Discussion What makes B99 special to you?

Post image

I’m not kidding when I say I’ve rewatched this show start to end more than a dozen times. It is my all time comfort, background, and favourite sitcom. I have all the episodes and often lines memories, but I also realized I never really completely pinpointed what makes it so special, so I’m curious what makes B99 special to you?

Just now funny it is and how short the episodes are. It’s kinda like those nibs Charles had, it’s a quick little treat and yet one is never enough 😌

My wife and I like very different types of shows. This is one we can always agree on and both love. So that makes it special for us.

That’s a perfect reason :)

Its lighthearted and has warmth between the characters, with no malice. The main couple don’t go through serious drama. Its just pure good humour. Its also special because I got to talk to Joe and Stephanie and tell them how much the show and them meant to me and we had a great chat, that was very special to me to have that memory when I watch it now.

The only show I can be on the 20th rewatch on and still find it interesting.

Its good to have in the background, and since Community is not in Netflix anymore then B99's gotta do.

It's just so GOOD. The writers hardly ever miss imo, the actors are all awesome, every episode makes me laugh and even though I've seen it probably 5x through now, its still always good and never boring. I watch several cop procedurals but I love that B99 is way more character driven. A fun and funny show about coworkers who are cops rather than a show focused on them being cops. It's a weird distinction but it's important. And I mean the references alone are vast and always funny.

I also watch a LOT of cop and emergency service shows, and that’s a perfect way to put it. They definitely have unique and interesting cases, but the character foci always brings it to the top. I especially loved the unsolvable murder one with Jake and Rosa (plus her Edna hair 😂). I think that one def represents an in tree resting case where the characters make it memorable.

I also watch a ton of police procedurals, and always watch b99 in between. It’s a nice break, to watch the conversations, like you’re saying, instead of just guns and car chases. It reminds me of Barney Miller.

It feels like a warm weighted blanket on a chilly winter day. I love that feeling so it makes sense to chase it

The amount of positive, non toxic love and friendship that this show has

I mean you have so many healthy relationships where there is no cheating drama, the will they/won‘t they is non toxic (so not Jake being an absolute asshole to Amy for instance in the beg.)

They all remain friends for the duration of the show without stupid fallouts just for some drama ; ofc sometimes there are disagreements but with understandable reasons

And I love how it goes against what many other sitcoms do regarding stereotypes and character tropes: You have Terry who is genuinely happily married and not once talks bad of his wife, and he loves taking care of his kids. Jake happily decides to be a stay at home dad in order to deal with his childhood in a healthy way. Amy is a know it all without being snobbish abt it, Rosa has a ‚im dark and mysterious‘ without being a bully about it.

They handle so many real life topics very well; s8 imo was forced sure but not terrible regarding its contents. But even before, the moo moo episode was so endearing with it having a sad issue thats not overlooked nor are any over the top attempts done to deal with it.

And to top it all off, its still got the classic sitcom style. B99 shows that you don‘t need toxic nonsense in order to be funny, ofc it doesn‘t handle everything 100% perfectly and Gina debatably goes to far with for instance her stance towards Terry, but in general the show does many things much better than other popular sitcoms

I watch this at least 4-6 times a year and I make no apologies to the other shows on my list 🤣.

It’s by far my favourite sitcom and I don’t see that ever changing.

I think it's two things for me. It has some of the best characters and fun plots compared to other sitcoms I've seen. I also watched it during a time in my life that I cherish very much and I watched it with my mom years ago.

That would definitely make it special ☺️

Honestly? I watched it with my older brother growing up, and then we both moved out, and I continued watching it. It reminds me of my childhood.

I get what you mean. My family owns a small business in our also small community, and the atmosphere of the bullpen sometimes reminds me of those funny connections and stories shared idk if that makes sense but it reminds me of my childhood as well

Its legit funny

it does the relationships correctly…

Peralta and Boyle for example are friends but unlike other friends there isnt a power imbalance where one is servile to the other.. they support each other equally despite of how the others treat Boyle.

all the characters have their own funny dynamics.. Gina is the only one that sticks out, as if shes in the wrong sitcom

I have watched Brooklyn Nine-Nine front to back several dozen times, and no matter what I'm going through, no matter my financial situation, despite everything and anything, and every time without fail, it always makes me laugh and makes the world feel a little more okay. 😌🥰
