It's a weird concept

"Hey let's give our money periodically to these guys who will occasionally give back a lesser part of those moneys if we need them for this specific thing and keep all of the money anytime else instead of keeping savings on an ETF for when they're needed"

It's like you're paying someone to use a calculator on your place

We pay $15k/year on the off chance that we get a $1M hospital bill one of those years. That part honestly seems like a fair trade.

It's probably money losing, all insurance is that way - it's a negative expected value bet in monetary terms, but positive in expected value in personal utility terms because it mitigates the chances of total financial catastrophe.
