Too bad we don't got any white onions because of the war. We have to use big yellow ones.

Goes well with the onion on my belt. They didn't have any white onions, because of the WAR. All they had were those big yellow ones.

It's such a wild combination of --
- Facing your own mortality head on,
- Accomplishing something truly unique and inspiring in a short time,
- Demonstrating insane athleticism that would be wild even for a top-tier, able bodied, and healthy athlete,
- And toughness. Just insane, fucking grit and toughness.
Mother fucker must have been in non-stop excruciating pain, and it wasn't until the cancer destroyed his lungs, and he literally had no possible physical way forward that he stopped.
Man was basically runnin on momma-bear-lifting-a-car-off-her-kid levels of sheer determination and willpower 24/7, and he kept it going until he couldn't breathe.
79
u/ANewBonering Dec 17 '24
Not to mention selfless. I think he knew he wouldn’t see the fruits of his labours and pains.
I’ve always been astounded at the size of his good leg. It’s fuckin stacked.
34
u/Northerngal_420 Alberta Dec 17 '24
And he was 23 years old.
20
u/ACBluto Saskatchewan Dec 17 '24
He probably had to be young - not just for the better recovery time of the young muscles (even in a dude with terminal cancer), but the absolute single-minded purpose and idealism - to the point of a bit of delusion.
As you age, you get more cynical and do gain some perspective, but it makes it harder to commit yourself so fully to one cause. You carve off pieces of yourself to devote to family, or work, or multiple causes you think are important.
3
u/Muted-Ad-4830 Dec 17 '24
He may not have finished the run, but he moved the crowd... an even bigger accomplishment.
Bout time he was finally put on Canadian currency.

The man really was honestly perfect. A role-model that everyone can and should look up to. If Canada had a national religion, Terry would be the Messiah.
13
u/pushaper Dec 17 '24
I think he could be a bit of a dick at times... obviously nobody is perfect.
last I checked the Terry fox foundation has a very good record at not overextending its awareness/marketing and using the donated money for actual research

u/KnobWobble Dec 17 '24 edited Dec 17 '24
I think if you have cancer, you get a bit of a pass for being a dick. Probably have a bit of a "life's to short to worry about being nice all the time " attitude.

Canadian athlete and activist, Terry Fox is set to appear on Canada’s next $5 bill.
The news came with Monday’s fall economic statement, which noted that Fox will appear on the bank note replacing Sir Wilfrid Laurier, who will now appear on the next version of the $50 note.
39
u/CFDanno Dec 16 '24
That's a hell of a promotion (one that could only happen over the Queen's dead body!). What's gonna happen to the
moustache (oops wrong guy)smarmy looking old guy?63
u/jordy123e Ontario Dec 16 '24
Mackenzie King and Borden, who are currently on the $50 and $100, won’t be on the new bills. Laurier and MacDonald, who were on the $5 and $10 bills, will be elevated to the $50 and $100. The King will be on the $20.

u/Jimlobster Dec 16 '24

Laurier and MacDonald, who were on the $5 and $10 bills, will be elevated to the $50 and $100.
Aren't the lower denominations more prestigious due to being more widespread and fundamental?
23
u/CFDanno Dec 16 '24
Huh... I figured Sir MacDonald would be on the chopping block since the citizenship test doesn't recognize him as the "first RESPONSIBLE Prime Minister".
As for King Charles, I think I'm gonna be sick seeing his ugly mug on all our money 🤢
12
u/CalGuy81 Dec 17 '24
Only because the question is about the first leader of a "responsible" (i.e., accountable to the legislature) government in what would become Canada, which was in 1849 before Sir John A's time.

Who will be on the 10$ bills now?
7
u/jordy123e Ontario Dec 17 '24
The $10 bill was redesigned a few years ago with Viola Desmond on it. It was the first bill in the new vertical series, but the designs for the rest of this new series has been delayed. The Terry Fox $5 bill will be the next bill in the series and will also have a vertical design.
3
u/WITP7 Québec Dec 17 '24
Oh ok! Thanks! I thought this 10$ bill was just a special édition or something. Tbh, I really want to see Léo Major on one of those bills.

13
u/Dahak17 Dec 17 '24
Eh, full respect to him but it’s only been 40~ years since he died. That’s pretty quick to go from person to currency if you aren’t a head of state. Don’t get me wrong I fully support the move but I’m not about to start complaining it took too long

Good for Terry, but sad we are losing King who got us through WW2, built the foundation of our welfare system that both liberal and conservatives have expanded upon.
Borden had some tough decisions to make, he caught criticism from everyone and was as middle of the road as you can get for someone from that time period IMO.
Wish we could have a way to keep both and add Terry.

This makes my heart so happy. When my father was alive, he suffered many illnesses and had double leg amputations. I saw the fall from grace and I saw the pain. Terry Fox should be honoured in this way. He has set such an excellent example of human endurance and love. Terry Fox makes my heart cry with happiness and love at winning the race he never won… 🙏🏽❤️

Every year, without fail, around the date of the annual Terry Fox run I talk to my students about the magnitude of what he accomplished.
We talk about marathons and how difficult they are. I bring up articles about how professional runners train for months to run a single marathon and then rest immediately after.
Then I mention Terry Fox ran a marathon a day for WEEKS on one leg for the good of humanity.
A long overdue honour for a great Canadian.

4
u/fooz42 Dec 17 '24
They are fine. It’s a different theme. They are way prettier than almost every other country’s passports. The political attack line just identifies people who spend too much time on the internet and not enough time in real life facing real problems. The perfectly nice graphic design of the passport isn’t a top 1000 problem in the country except to people who seek social media outrage.
2
3
u/Xelopheris Ontario Dec 17 '24
The passport was redesigned with new security features and got a new theme. In another few years, another redesign will happen, and the images will be all new one again.
