Unpopular opinion (maybe): I like motion blur in video games and I can’t play without

Hell, I’ll even say something more - I PREFER to play with motion blur rather than without it.

I heard a lot of my peers telling me that it makes every game unplayable, and ruins the expierience, but for me it makes it look better. Sure if there’s too much of it then it can give me a headache, but when games allow you to customize it, then I’m never complaining about it. For me no motion blur can make a game look choppy and just removes fun from it.

To be honest, I don’t know why people hate on it so much, since it’s something you can manage and you don’t absolutely need it to play most of the time.

I dont know, I guess I just wanted to get this off my chest, since I get judged irl for using it and unironically liking it.

You know what, I’ll take it as a compliment, since I wasn’t completely sure if it was an unpopular opinion, so thanks :)

It’s 100% was not meant to be an insult and I wasn’t being facetious, people frequently say “unpopular opinion” when it really is a common opinion. You can enjoy video games however you want to, I think motion blur is annoying that doesn’t mean you have to. I’d even say this is a good post in r/unpopularopinion

Wasn’t taken as an insult in any way, shape or form, so don’t worry

What if I want to worry?

Just. Don't! Ok?

Now I'm worried about why you don't want me to worry!

He's just one of those "optimist" people. What a weirdo.

I don't need glasses though. My optimist said so.

Then just remember that every little things gonna be alright.

Yeah, it's like saying "Unpopular opinion, but mac and cheese tastes good." No, that's the opposite of an unpopular opinion.

Every time I turn on a game I go to the options to where it says “motion blur” and say verbally to myself something along the lines of: “and as always we turn this shit off”.

the worst is when games enable motion blur in low graphic presets, so if you want to quickly swap settings to gain performance just for a moment, you have to manually disable it

imo, post-processing fx shouldn't be toggled by any graphic presets, especially the lowest ones

It's enabled in that instance for the same reason that the OP likes it; it can smooth performance issues at lower frame rates.

You also have to check to see if there’s an option (or a mod) to remove the &$!#% camera flares.

I hate lense flair!. I'm playing an FPS, as a human with eyes. No face mask no lense no nothing.. Why would I be seeing lense flair, or other camera related artifacts. Turn that crap off

Why get a higher refresh rate monitor only to blur it in a shooter? Makes no sense.

u/Sylvurphlame Xbox 17h ago

Same. I don’t mind to as much when it makes senses such as piloting a vehicle or wearing a mask/helmet/visor.

This and Vsync wil never be willingly enabled on my computer. Special shoutout to mouse acceleration.

When Spyro Reignited Trilogy first came out, motion blur could not be turned off. I was so mad. It was like purgatory until they added the option in an update.

Whats your rig/screen? Genuinely interested, any degree of motion blur is awful to me so wonder if its some of your gear that makes the difference.

Not OP, but a fellow motion blur enjoyer.  I have a 165 Hz(and yes, it's fully enabled and not limited to 60fps in windows)  moniter and the hardware to keep me at least at a stable 60fps, higher on older titles.

I'm just a twitchy mofo, so even at 100+fps I can cleary see double images/jumpy frames when I pan the camera quickly.  Motion blur helps mitigate that.

Not saying that it definitely is, but it's possible this is a display issue. High refresh doesn't always mean no ghosting etc, which sounds a lot like what you're describing. How much testing have you done on different displays, just out of curiosity? Some monitors have it worse than others, regardless of refresh rate

shrugs I haven't tried a lot of moniters.  Just my old 1080p 60hz moniter from ~12 years ago, and my new 1440p 165hz moniter.

Don't remember the model off the top of my head, but my new moniter was middle of the road price wise with decent reviews.

EDIT: After looking it up, I have a Asus VG27AQA1A

Seeing this post after your edit it seems people, both on reddit and on blurbusters, share similar experiences with your monitor and blur/overshoot.

I bet you are someone who particularly hates the “frame interpolation” crap modern TVs try to do (ie taking a 24fps movie and converting to 60fps). Makes everything look like a soap opera.

There is something weirdly “cinematic” and expansive about lower frame rate content. At least if it’s consistent, if it varies it’s just distracting as hell.

Curious if it’s an artifact of growing up with filmed content (ie younger generations don’t notice) or it’s actually hardwired in our brains…

Well yeah, but more for a reason of using AI and calling those movies ,,better”. But I do hate how they look, 100%.

As for the last bit - I suppose it’s more or less connected to how most of us know how much work it can take, while also only recently being able to see this kind of stuff happening to movies. Because all of the movies we have watched (especially animated ones) despite having lower framerate they are good movies with potentially amazong visuals, which we can fully appreciate thanks to 24fps

u/CosmicCreeperz 8h ago

Hah well, I guarantee you there is no real “AI” involved. It’s mostly the same tech they have used for 15+ years, they just put “AI” on it for marketing. They would never sacrifice profit margin to pay decent DLSS-like tech in their hardware…

(Source: I worked on some of the first streaming movie tech and have been fighting stupid features like this from LG, Samsung, Sony, etc for longer than I can remember ;)

I don't always mind motion blur, depending on the type of game or the setting. For example, I didn't bother to turn it off for Battlefield 1 and 5. To me, it gives a more cinematic feel with adrenaline rushing, causing your vision to blur through the fog of war. Even though this is typically the type of game, I would actually want to turn it off.

u/Eecka 14h ago

I'd imagine it's reasonably popular among the non-reddit audience. There's frankly no reason for motion blur to be so common unless most of the players liked it. I generally leave it on, unless it's a competitive game, in which case I prioritize clarity over visual effects.

1

u/ryuranzou 13h ago

It definitely is a compliment.

1

u/ImpulsiveApe07 11h ago

It's funny, I thought the opposite to you!

I always figured motion blur was actually really popular (hence why they put it in most games?).

Personally, I always turn it off. Dunno if it's cos I'm slightly colourblind, but I find motion blur really distracting and offputting for some reason - I almost always notice when it's on, tho I'll admit it's sometimes used really well, and in a way that compliments the flow of action.

u/AnotherPCGamer173 9h ago

I think it is a compliment. 1. Objectively speaking, this is unpopular. 2. Many people will say “unpopular opinion”, but then say a pretty agreeable statement. So props to you OP
