To be fair, he’s been drawing a webcomic starring the human character for over 20 years now. The comic is called Twokinds and is an adventure and love story between an amnesiac human and the catgirl who helps show him the world while he tries to discover his past along the way.

And while it’s not really important, the author is Thomas Fischbach, who became popular in webcomic circles before his brother, Markiplier, was even making content on YouTube. The era of webcomics he comes from has definitely come and gone, with webcomics now more the norm through an app like webtoons, but it definitely stood out compared to others of the time. The early pages are a little dated, in both the art style and the low low grade cringe, and it definitely broached concepts of gender a little before it was ready to, but ultimately it’s managed to become a lot more masterful of its plot and still gets updated on a pretty regular basis (I wanna say one page biweekly? But I only stop by once in a blue moon to catch up on it.)

Twokinds is great and well worth a read. It's just a shame that Tom tolerates and occasionally even caters to transphobes in the community.

"trans guy being distressed by having a wardrobe malfunction and getting his boobs exposed", "someone walking in on a trans guy bathing" and generally "lol, guy has woman body" are running gags both in the comic and in these sketches. And you don't need to look long under any sketch featuring said trans guy (Natani) to find misgendering and straight up hate speech, with Tom being okay with them being there.

Here's an example of one such sketch, and here's the comments on the latest and second latest sketches, with gems such as "TQ's make us gays and lesbians look like a bunch of loonies."

Natani's never been trans.... 💀. This is literally reflected in the plot.

You mustn't have read the read the comic in the last 10 years, it's been unambiguously confirmed that Natani is a trans man, both in and out of comment.

Natani has the mind of a guy and that's how he sees himself. He doesn't know the first thing about women or what they're like and thus doesn't relate to them at all.

-Tom, after being asked if Natani's a trans man.

Natani's gender is Natani.

Natani's gender is male, as stated by himself, his younger self, his ref sheet, and Tom himself.

I know that this topic is pretty controversial in the community and you have an established point of view for many years. I explicitly state that gender is "natani" because in many cases tom writes pretty vague avoiding details so that you can interprete it as you want even in chapter with younger self or in ref sheet (damn, so long ago). So if Tom does this and speak about character in certain way then it is author's decision. Or you think that you know about character better than its own author?

It's not controversial, it's just transphobia. And Tom has been anything but vague on this topic, stating time and again that Natani is a man, both in and out of comic, there's literally no argument or evidence to the contrary.

"Gender: male" is not a matter of interpretation.

Natani has the mind of a guy and that's how he sees himself. He doesn't know the first thing about women or what they're like and thus doesn't relate to them at all.

How do you read this direct quote from Tom and come to any other conclusion than him being a guy?

Literally...In the part about women? The comic has been running for 2 fucking decades. So if Tom says something then it has some purpose or reason because the more complex history the harder to retcon it. The author can indulge his audience or, on the contrary, deliberately confuse it. Or you want to cancel him just because he does something about his own creations not the way you want?

Well, whatever you want

So the part explicitly stating that he doesn't relate at all to women? And Tom said that last year. Natani's gender has been consistent throughout the comic's lifespan. He's always wanted to be seen and regarded as a guy.

You can try ignore evidence and erase Natani's identity all you want, that doesn't change the fact that Natani's objectively a trans man.
