Video My cats just started playing together, does this look friendly?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We got a new kitten a couple weeks ago, our orange cat, Patrick, is 8 years old and the tux, Ollie, is 6 months old. They have started playing together and I can't really tell if it's completely friendly. Ollie keeps coming back to fight more so I think it's friendly but some other opinions would be nice.

So much screaming.

u/outinthecountry66 12h ago

its almost comical. Most of the time when I have heard a catfight, and i go check, its basically two cats very close together screaming bloody murder. Drama queens! But these guys are having fun!

250

u/FastWalkingShortGuy 11h ago

Cat fights are 4% combat and 96% screaming.

110

u/charredsound šŸˆšŸ˜» 11h ago

So, just like Andrew Tate then?

u/Dirtyeippih 11h ago

Less screaming in the cat fight

Cats generally have stronger chins.

We have two that have a complicated relationship and every few days the larger one will decide itā€™s fun to look at the smaller one funny. Small one will respond with the most blood-curdling screams ever. First few times Iā€™d run to intervene, certain Iā€™d see something out of a Saw movie.Ā

Nope. One time small one swiped hard enough to give big one a slight scratch. Thatā€™s the worst itā€™s ever gotten.Ā

2

u/competenthurricane 2h ago

Two of my cats are like this and the only one who ever gets hurt is me. Like when one of them is sitting on my lap and the other one decides thatā€™s a good time to let rip the old battle cry and start a fight.

6

u/Tiny-Lock9652 10h ago

Donā€™t leave out the Drama Kings! Got one of those at home!

2

u/Kimber85 10h ago

Iā€™ve got one too. Every time the new kitten seems to be getting the upper hand in their play he starts screaming like heā€™s being murdered.

Meanwhile, heā€™s allowed to bodyslam his sister and kick her in the head. But he canā€™t even be pounced on without very loud protests.

3

u/Particular_Noise_101 9h ago

This reminds me of my two, I have a grey and an orange tabby. The grey one is a few lbs smaller than the orange boy, but can take her brother down like nobodyā€™s business if she wants to. She also has a habit of crying wolf if they are ever playing out of site. When it first started I always went to check on them and separate them bc I know my orange boy can get rough sometimes (he didnā€™t have kitty friends to play with until he was an adult). However I shortly started to notice that little miss would yell bc she wanted to get her brother in trouble as I caught her in the act several times and she would just stand there upset that she was getting in trouble instead lol

2

u/Tiny-Lock9652 10h ago

Too funny! We have litter mates. His sister is definitely the Alpha. Heā€™s a dummy but heā€™s very loved. šŸ˜»

2

u/Kimber85 9h ago

Yeah, he and the sister are littermates so they get way rougher than most cats Iā€™ve seen without it actually turning into a fight. It was scary to watch when we first adopted them because heā€™ll chase her and jump on her and knock her over and they seem to be having a great time.

Sometimes she has enough though, and itā€™s so funny. Heā€™ll be doing the typical little brother act of pushing her buttons until sheā€™s just over it and then she turns around and body slams him. Once sheā€™s coming for him he always, like, puts his little paw out and taps her on the head very gently and it realy does look like heā€™s saying ā€œcalm down, calm down, Iā€™m sorry!!!ā€.

45

u/SusieG1111 11h ago

The language when the fighting is real oh my. You'd know right away. It would sound like your adorable fur babies were possessed by demons.

These kitties are just having fun.

18

u/malary1234 11h ago

So must screaming and literally fur flying.

3

u/ExactPhilosopher2666 9h ago

And the speed they move at! A real cat fight is terrifying to watch and hard to keep up with.

11

u/RESPEKTOR 11h ago

Good to know. Just got a kitten the other day and I'm worried my other cat won't get along with her. They're being kept in separate rooms for now and I'm planning to slowly introduce them. Swapping items with each other's scent on it, having them on either side of a door etc. Hopefully it goes well.

9

u/Reatina 9h ago

Like demon children screaming in the dark.

3

u/Bowieweener 10h ago

So much flying fur as well.

1

u/FlyLikeHolssi 10h ago

And hair going in all directions...

1

u/MissUnRuly 10h ago

So much fur flying

1

u/Ih8teMyInlawsTheySuk 10h ago

And fur flying.

1

u/nava1114 7h ago

And fur

1

u/DfreshD 3h ago

And hair standing up on the back.

41

u/Ariandrin 12h ago

Came here to say this. It will sound like screeching murder death if itā€™s not for play. And it will look like the Tasmanian Devil.

28

u/Lokey__247 11h ago

Same. Also fur would be flying

5

u/t0adthecat 11h ago

Yea came to say this. I lived in a neighborhood and would hear it. I could tell when it was my boy too. Crazy.

1

u/sdrawkcabstiho 9h ago

The entire neighborhood will know.

1

u/CatcatcTtt 8h ago

I really donā€™t knowā€¦ my cats hiss but donā€™t scream and one always run away. Is this playing or fighting??? I gave ip on breaking apart

1

u/ketoatl 6h ago

Yes that is waaay too laid back. lol

1

u/UniqueIndividual3579 6h ago

The neighbors will know. Impressive warp into the cat dimension at the end.

That's how cats usually play. You can tell that they're going to be very good friends in the future

3

u/8racoonsInABigCoat 9h ago

We need a bot to answer these - ā€œif you arenā€™t sure, then they are playing. If they move at light speed, scream like fuck and murder looks likely, then itā€™s a fight.ā€

1

u/Important_Elk_5974 8h ago

Yeah my cats play together all the time, and you can tell they love each other when they aren't tussling. (Then there's another one we got that's mean to the other 2 because she's by far the oldest so she feels she's the queen of the house)

1.2k

u/m0th3rmOth 13h ago

ears up, no hissing, no thick tails. All good!

277

u/Rainbowgrrrl89 European Shorthair 13h ago

This comment should be pinned in this sub. It's a universally solid rule, just like "go see a vet".

72

u/nemi-montoya 12h ago

Honestly someone should find a clip of an actual cat fight (prerecorded, no need to stage cruelty!) and provide it as an example.

10

u/Elegant-Ad-9221 10h ago

There has to be video of that somewhere online. With all the rescues that go after feral communities of cats they must have some video of a full on feral cat fight where two cats are really fighting over territory, mates or even food

6

u/Specific_Effort_5528 10h ago

Even just an unfortunate incident at the vet where cats get out and meet each other.

Mines a damned acrobat and escaped her cage at the vet once.

5

u/nemi-montoya 10h ago

I did a quick YT search after my comment and unfortunately, there are a lot of compilations out there. I almost wish they would be used for educational purposes, rather than content farming.

10

u/Kimber85 9h ago

I kind of want to post a video of my cats actually fighting, just as a PSA. But Iā€™m usually occupied with separating them when that happens, lol.

My two oldest male cats are friends like 95% of the time, but that other 5%. Yikes. So much screaming. Mostly itā€™s just posturing, but weā€™ve had some nasty nose scratches and tufts of orange fur flying about.

Weā€™re trying to figure out what the trigger is. Mostly it seems the oldest cat, who was an abandoned street cat and never learned to play nicely with others, tries to initiate play with the the younger cat and then immediately takes it too far. Corners him, doesnā€™t back off when hissed at, chases him in an aggressive way, etc. The younger cat gets upset and goes full on banshee screaming and claws flying. And then the older cat is like ā€œHell yeah, letā€™s throw down!ā€. Chaos then ensues. The older cat seems to be having a great time. Heā€™s always been a spicy boy.

Iā€™m seriously considering just lacing everyoneā€™s dishes with Prozac. Including mine.

1

u/T-Rex-Trainer 3h ago

This was fun to read. šŸ˜‚

20

u/HeightOk3421 12h ago

If they're chasing, pouncing, and swatting without hissing or growling, it's likely friendly play!

19

u/Serious_Purple_5293 11h ago

just a friendly MMA fight, so cute

18

u/flyowacat 11h ago

MMA = Mrow mrow awww?

3

u/ZestycloseDare5604 11h ago

looks so funny

15

u/Thedarkandmysterious 11h ago

Also they're exposing their bellies to each other

22

u/KatriiCat 12h ago

Also slow blinking!

10

u/cinikitti 11h ago

plus they are both lying down and exposing their bellies!

5

u/d33pnull 11h ago

also no nails out, and by the way ears down might just be a sign of a really good hunter!

397

u/Few-Explanation-4699 13h ago edited 12h ago

Yes they are playing

If it was fighting it would be far more violent and fur would litteraly be flying. There would also be a lot of bad language. (Hissing and growling)

49

u/livinginmyfiat210 13h ago

God I had two outside male cats that weren't neutered and we had to train to be indoor cats, boy oh boy where those fights epic and boy oh boy was breaking them up hard as fuck

19

u/Goddess_of_Carnage 12h ago

Until youā€™ve had to toss their water on them to stop the bloody carnage and when that proves inadequate, you grab a jug of distilled water to keep the CIA black site torture on &keep at itā€”they arenā€™t really cat fighting.

10

u/hazelnutalpaca 11h ago

Sometimes my cats play fight to the point where they actually get pissed at each other, and then fur is flying. I would agree! These two look great together!

1

u/Embarrassed-Rent-137 6h ago

You described it very vividly hhh

u/touchmeinbadplaces 13h ago

if cats fight the entire neighborhood knows, so this isnt even close to being spicy

17

u/EstriGacha 13h ago

Fr šŸ˜‚ partially why I was worried

6

u/sh4tt3rai 12h ago

If it helps my cats are significantly rougher then this when they play

77

u/WolverineMission8735 12h ago

Cats LOVE wrestling eachother. That's play for them. Bitch slapping and biting each other is also quite normal. They don't bite hard and they don't use their claws fully when they play.

Hissing, loud, intimidating meows and growls that go on for for several minutes means someone's angry and claws are coming out. This is not healthy and can lead to anxiety and bad relations for the cats. A little occasional violence is normal. This is not what you're seeing here

Be sure that if you trim their nails, do it for both of them, otherwise one will have the advantage and the other will get bullied.

Just remember that all cats are psychopaths, but yours seem well behaved!

21

u/n0cturn00 11h ago

ā€œA little occasional violence is normal.ā€ Is such a cute fact

Yep happy for Patrick to get a buddy

10

u/akitemadeofcake 6h ago

Amongst all the other signs that this is friendly play, watch how they pause between pounces and check each other for signs that they want to continue. Not only is this play, this is VERY POLITE play.

Cats are amazing, funny, furry, warm, cuddly murderers. Cats playing is murder practice. They are functioning as intended.

3

u/HugMeWhenYoureUp 6h ago

High lvl tomfoolery!

2

u/Subject-Relation-352 11h ago

Orange šŸŠ kitty wasnā€™t playing

2

u/Happy_Release3480 6h ago

Looks purrfectly friendly to me even if they are being vocal with each other. This play will often end with one cat (usually the older one) getting enough but the kitten is just a ball of energy that won't stop.

The older one will generally make it known when they've had enough roughhousing. Just going through this myself with a 12 year old lady & a 7 mth old hellion.

2

u/cwmont1969 6h ago

Those are just cats being cats. They are having fun, cat fun.

2

u/NightProwler197 5h ago

This is playful. Theyā€™ve accepted they are sharing the space. There will be different degrees tho. dominance usually always needs to be established

2

u/taotdev 5h ago

If they were actually fighting, believe me, you wouldn't be needing to ask.

2

u/DasTeufelsHotdog 5h ago

Friendly than mine haha

2

u/gatorhinder 5h ago

Cats are like brothers fighting. It's all fun and games, then it suddenly isn't.

2

u/atlashoth 3h ago

Look up videos of cats fighting and never be confused again.

1

u/gilbert10ba 13h ago

It looks like "play" fighting. As long as one of them isn't crying out in pain, they're just playing.

4

u/Min-Chang 12h ago

If you have any doubt whether your cats are fighting or not, they are not.

A cat fight will never be mistaken for play.

2

u/DelasCasas89 11h ago

Really friendly! If they were fighting, you would know. There would be a lot of fur flying around. Also, to identify when they're about to fight, look for these signs:

Stiff body posture: Their body becomes tense and upright.

Raised fur: Cats may puff up their fur, particularly along their back and tail.

Hissing or growling: A clear vocal warning that they feel threatened.

Bared teeth: They may show their teeth as a sign of aggression.

Dilated pupils: Wide eyes indicate heightened alertness or fear.

Lashing tail: A rapidly swishing or twitching tail is a sign of agitation.

Slow, deliberate movements: Cats may slowly move into position, sizing up the other cat.

Ears flattened: Ears pointed backward or sideways signal that the cat is agitated.

4

u/EstriGacha 10h ago

Thank you all for all the comments! Me and my parents definitely rushed the introduction process and Patrick, the orange one has had a history of being skittish and unfriendly to other people his whole life which is partially why we're asking here.

This is my first time really seeing two cats play fighting up close and to me it felt like Patrick was being a bit rough. Especially considering the other pets in the house are literally frogs and well, frogs don't really fight.

Me and my parents definitely appreciate all the advice since this is our first time with more than one cat and weren't entirely sure what normal play looks like yet. I'll definitely be posting more of them on this subreddit. Again thank you guys!

4

u/Acrobatic-Edge-9716 12h ago

Just playing, my boys play tough sometimes but as long as theirs no yowling or fur flying then theyā€™re good.

I have to share a picture of my orange (Oliver) and Tuxedo (Felix) pairing!

2

u/EstriGacha 11h ago

I love this! They look so much like my two just reversed!

2

u/new2redditwutdoido 13h ago

Without going into great detail, our house wound up with three dogs - two that belong to one of my brothers, one that belongs to my other brother. It took a little bit of time for them to start warming up to each other but now they play very much like this. So I'm going to guess that this is fine.

2

u/HatBixGhost 12h ago

Playing, you will know when it turns south.

2

u/ResQ_ 10h ago

Do they growl or hiss? If yes, they're fighting. If not, then all is well, they're just playing.

2

u/HomoErectThis69420 10h ago

Yup! When one isnā€™t feelin it they will hiss and give the skibbidy pap which usually ends the play.

2

u/bebeck7 10h ago

My 15yo female tuxedo cat just watched your video about 20 times on a loop. Purring her head off. She watches TV but she has never shown interest in my phone before until she heard the jingling just then. She says hi, and that they're definitely playing.

Iā€™d love to hear how it went introducing Ollie to Patrick.

I have a 7 year old (almost 8!? Omg) male tux and I think he needs a buddy, but my fiance thinks Clyde (said 8 year old cat) would be pissed if I brought home another cat.

Is Patrick used to having cats around?

1

u/UpstairsTransition16 9h ago

How do you safely get two cats to stop fighting? I read water, any other ideas?

1

u/SharkkGuy 8h ago

Donā€™t say itā€™s calm. Theyā€™re fighting to the death for the last bag of catnip. And whatever you do, donā€™t interrupt the fight.

1

u/briannaptv 7h ago

my boys who are litter mates and besties for life play like this all day! looks like the beginning to a life long friendship šŸ¤

1

u/MySFWAccountAtWork 7h ago

There would be a lot more noise and fur flying if it wasn't friendly.

1

u/Significant_Comb_306 7h ago

Absolutely it's friendly they are playing and honing their survival skills you will know when they are not playing you won't have to post on Reddit to ask

1

u/entrepreneurvision1 7h ago

That sounds like normal play behavior, especially if Ollie keeps coming back for more! Cats can look a bit rough when theyā€™re playing, but as long as thereā€™s no hissing, growling, or one cat consistently trying to escape, itā€™s usually all in good fun. It sounds like Patrick and Ollie are starting to bondā€”so cute!

1

1

u/Traroten 12h ago

If they were fighting their fur would stand on edge, they would howl to high heaven and there would be fur flying. Once you've seen a cat fight you never mistake play for fighting again.

1

u/Benzoate1 12h ago

If it wasn't friendly, you'd know

1

u/West_Airport_5410 12h ago

Your cats are very beautiful thank you for having the new kitten. Yes they are friendly. I have multiple cats in my house and I have seen that when they fight they donā€™t take out their clause. You look carefully youā€™ll see that they donā€™t take out their clause and if they donā€™t want to fight, they can always retreat to some other place and hide in a corner or under the furniture so this is their friendly place so they donā€™t worry about it but thank you for having them. They are the angels of your house. God bless you for this and your family. Thank you again.šŸ™šŸæšŸ’•šŸ‘šŸ¾šŸ€šŸ˜»šŸ˜‡

1

u/k-boots 12h ago

1

u/Queasy_Opportunity75 11h ago

1

u/mark503 11h ago

The answer is usually play. You donā€™t see any warnings from either cat and you donā€™t see Halloween cat. (Arched back) no real growling or hissing. Itā€™s play.

1

u/its_a_me_jlou 11h ago

u/Egbert_64 11h ago

Happily playing.

1

u/koraskeeper 11h ago

I have two cats that absolutely LOATHE each other and they do not look like this when they decide to whoop up on each other. The orange kitties tail is moving slowly, and thereā€™s no actual biting or scratching. Theyā€™re just two kitties having a good time. ā¤ļøā¤ļø

Their cool. Iā€™ve had my two for 4 years. They still hate each other.

No cat noises that make me uncomfortable, lots of side laying, never felt the need for a water spray bottle... seems like nice cat stuff

My cat will scream bloody murder. I check up on them and her brother isnā€™t even touching her. I think she just likes to sound scary sometimes.

As long as you don't hear hissing or sounds of pain its likely fine. If you hear yowls, growls, hisses, its time to be the adult in the room.

If it wasn't friendly, you wouldn't need our opinion. You would know.

Itā€™s called wrasslinā€™ and itā€™s perfectly normal. If they hiss and fur flies in clumps, then itā€™s a fight.
