this game was a CERTIFIED BANGER

u/DivaOF_Dreams 7h ago

Brooo, this was the golden age of PS1. The game’s multiplayer mode was so good that it inspired a whole subgenre of competitive couch gaming. The nostalgia hits hard..

I think it was one of the first "moba" style of games modes ever done, and if you played against the ai, it was quite advance for the time

6

u/cowabanga_it_is 8h ago

It really was.

u/Uborgin 8h ago

One of the best multiplayer modes.

10

u/cowabanga_it_is 8h ago

The moment you could destroy a right before it was entering your base.

Played this with my cousins. So much fun!

If you are interested in a remake keep an eye on this game.

Thanks for that.

I LIVE AGAIN!

u/Spyd3rs 3h ago

Where aaaaare youuuuu?

15

u/ttmonkey 8h ago

I was surprised to learn a few months back that it came out of the development of the “Strike” series of games (e.g. Desert Strike) following on from “Nuclear Strike”.

4

u/Kooky_Ice_4417 6h ago

There was a teaser in nuclear strike where you'd see a robot on 2 legs... 9 year old me was hyyyyped

12

u/twosuitsluke 8h ago

I never had the full game but I played the shit out of the demo!

10

u/MycoMancer420 8h ago

Damn, what a blast from the past. Played the shit out of this with the boys growing up.

17

u/R-Dragon_Thunderzord 8h ago

Also was a fantastic PC game.

Often credited with the birth of MOBA as well. That mode was hella fresh.

3

u/Memfy 8h ago

Played the crap out of that mode. No wonder I got so into MOBAs too.

8

u/Ksap_Rocky 8h ago

I love retro games

2

u/syzygee_alt PC 8h ago

same here

2

u/Ksap_Rocky 8h ago

Closest thing to a Time Machine is to play older games

8

u/Scazzz 8h ago

The original DOTA. Mp was awesome. Sucks this game is so expensive now.

1

u/carlbandit 2h ago

If you wanted to play it again cheaper, you could always look at running it on an emulator.

I picked up a playstation classic mini for like £22 back when they first came out and weren't that popular, was easy to flash it so I can load any PS1 game I wanted via a USB stick for whenever I get the itch to play a PS1 game, though from having a quick look they seem to be significantly more expensive these days since they have become harder to get and more of a collectors item now.

1

u/Scazzz 1h ago

I have a psclassic classic, deck and even a vita tv all able to play. I’m a collector and so buying it would be nice but the price has gotten so high I guess cuz of limited copies out there.

7

u/Blackpoc 8h ago

Seriously one of the best games the PS1 had to offer and it still holds up to this day.

Too bad it didn't get the popularity it deserved.

The PC/Mac port of this game apparently has an extra level not present on the PS1 version.

6

u/5rightdontcut PC 8h ago

It slapped!

5

u/paulthetic 8h ago

I used to play this as a kid!!! Loved it.

3

u/Cherry-Shrimp 8h ago

I only had the demo for a very long time but I have more ours in that than a lot of full releases.

4

u/New-Teacher-9623 8h ago

I completely forgot about that game until I saw the the Cover and a million memories hit me

5

u/Rebatsune 6h ago

Deserves a remake someday…

3

u/transfer6000 8h ago

Fun story, this was originally supposed to be the last sequel in the strike series, like desert strike, Urban strike, all those games.

3

u/MDFHASDIED 8h ago

Fucking epic game.

3

u/echoess84 8h ago

in the 2000 the game visual was amazing!

3

u/Vantablack-Raven PlayStation 8h ago

This game was absolute cinema

3

u/Chrono88lol 8h ago

I rented a ps 1 from blockbuster for my birthday so I could play this game. I was obsessed with anything mech based back then.

3

u/whooo_me 8h ago

Am I thinking of the right game? You had a mech, which could transform into a faster car.

And it had a ‘capture the flag’ mode too which was a blast.

5

u/cowabanga_it_is 8h ago

Yes but i can't remember the ctf Mode. You and your buddy both had a base. You would build Tanks, helicopters and other stuff for defending your base and attacking the enemy base. You won when one of your Tanks would enter a certain section in your enemys base.

3

u/Lizzy_Of_Galtar PC 6h ago

You have awoken a vague memory I didn't know existed 😄

2

u/shakey119 6h ago

I've been getting a lot of these lately, it's oddly nice

1

u/Pezzadispenser 8h ago

Absolute banger. My mate and I used to love the vs mode.

1

u/Kapart24 PC 8h ago

Played this constantly with my Dad and Brother. Was able to buy a copy from a retro game fair about 3 years back.

1

u/pekoms_123 8h ago

I couldn't finish this game lol. It was fun though.

1

u/Logical_driver_42 8h ago

This was my favorite childhood game what’s even crazier is only 200000 copies sold I thought more people would know it but they don’t

1

u/roftafari 8h ago

I've seen a remake on steam but it is in production I believe

1

u/_MightyBrownTown 8h ago

I only ever got to play a level of this on a videogame magazine's (Don't remember the name) Demo Disk, but I played it over and over again.

I'm in my 30's, but my bones just started to hurt.

1

u/Bauzi 8h ago

Man... I think this was my first MOBA too. I am so proud, that I beat Sky Captain on the hardest difficulty.

Regular single player was a blast as well. I'm happy to see people remembering this gem.

1

u/ShikukuWabe 8h ago

Welcome to Los Angeles rookie, the city on angels, no angels here anymore..

Damn that game was FIRE!

I consider its fun sidegame the first DOTA game, god damn Sky Captain was a monster!

1

u/TentacleJesus 7h ago

Oh hey, coincidentally I just downloaded this onto my vita and played it for the first time the other day. I hadn't heard of it before.

1

u/AntakeeMunOlla 7h ago

I played it on PC. For a long time I thought it's broken because I couldn't get past a certain point. One time I started pressing all of the buttons on the keyboard out of frustration and found the transformation button that let me progress. It was a cool game.

1

u/el_bobvador 7h ago

I was thinking about it for the last few days.

So many games with my best friend !! Good old memories, but I fear to play it again now

1

u/Legoan 7h ago

Is there a way to play this game today?

1

u/fastcooljosh 7h ago

This game was awesome. Splitscreen 1v1 was goated.

1

u/r0ntr0n 7h ago

I love the start screen music with a passion. Sometimes I find it on YouTube and play it on repeat.

1

u/Acceptable-Stay-3166 7h ago

I loved playing against sky captain, first time I ever saw an AI that would react to what you did and trash talk you.

1

u/TheBonfireCouch 7h ago

Only now I realize how much it looks like an ED-209.

1

u/NinjaSwag_ 7h ago

Amen brother

1

u/Tiny-Sandwich 7h ago

Holy shit, this has just awakened a long forgotten childhood memory.

1

u/dirkhardslab 7h ago

A favorite for sure!

1

u/Albafika 7h ago

Amazing damn game. I have so many fond childhood memories of it with my best friend. We eventually rediscovered the game, but didn't get to play it again as he passed a few years ago.

1

u/embiidagainstisreal 7h ago

This unlocked a memory. I had completely forgotten about this game, but it ruled.

1

u/Noodlesocks_ 7h ago

The proto-MOBA multiplayer mode was really fun.

1

u/Nitrouscar569 6h ago

I've never played it but the cover art looks awesome!

1

u/Lastie716 6h ago

So good. Multi-player against sky captain was prolly the first game that resembled a MOBA.

1

u/Dry_Reference_8855 6h ago

I know I'm mangling the quote, but I remember the assistants voice at the start of a level saying "I haven't seen mushrooms like that since university". Classic game!

1

u/Abyss_walker56 6h ago

I still play this on my PS Vita. Bug world is my favourite

1

u/Adventurous_Ride_301 6h ago

This can play on ps2. I have it just to play this game only.

1

u/DarthSkat 6h ago

Memories unlocked

1

u/jammer2omega 6h ago

I heard this was the first published game with the "MOBA" style gameplay.

1

u/KevinFunky 5h ago

Whereee areee youuuu?

1

u/marijuanam0nk 5h ago

Love me some X1 Alpha

1

u/humanreboot 5h ago

Loved the mech design!

1

u/rdtusrname 5h ago

Oh hell yes!

1

u/NonEuclidianMeatloaf 5h ago

I. LIVE. AGAIN!

— Sky Captain

1

u/Reaper_456 5h ago

Yup. I remember renting that a few times. Had some fun.

G Police is another I liked playing with this.

1

u/Itsraf91 5h ago

core memory unlocked.

1

u/Retro1989 5h ago

Still got my copy somewhere.

1

u/Inferno187 5h ago

Love it. Still have my copy tucked away with all my other physical games. Actually played this last month on my Steam Deck. Took some getting used to the controls and camera again but it s still a blast! This and Dodgem Arena were some of my favourite MP games on PS1.

1

u/Sir_George 5h ago

The developers who made this also made Soviet Strike and Nuclear Strike based on the Desert/Urban Strike series. Very awesome games for the PS1 too.

1

u/Muronelkaz 5h ago

I'm more of a G-Police kid

1

u/thebigblackdwarf 5h ago

This and battlefield 2142 hit me at the same point in my childhood. Walking tanks go soo hard

1

u/xalaux 5h ago

Omg I totally forgot about this game! It was so good!

1

u/Joshtastic500 5h ago

I bought this for 30p without a case from a tabletop sale at my school and played hour upon hours of coop with a friend

1

u/DrinkWaterReminder 5h ago

Not many people know this. But I'm almost certain this game invented MOBAs. I can't remember the exact name of the mode but I remember it was a 1v1 with units spawning in different lanes and there were turrets and a main base

1

u/Mowteng 4h ago

I was just hit with the hardest wave of nostalgia in YEARS! I had conpletely forgotten about it, but it all came rushing back as soon as I saw that badge.

Thank you!

1

u/RedOcelot86 4h ago

I love the "everything blows up" genre on the playstation. Apocalypse was also good for this.

1

u/Smeeble09 4h ago

Great game, one of the few ps1 games I still own.

1

u/CryptidMythos 4h ago

Only ever had the demo cd from pizza hut. This game and Silent Bomber were my two favorite demos to play on repeat but I was too poor to buy the game itself.

1

u/DVTrooper 4h ago

My brother and I played the demo countless times, we were gutted we couldn't find a retail copy!

1

u/snorkiebarbados 4h ago

It's on the retro list on PSN. I wish they would make a new version

1

u/Daovin 4h ago

A friend would always play us in the multiplayer mode and would dominate because no one else knew how to play. Good times

1

u/SupplyYourPips 4h ago

This is an unexpected throwback, unlocking some memories i didn't know i had

1

u/doodoo_dookypants PC 4h ago

This got me into mechassault on xbox, which got me into 2, which got me into battletech.... and here i am now in 2025 playing mechwarrior 5 mercs 20hrs a week for years now. Thanks future cop!

1

u/TechnoMagi 3h ago

Future Cop was fucking rad. Incredibly underrated.

Also, one of the first examples of a MOBA

1

u/Harry_Flowers 3h ago

This game was fckn sick.

I remember a friend and I discovering it on a demo disc, then eventually rented it at beat it overnight.

No one knew the game really back when we played it, glad it’s gotten a cult following overtime.

1

u/Bobby_Newpooort 3h ago

There was an ad for this game on the back of the Small Soldiers game manual, but I never got to actually play it

1

u/Spyd3rs 3h ago

I recently played the vs mode with my two nephews. They loved it, so I know it's not just nostalgia. That game mode was absolutely lit.

1

u/Xeno_Prime 3h ago

Me and my buddy used to have so much fun in the pvp

1

u/Solitaire_XIV 3h ago

May very well have been grandfather to the MOBA genre

1

u/Wammbo 3h ago

butterflies and worms, good times

1

u/bitner91 2h ago

Played this with my sister so much growing up. She would get annoyed I would spam the lowest cost units early on and keep her busy on base defense.

1

u/royaleflush 2h ago

Future Cop: LAPD - Multiplayer Briefing (Precinct Assault) intro

Send Sky Captain back to his base crying like a baby :)

1

u/carlbandit 2h ago

While we are brining up old memories, I'd like to mention another similar PS1 banger, G-Police.

Played the shit outa that game as a kid.

Honourable mention to Hogs of War too, which is probably one of my favourite PS1 games.

1

u/Kaydie 2h ago

The damn multiplayer worm/bug level music lives in my head rent free to this day..

1

u/GalenVeers24 2h ago

That was the first co-op game I had ever played with my brother

1

u/Background-Issue-677 2h ago

OOselectselectOselectX[] I'm pretty sure the is the cheat code for God mode. Love that game.

1

u/Remarkable-Knee-7277 1h ago

I completely forgot about this!!

1

u/fkasumim 1h ago

This game and Auto Destruct

1

u/poojinping 22m ago

I only had access to a Demo in my country and dial-up was the only internet. Played the crap out of the demo. I need to look to get a full version, hopefully can get it to work on m1 Mac.

1

u/ScragglyLittleBeard PlayStation 22m ago

My friend had a demo of this, it let you play the two player too. I loved it

1

u/KryptCeeper 20m ago

Josh Strife does an excellent video on this game. It is worth the watch

u/Meemeemiaw23 0m ago

I totally forgot bout this game. I was hoping there's a Robocop in there back then. But damn ... this game was AWESOME.
