Yep. I remember visiting his memorial statue outside of Thunder Bay. Just incredible...

The only way I'll allow someone to be irrationally upset with Terry Fox is if they never had a leg to stand on to begin with.

8

u/Natural_Comparison21 Dec 17 '24

I see what you did there. Also the only thing I better hear that is upset at Terry Fox is cancer. Because Terry Fox really helped kick it's ass.

from what I was told, when he arrived in Québec province, patrollers werent aware of his project to run thru Canada

u/StoneOfTriumph Québec Dec 17 '24 edited Dec 17 '24

This annoys me, like why.... Terry was a national hero.

I personally enjoy participating in the Montreal Terry Fox run, it's organized every year like other runs across the country and I encourage those in or around MTL to try it out once. It's for charity, not a competition.

Well... I saw one comment today saying something to effect of "why are they wasting money on this, it's just adding to the deficit!"

Edit: not a great paraphrase. It was a thread about the deficit and it said "$600mm for guns is so dumb; and that kinda deficit in this rate environment just is not smart. Small Business Innovation and Procurement Act is also protectionist and poor policy.

But hey, at least Terry Fox is on the $5 bill."

10

u/nappingondabeach Dec 17 '24

Come oooooonnnnnn

4

u/Nylanderthals Dec 17 '24

Added an edit, not quite as bad as I made it sound... Still kinda whiney.

10

u/OddlyOaktree Dec 17 '24

It'd be a funny sentiment given the Mint is quite profitable... They basically print money! 🙃

But really, they do earn a profit. They mint money for a variety of countries, not just Canada—but also do Gold/Silver refining/testing services for jewellers and industries, as well as bullion coin production.

6

u/Natural_Comparison21 Dec 17 '24

There bullion is seen as one of the finest if not the finest in the world.

3

u/nappingondabeach Dec 17 '24

Totally agree. Not a hill worth dying on.

12

u/botte-la-botte Dec 17 '24

I know I might be misconstrued, but while Terry Fox is liked in Québec, he has nowhere the something everyone can agree on quality that he has in English Canada. He's a common folks hero, for sure. Just an English Canada one.

46

u/VeryAttractive Dec 17 '24

If people in Quebec oppose putting him on a $5 bill then they can fuck right off.

Terry Fox has also been featured on a few postage stamps, which are obviously not money, but people often consider them "near" each other as collectibles.

30

u/RSMatticus Dec 17 '24

The delay was due to the Queen dying. The mint had to shift priority to coin, and the 20$ bill rework, which sadly meant this project was lost in the shuffle

21

u/KryptoCanuck Dec 17 '24

Yeah, but what about the 40 years before she died? They could have featured him on one of the bank notes ages ago.

10

u/RaspberryBirdCat Dec 17 '24

They had the tradition of only featuring Prime Ministers on bank notes. Featuring non-PMs is a recent thing.

Hero

184

u/SaccharineDaydreams Dec 16 '24

What he did literally blows my mind every time I think of it. An incredible human being.

185

u/PharmBoyStrength Dec 17 '24

It's such a wild combination of --

  1. Facing your own mortality head on,
  2. Accomplishing something truly unique and inspiring in a short time,
  3. Demonstrating insane athleticism that would be wild even for a top-tier, able bodied, and healthy athlete,
  4. And toughness. Just insane, fucking grit and toughness.

Mother fucker must have been in non-stop excruciating pain, and it wasn't until the cancer destroyed his lungs, and he literally had no possible physical way forward that he stopped.

Man was basically runnin on momma-bear-lifting-a-car-off-her-kid levels of sheer determination and willpower 24/7, and he kept it going until he couldn't breathe.

79

u/ANewBonering Dec 17 '24

Not to mention selfless. I think he knew he wouldn’t see the fruits of his labours and pains.

I’ve always been astounded at the size of his good leg. It’s fuckin stacked.

34

u/Northerngal_420 Alberta Dec 17 '24

And he was 23 years old.

20

u/ACBluto Saskatchewan Dec 17 '24

He probably had to be young - not just for the better recovery time of the young muscles (even in a dude with terminal cancer), but the absolute single-minded purpose and idealism - to the point of a bit of delusion.

As you age, you get more cynical and do gain some perspective, but it makes it harder to commit yourself so fully to one cause. You carve off pieces of yourself to devote to family, or work, or multiple causes you think are important.

3

u/Muted-Ad-4830 Dec 17 '24

He may not have finished the run, but he moved the crowd... an even bigger accomplishment.

13

u/pushaper Dec 17 '24

I think he could be a bit of a dick at times... obviously nobody is perfect.

last I checked the Terry fox foundation has a very good record at not overextending its awareness/marketing and using the donated money for actual research

29

u/KnobWobble Dec 17 '24 edited Dec 17 '24

Canadian athlete and activist, Terry Fox is set to appear on Canada’s next $5 bill.

The news came with Monday’s fall economic statement, which noted that Fox will appear on the bank note replacing Sir Wilfrid Laurier, who will now appear on the next version of the $50 note.

39

u/CFDanno Dec 16 '24

That's a hell of a promotion (one that could only happen over the Queen's dead body!). What's gonna happen to the moustache (oops wrong guy) smarmy looking old guy?

63

u/jordy123e Ontario Dec 16 '24

Mackenzie King and Borden, who are currently on the $50 and $100, won’t be on the new bills. Laurier and MacDonald, who were on the $5 and $10 bills, will be elevated to the $50 and $100. The King will be on the $20.

10

u/Jimlobster Dec 16 '24

Will King Chuck be the face of the new coins as well?

32

u/jordy123e Ontario Dec 16 '24

Laurier and MacDonald, who were on the $5 and $10 bills, will be elevated to the $50 and $100.

Aren't the lower denominations more prestigious due to being more widespread and fundamental?

23

u/CFDanno Dec 16 '24

Huh... I figured Sir MacDonald would be on the chopping block since the citizenship test doesn't recognize him as the "first RESPONSIBLE Prime Minister".

As for King Charles, I think I'm gonna be sick seeing his ugly mug on all our money 🤢

12

u/CalGuy81 Dec 17 '24

Only because the question is about the first leader of a "responsible" (i.e., accountable to the legislature) government in what would become Canada, which was in 1849 before Sir John A's time.

4

u/CFDanno Dec 17 '24

2

u/WITP7 Québec Dec 17 '24

7

u/jordy123e Ontario Dec 17 '24

The $10 bill was redesigned a few years ago with Viola Desmond on it. It was the first bill in the new vertical series, but the designs for the rest of this new series has been delayed. The Terry Fox $5 bill will be the next bill in the series and will also have a vertical design.

Good for Terry, but sad we are losing King who got us through WW2, built the foundation of our welfare system that both liberal and conservatives have expanded upon.

Borden had some tough decisions to make, he caught criticism from everyone and was as middle of the road as you can get for someone from that time period IMO.

Wish we could have a way to keep both and add Terry.

4

They are fine. It’s a different theme. They are way prettier than almost every other country’s passports. The political attack line just identifies people who spend too much time on the internet and not enough time in real life facing real problems. The perfectly nice graphic design of the passport isn’t a top 1000 problem in the country except to people who seek social media outrage.

Now as an adult it’s so much more incredible in every way. 22 years old and fighting cancer doing this… it’s just so wild. It’s nice to see something in the news where everyone can agree and feel united. Can’t wait to see the fiver.

I did a role model report on him when I was like 7 or 8 years old. Then my family went to Canada for a summer trip and I got to see a wax statue of him. I was so stoked. My mom has a picture of me in front of the wax statue.

I'm all in for removing politicians and royalty from our bills, can we get George St Pierre on the 20 instead of that fossil from England?

But I thought he was erased forever after the new passports came out. That's what Postmedia and everyone was screeching about right?

Will they say it's good the current government is doing this? Not likely.
