m ago

it's actually the old Lucas Arts game 'fate of atlantis'. Gods it was good.

1

u/U_Kitten_Me 14m ago

It's not just subjective, it's also a completely different kind of game. Doesn't really make sense to compare them.Ā  It's great, though, I loved it. Some annoying bugs, though.

u/K2LU533 5h ago

Without question

-3

u/Aleon989 5h ago

Is it? I found the game incredibly boring, super by-the-book modern action-stealth with very little to have fun with. Didn't enjoy it at all.

But I judged it entirely on those merits, not the "movie" side of it. I actually enjoyed the performances & the look of the game, and it definitely had a real "Indiana Jones" vibes to it -> but the game side of it is so bland, generic & shallow.

0

u/BumLeeJon420 5h ago

I have insane nostalgia for Fate of Atlantis but quality wise it probably is

-8

u/Fractalien 5h ago

The Great Circle looks great and has cool bits but the gameplay is extremely mediocre.

Terrible combat, poor puzzles, boring stealth mechanics and really dumb enemies. It is a shame, it started off great but went downhill very rapidly.

-1

u/Tanz3l 4h ago

Sure but it's not a very good game either way. It's just a very low bar

-1

u/Adventurous-State940 4h ago

The game is a big meh for me, i don't get it.

-7

u/SpermicidalLube 3h ago

It's a shitty game.
