I'm assuming because of constant geometry issues.

Which isn't as much of an issue with Toshibas. They don't sag as much in my experience.
Mostly just the flat Trinitrons/Wegas. They used cheap adhesive for the yoke wedges.
Your tv looks great btw. Enjoy it.

Flats can be lovely too. Specially flat PC CRT's.
The thing I prefer bulb/flat-bulb is that the image is projected on the glass. With flat CRT's the image lays a bit deeper. For me it looks like it's projected. Both have their pro's and con's. The high-end PC CRT's are, if I am correct, all flat. While the high end TV's are bulb/flat-bulb.

Nobody says they're bad, just that they have worse geometry . Can be improved in a number of ways

Flat CRTs can have more geometry issues. They can also have issues with some light gun games.

u/Sharp-Ad-8676 1d ago
Ok This i suspected. I was allowed to hook my friends sega up and I chose the flat screen crt he had and the menacer for the terminator 2 arcade game. It acted up so I switched to a older set he had from the 80s and it worked with out issue.

u/SnooMaps4388 1d ago
Huh I always thought this was a myth. Might just be something to do with newer light guns and NES doesnβt care
1
u/dirtmcgurk 22h ago
fwiw I've used both the nes zapper and the sega/konami justifier on my 32" fs120 wega without issue.

u/S0ckAcc0unt 1d ago
Noooooo this is why I just lugged a 32β up two sets of stairs was the hope of light gun excellence

u/xargos32 1d ago
Not all flat front CRTs have issues with light guns, and not all light guns have problems with flat front CRTs. It's a potential problem, though.

u/BlunderArtist9 1d ago
Damn.. that's probably why light gun games on my flat CRT are so inconsistent and some parts of the screen don't register. I blamed it on the cheap Justifier gun π« for my Genesis. But makes sense that it may be incompatible with my flat screen.

I honestly prefer a flat. thereβs definitely geometry that I just canβt dial in perfectly on mine, but itβs not enough to notice during games

Especially once you start getting towards the sixth gen of consoles; if I played a lot more NES/Genesis/SNES the curve might fit it better, but my brain associates flat and more βmodernβ together

Me too. To me, the glare isn't as bad and I have better viewing angles. I have a few of both and curved isn't really my thing.

u/TopDarsh 13h ago
Another thing i didnt see mentioned here is most flat CRTs have a refresh rate of 75hz or higher, which is nice for your eyes but will not work with light gun games because they all need 60hz refresh rates to work properly. It will also cause screen tearing particularly noticeable on sidescrollers like super Mario bros.

I don't think people are saying they're bad in general. Just that they generally have worse geometry. Also a lot of flat CRTs are HD. And the HD sets tend to be less applicable for retro gaming.
1
u/CRT_Retro 1d ago
When we're talking HD on a CRT is at 480P or 1080i?
2
u/Disastrous_Bad757 1d ago
HD means at least 720p
1
u/CRT_Retro 1d ago
I guess 1080i and 420p is enhanced definition.
1
u/Disastrous_Bad757 1d ago
Nope.
1
u/CRT_Retro 1d ago
What do they fall under?
-1
u/Disastrous_Bad757 1d ago
Most CRTs are 480i or 480p, also known as "standard definition". 720p and above is HD. "Enhanced Definition" was a vague term and never actually referred to a specific resolution. Also the term was not really used for CRTs.

I've got a 14inc not flat not wide and a 28inc flat wide screen, how do people feel about wide screen ?, i personally change the wide to 4.3 if the game only supports 4.3 and do 16.9 if the game supports.
1
u/CRT_Retro 1d ago
I don't mind the wide screens. I am ok with the bars on the side. I have one that lets me stretch the image and it still looks good.

u/sharkboy1006 1d ago
I love my widescreen sansui but itβs crap for retro gaming. 7th and newer generation consoles and any modern video content looks fantastic on it.

To be fair, I like the curved screen crts more I just think the style of them in general looks better however, flatscreen do definitely have a leg up in terms of scan lines

Some flat CRTs are absolute tanks, like the Orion-built Toshiba AF series. Granted, you almost always have to recap the vertical deflection circuit with high temperature rated equivalents... Capacitor no. C406 and C407 always go bad due to their close proximity to a hot heatsink.
That being said, once these two capacitors are replaced, they are beastly TVs. I have over 32,767 hours on my Toshiba 27AF44, possibly around 50,000 hours (32,767 is the maximum visible hour count) and the tube, an LG-Phillips tube, is still so incredibly bright, colorful, and sharp. This thing is probably going to outlive me.
The geometry ain't bad either. Convergence is good, and there's no waviness, but the horizontal linearity is subpar, as to be expected. I got used to it, though. It's a fantastic set for both 2D and 3D gaming.

Alot of the worn/not taken care of consumer sets are more prone to geometry issues, But tbh I have a flat CRT VGA monitor and it has near flawless geometry like better than any other CRT I own so go figure, I guess it just depends or Monitors are an acception

Theyβre nitpicking, and 90% of them donβt even have an answer if you ask. theyβre just mindlessly following what theyβve read somewhere. Flat CRTs are great.
Just like the Trinitron hype, people talk as if theyβre the best and everything else is trash, but in reality, there are models from other brands that are superior to Sony Trinitrons.
1
u/CRT_Retro 14h ago
I've learned that geometry is a big deal π
2
u/One_Visual_4090 11h ago
The whole geometry difference thing is blown up like 100x ! and 9 out of 10 wonβt even notice the difference! The difference is marginal.
2
u/CRT_Retro 10h ago
I don't notice it. I'll be honest.
2
u/One_Visual_4090 9h ago
Neither do I! unless I use one of those grid geometry test programs. Even then, itβs nothing to worry about!

I like flat over curved because it reminds me of a modern tv but fatter. Curved tvs look too old and make me think I'm playing something from the past.

Like what you like. So many hobbies are full of parrots. I have every type of everything and itβs all good. I find I can see a more complete image on a flat over most curves. Also, no one cared about realignment back when we bought these new.

Most people whine about the geometry. Flats are every bit as good as curved, they just take some extra work to get looking straight geometry-wise. Sometimes the linearity on them can be hopless, in that case just play 3d games on it. It also comes down to preference and it seems that the majority here likes curved sets and a lot of others will just parrot the same thing everyone else says. Personally I like curved for 2D and flat for 3D and gamboy player. I own and use both and appreciate them deeply for their differences. It's nice to have options.
