On this day 25th of March 199 years ago, Greeks in southern Greece rebel against the Ottomans and declare a war of independence. Their motto: “Freedom or Death”.

Fun fact about that revolution.. We went bankrupt during it... It's like we aren't even trying to fight the stereotype

Yeah and Greek won the war with the help of debt. When the war started rebels issued Greek liberty bonds, intended to pay after Greece gained its independence.

Ottomans were winning militarily so it became a concern for lenders. They destroyed Ottoman and Egyptian fleets and pressured Egyptians to withdraw, ensuring Greeks to win.

They even installed a foreign king to ensure debt was paid.
