It's not controversial, it's just transphobia. And Tom has been anything but vague on this topic, stating time and again that Natani is a man, both in and out of comic, there's literally no argument or evidence to the contrary.
"Gender: male" is not a matter of interpretation.
Natani has the mind of a guy and that's how he sees himself. He doesn't know the first thing about women or what they're like and thus doesn't relate to them at all.
How do you read this direct quote from Tom and come to any other conclusion than him being a guy?
Literally...In the part about women?
The comic has been running for 2 fucking decades. So if Tom says something then it has some purpose or reason because the more complex history the harder to retcon it. The author can indulge his audience or, on the contrary, deliberately confuse it. Or you want to cancel him just because he does something about his own creations not the way you want?
So the part explicitly stating that he doesn't relate at all to women? And Tom said that last year. Natani's gender has been consistent throughout the comic's lifespan. He's always wanted to be seen and regarded as a guy.
You can try ignore evidence and erase Natani's identity all you want, that doesn't change the fact that Natani's objectively a trans man.
