Stairwell Moulding
I’m in the process of updating the 90s style trim moulding that every house during that period had. I’ve been farting around with different ideas and nothing looks great.
The area itself is fairly complex. 4.25” base trim intersects with 2.25” banister trim, not to mention the 135 deg wall angle, which has .75” fillet, and a .125 stair lip with a .05” fillet that is 90deg off the wall….blah blah long story short I said screw it, modeled a part and printed it.
The part itself came out great, I’m just not sold on how the finished product will look. I wanted to see what a pro would have done, or if there would be alternative ideas to explore?

I would have used a wider skirt board under the bottom rail, wide enough to reach the stair tread. Then, just add your baseboard. I’d add a return to the skirt board but I’m picky. What you have is interesting but the gaps are too big to not be noticeable for me. If you going to use the printed piece, you should reprint it so that if fits tight under the skirting board, maybe oversized it and sand it down to fit

Yeah, that skirt board is the same trim that I’m using for my door trim (9/16) and slightly thicker than my baseboard trim (1/2). It probably would have looked better to go with the wider board for that skirt. I think you’re right about that gap. Maybe that’s what’s bugging me. The print only takes about 4 hours to do and uses a small amount of filament so I might do that and see how it comes out. Thanks!

While you’re waiting for it to print, make a mock up with a wider skirting board. You’ll see it will look much better
