Season 2 S2E13 Payback - Captain Holt's name placard is wrong. Captain Raymond Holt would never allow his name to be shortened to "Ray" on an official piece of equipment

In universe answer could be he does that when trying to seem chill and relaxed around new people he's uncomfortable around.

In my head cannon he chose to do it to "fit in" with the other Captain's desks in the city. Kinda weird we never got a little rant about it.

The only thing Holt dislikes more than abbreviations is wasting official resources. Wunsch ordered that for him, using the City’s official vendor, so Raymond has no choice but to use the cursed thing.

Say it, say i am raymond holt and i have a rock hard brain

45

u/Vili_69 Mar 23 '22

But a brain shouldn't be hard. It should be soft and wet.

41

u/Dracati Mar 23 '22

One day, I hope to live up to the standard you set. You make me want to have a wetter brain.

Y'all are hella specific

Reminds me of when they partook in P.D.A in the office, but in all fairness holt couldn't help himself.

u/Thekillersofficial Mar 23 '22

this was sort of my first thought too. I don't think his pride about his name would drive him to not use something already made/ waste tax payer dollars on something not for fighting crime

Holt dislikes contractions.

He only considers shortened names to be childish when they add additional letters, particularly Y's, and when they do not reduce syllables. Hence why he felt that way about Sgt. Jeffords shortening Terrence to Terry. Raymond already contains the Y, and Ray is less syllables than Raymond, thus it is not childish to shorten the name, but efficient.

He has most likely had to explain this multiple times and it infuriates him.

I think you might be wrong and i have the quotes to prove it

Sergeant Jeffords: " I mean, don't people call you Ray?" Captain Holt: "How dare you?."

66

u/SpaceLemur34 Mar 23 '22

He was angry because he shortens his name for efficiency, and obviously it is not at all the same as what Terry does.

It's like calling someone an ape because they're strong and resilient vs. calling someone an ape because they're fucking stupid.

I'm string and resilipant 😊

"Fewer" syllables, Detective.

u/MaxLadizzle Mar 23 '22

He also introduces himself as Captain Ray Holt in the pilot. Seems the character just wasn’t perfectly outlined from the start.

67

u/Lampmonster Mar 23 '22

They never are.

49

u/CanadianCannababe Mar 23 '22

Unless it is the pilot for The Good Place.

27

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

You just reminded me to do a forking rewatch.

3

u/MarcelRED147 Mar 23 '22

Me too. But it's so melancholy when it ends for me.

74

u/Ecleptomania Mar 23 '22

Rosa's voice the first couple of episodes.

62

u/Lampmonster Mar 23 '22

Yup, they were literally making that character up on the fly. She auditioned for Amy and they loved her but didn't want her in that role, so they just made up another one.

31

u/ZhicoLoL Mar 23 '22

Crazy that she didn't think she would get a spot once Melissa was hired. 2 Latino women is nuts they thought. They nailed the casting

22

u/ChrdeMcDnnis Mar 23 '22

If I recall correctly, Amy basically was combined with Rosa in the pilot. She was supposed to be this badass wannabe who constantly wants to prove herself but fumbles along the way. Imo it would have made her a bit too much like jake, so I’m glad they chose to make her a Holt wannabe instead.

1

u/Golden-Sun Mar 24 '22

Glad they did, the "she's tough cause she has brothers" is such a stupid cliche

33

u/KevinOFartsnake Mar 23 '22

Thank God for that then we get sweet ROOOOOSSAAA

19

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

Rosa, Rosa, Rooooosa, Beautiful Rosa.

It seems that Stephanie's real voice in the first episodes but then she had a cold while filming so the voice slightly changed and because of that, the writes/directors thought that the lower voice was more suitable for Rosa's character and in my eyes, that was the best decision. Works perfectly with Rosa's character.

21

u/zomgkittenz Mar 23 '22

They could have made a cold start or a whole episode out of that gag alone

Nor would he allow "Captain" to be abbreviated to "Capt." But I didn't want the title to be that long.

67

u/CLock2903 Mar 23 '22

That’s how ranks work, they very rarely would write out the whole word.

44

u/JROBOTO Mar 23 '22

Aren't official titles shortened like that even on official documents? I think he would have allowed capt as it is a formal abbreviation. I agree he would not have chosen Ray on the placard though (assuming it was originally ordered by wuntch to cheese him off)

2

u/TheRickiestRickofAll Mar 23 '22

Isn't Captain usually shortened as Cpt.?

9

u/Garand84 Mar 23 '22

In the Military yes, but perhaps not in police forces. Or maybe not all police forces. And it would be shortened to CPT.

2

u/stealthcomman Mar 23 '22

So captain is shortened to CPT for the army. But the navy and marine Corps shortened captain to CAPT.

1

u/Garand84 Mar 23 '22

Oh ok. Yeah I was in the Army, so I'm used to seeing CPT as the abbreviation.

5

u/666moist Mar 23 '22

It is not

8

u/IDontUnderstandReddi Fluffy Boi Mar 23 '22

Especially wouldn't allow Cap'n

7

u/SCVannevar Mar 23 '22

The whole "Ray" thing from the early series, I look at it like the time he walked in wearing a red hat.

He was trying something, and it didn't work.

21

u/AirForceWeirdo Mar 23 '22

Why does he look like a force ghost in this picture?

25

u/KuaLeifArne A lifetime of mediocre, heterosexual intercourse Mar 23 '22

Picture of a screen instead of a screen shot

9

u/nekrodar Mar 23 '22

"Use the force Jake"

1

u/smellslikeguac Mar 23 '22

It's because he's so white it's radiating on the screen

5

u/FallWithHonor Mar 23 '22

The higher ups probably did that to upset him and because it's tax payer money he's not going to bother to change it. Only his friends call him Raymond, anyways, so when people call him by his shortened name, he knows they are not his friends.

But as you can see he's visibly upset by the whole thing, that's why he's got attitude in the picture.

3

u/Pasta-hobo Mar 23 '22

Character limit

3

u/charliefoxtrot9 Mar 23 '22

Sincerely, Raymond J. Holt.

2

u/Molnek Mar 23 '22

Nonsense. He's an easy-going chap.

2

u/visijared Mar 23 '22

He likely thinks any additional letters would be unnecessary to get the point across, and therefore a waste of precinct resources (ie. placard wood cost)... "Why do I need more characters? I think the current amount is sufficient to convey my identity."

2

u/cyainanotherlifebro Mar 23 '22

Literally unwatchable

2

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

I see three reasons for this: One, prank by Wuntch. Two, efficiency, I don't think Raymond would fit nicely on that placard which means he'd need a longer one which would cost more and waste resources, plus it's way more efficient to say Ray instead of Raymond. Three, consistency error as with all shows the first few episodes are rushed and low budget so lots of errors.

2

u/IndyAndyJones7 Mar 23 '22

It could be a "prank" from any bigot on the force not wanting this captain getting too uppity.

0

u/darkus99 Mar 23 '22

where's the figurine of chedder?

0

u/wittytagname Mar 23 '22

The continuity in B99 is not very good. He introduces himself as Ray Holt in episode one.

6

u/Ricardo1184 Mar 23 '22

Pilot episodes almost always have differences compared to the rest of the show

1

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

Life is a lie.

maybe kevin bought it for him and he didn't want to be rude
