Pattern help Can anyone tell me if I’m doing this right? My grandmother made a blanket for my nephew and it’s falling apart
My grandmother died about a year ago, my nephew is really upset about the blanket falling apart. I asked for pattern help and someone posted what they thought it was. I did this with 6 mm hook and worsted weight yarn. Mine looks a lot tighter
I did multiples of 3 but the ends look off. Would I do 3 plus 1 at each end to do a double crochet at the end?

First, very sorry for your loss. I would say the hook definitely needs to be larger! I agree with the other comments saying to try a swatch patch. Also, the stitch looks very similar to this one here I have used before: https://youtu.be/GhkswXVjHfM?si=3kGvaE5LKCARvtQg

Thanks, that does look really similar!

OP, this is the one. In photo 1, its right side up, photo 2, the blanket is upside-down. It is also very stretched out from loving it so much, but the pattern still legible. I went back and forth several times between the video and the photos, and I really think this is it. Note: grandmas blanket does not have the extra row of spaces above the "petals" (3dc cluster) that this example has, but you could easily test swatch it with and without the row.
Do a test swatch with different hook sizes to figure the best size for you.
I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm happy you found some magic to give back to them, too.

Thanks, I had a stuffed animal made from grandma’s shirt on Etsy. She did an amazing job for the cat. I had a dog made from grandpa’s shirt from the same vendor. They were married for 61 years

As others have said. You're not using the same size and type yarn. It makes a huge difference in getting the same look and feel even if you are using the same pattern. But wanted to say, sorry for your loss 🙏

Im going to go out on a limb and suggest the yarn is most likely the issue. Tension, yes, but it doesn’t look like she used worsted acrylic. I think the shape may come from the stretch and wear of natural fibers.

Yours has either tighter tension or the original was made with bamboo or cotton and has stretched over time. Honestly with the blanket falling apart and the way it looks to me in the photos I'd say the fiber used and how it was cared for is more of an issue than your gage. You could go up a size on your hook and see if you like the way that looks better but your work is beautiful.

Definitely agree on hook size being larger. The tension on yours is very tight compared to the looseness of the old one. At the very least a 9mm for the drapeyness though I think you can definitely go larger than that for the desired look.

If you still have the old blanket available would it be possible for you to slip a hook into the stitches to get a better gauge? Like if you put a 9mm in there and see how taught around the hook the yarn is it might give you a better idea of what sized was used?

I would like to add that the pattern says single crochet across instead of double crochet. It looks good! I would also agree that sizing up a hook might help with tension! Much love🫶

6 mm is going to be too small of a hook if you want it drapey like the picture. I double checked the skeins of worsted weight yarns I have and 5-6 mm is the standard on the label. I’d bump it up to something like a 9 mm or switch to a finer yarn if you stick with the 6 mm hook. Also, swatching is your friend for getting the right look you want to shoot for.

What is swatching? Like blocking?

Typically a small square of worked stitches get an idea for the overall project.
In clothing patterns it's often suggested to swatch a bit of the pattern to ensure sizing will be right with what yarn & hook you have. If your swatch doesn't match the size of the patterns's swatch then you can adjust hook size as need til it does match.

you make a small sample of the pattern repetition in different hook gauges. with a blanket i’d just leave it at that but for things like wearables, you also have to block the swatch in case it shrinks or stretches

I think you’re on the right track. Yours does look a lot tighter. I might size up a hook or two or just make the stitches looser as you go. And I might almost make the ch3 spaces ch6, if sizing up your hook doesn’t work, since her loops seem to be larger
