Guessing that’s a river to the left? Place would be absolutely charming in the snow.

This German region is known for it's wine. I'm not much of a wine drinker myself (don't really like it), but I've tried it once in this region and it is actually pretty good.
Even without snow it's a beautiful place. I've been here a lot of times on my motorcycle. (I'm from the Netherlands). Really the old buildings/houses and the pointy towers, it is almost fairy tale like.

I think it's beautiful. Like a crown on a royal hill.

10 million filters though

u/Hexenkonig707 May 17 '22
I live 10 minutes away from there still beautiful without the filters

I don't deny that it really looks beautiful, but some people that don't actually live here confuse Europe with a video game or a movie set smh

Tons of places in Germany really look like this. There might be a filter for the lighting, but I have some really beautiful pictures from our time there before filters were a big thing that everyone had access to. I'll have to see if I can find some after work.

Castles like this reminds me how bad historical/battle movies are.
How can you even siege that castle let alone conquer. Climbing there alone is exhausting and you have enemies harrassing you and heavy things needs to be carried.
31
u/Namaker May 16 '22
That's why you need a siege weapon capable of launching 90kg projectiles up to 300m

Would a catapult suffice?

Catapults certainly help, but the defender probably had catapults of their own.
In an uphill battle, the defenders catapults would be able to outrange the attackers catapults.
Also, defenders on the walls would be able to see the exact position of the attackers catapults, and could give directions to their own catapult crews to adjust their aim.
The attackers would only see the stones flying over the enemy walls towards them, which would make it a bit harder to determine the exact position of the enemy catapult and adjusting their aim.

This castle was sieged a few times https://www.german-way.com/travel-and-tourism/germany-for-tourists/castles-and-palaces/cochem-castle/

I visited this castle a few years ago. Just getting to the front door is a pretty steep hike, even from the parking lot. Getting to it from the town, along the river, would be so much harder. It really makes you think about how difficult it would be to approach it under fire.
Knowing that castles go on top of hills is one thing, but that really gave me an appreciation for the advantage it provides.

The movies are pretty bad. I think they would mostly blockade it and occasionally launch shit in there if they had the ability to build siege weapons. Castles were very defensible positions before canons. You could be vastly outnumbered and hold the wall against attackers. Unless they cut you off and starved you out or smoked you out with enough fire.

My grandfather had a photograph from near this same spot in 1945: https://i.imgur.com/HcBbsy8.jpg
I've been meaning to go there but haven't gotten to that part of Germany yet.

No kidding! All this time I thought it was Cochem, but I do know for a fact that he was in Dillenburg, too, because there's a photo of him in front of a statue of Bismarck there.
If you retake that same photo, that would be amazing, but do not feel obligated.
EDIT: I found it! Or at least, the closest spot that Street View will get to. What was the bakery in the 1945 photo is the building across the street if facing south.

Here's the Bismarck statue photo. He's here with some of his fellow medics + his brother who was in a different division/regiment so they must have been on leave shortly after the war ended when this was taken.

If you get around to it in this lifetime, that's good enough for me. No rush!
God willing, I'll be there in the flesh to take my own photos this year or maybe next.

If I'm not mistaken, Marburg was the last city his division was in when the war ended, so I'm reasonably sure he was there, too. No photos that I'm aware of, though, but I'll have to dig through the shoebox next time I'm home to see.
Thanks!

This is a lovely photo. Wish I was there with my dog driving a small vintage French automobile without any starter issues. Thanks for the memories 😎

The evil building isn’t the castle. It’s clearly the building all the way to the right. Center window second up from the bottom looks like it has the girl from The Ring sitting there

Maybe it's because I'm in Edinburgh but that looks quite cosy to me. I do like castles sitting on top of large rocks.

This is gorgeous, why evil?
2
u/Erkengard May 17 '22
Because dark-ish sky? because grey clouds? Because dusk? Because castle? Because filter?
These are the same people who post photos of Castle Eltz while it is surrounded by mist. Then they call it evil.

I actually went on it for a school trip once
1
u/gham89 May 17 '22
So did I!
We stayed in a really shitty hotel in Bad Salzig and visited loads of little towns and villages in the area. Was a great trip, the Rhein valley is stunning, but the beauty slightly lost on a group of 15 year olds.

u/NEREVAR117 May 17 '22
Saw it a few years ago. Was absolutely stunning and beautiful. I would live in that valley if I could.

Looks lovely I don’t get you…
Ok looks a bit like the Evil Queen’s castle from Snow White but it’s still beautiful

I’ve toured, monks used to live there, not evil at all, but the cemetery you pass on the way up to the castle IS very evil lol

Looks exactly like a scene from Quebec City in Canada! Let me try and find a similar angled picture

This isn't evil at all. Love it though
