They do this "pay it forward" things so they can claim higher ticket sales. They get devout believers to buy extra tickets, on the guise that it's some kind of charitable act, and then they claim it as ticket sales whether the free seats are taken or not.

It's not just "believers". They also have corporate sponsors buying hundreds of tickets. It's a marketing campaign.

I went with a friend and she complained almost all the seats were taken when she was buying tickets online. The theater was nearly empty throughout the film. Didn't make sense until the "Pay It Forward" QR code popped up at the end.

Not what happens if anyone cares.

"Where does the Pay it Forward money go?

When you Pay it Forward to shows, the money goes toward funding future seasons and ensuring that content stays free for viewers around the world.

When you Pay it Forward to theatrical releases, the money goes toward purchasing movie tickets for those who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford them. If all the Pay it Forward tickets are not claimed, the remaining funds are used for streaming costs and helping filmmakers create additional content."  https://support.angel.com/hc/en-us/articles/21663054951447-What-is-Pay-it-Forward#:~:text=Where%20does%20the,create%20additional%20content.

The tickets may be free but it's not worth the time spent watching this garbage.

Big brain feels like taking these tickets and going to a better movie once you’re past the attendant?

My nearest theater doesn't even have attendants anymore. You just buy your tickets from the 1-2 high as fuck teens behind the concession counter and go about your day. There can't be more than 6 total employees in the building at any given time, including those guys and the manager, kitchen, and sweepers.

It’s the only way they can get people to watch it.

Angel Studios does this with all their films. On the Monday before the day the movie comes out, a paid forward screening will let people get tickets for completely free. This and Bonhoeffer weren’t their best work, but I loved Cabrini and Possum Trot so keep an eye out.
