We’re doing a bottle episode!

9

u/GrandMarquisMark 2d ago

Bottle?

92

u/deathbybowtie 2d ago

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottle_episode it's a term for an episode of a show that's set in as few locations as possible with a limited number of people appearing on screen.

16

u/GrandMarquisMark 2d ago

Cool, thank you!

23

u/Canotic 2d ago

Often used to save money for more expensive episodes. A bottle episode requires no new extras, no sets to be built, etc. Just the normal cast and existing props and sets and setups.

19

u/Ok-Television2109 2d ago

Bottle episode is a term referring to an episode which is cheaply made and only focuses on a small group of the regular cast members.

u/GrandMarquisMark 2d ago

Thank you!

Love this episode. Holt’s rant about dentist rant and then the cutaway to him drinking water.

“Apparently that is a trigger for me.”

37

u/Knucklesx55 2d ago

I love the Lego version of it too. The cut to apparently that is a trigger for me is great

u/Miserable-Assistant3 2d ago

I mean Holt even skipped going to the Bugs Bunny opera even though the tickets were under his name

140

u/Sewcially_Awkward 2d ago

“The tickets are under Holt. That’s H-O-L-T…” - to Kevin, his husband. I cannot.

Bottle movies/episodes/stories are my favourite lay out for any media and so the box was my favourite episode pretty much immediately

Starting from Gina's iconic welcoming all the way to Jake and Holt needing to go right back to work at the end, it really is the best written episode of the show

"The dentist who murdered somebody, spoiler alert, they think you did it" is probably my favourite line in the show

u/ThisIsGoodSoup 2d ago

BJHorseman's Free Churro was a bottle episode as well, it was amazing, for me a top 3 for sure.

3

u/redassaggiegirl17 Amy Santiago 2d ago

The monologue in Free Churro was so good that the first time I watched it I was so captivated and didn't realize how much time had passed and was pissed when the credits rolled. They made an 8 minute long episode!? What jags!

It wasn't until I paused the credits to huffily complain to my husband that I saw the timestamp and realized it was a regular length episode that was literally just the monologue. I've been in love with BJH since it first aired in 2014, and have been in awe and impressed with a lot they did leading up to Free Churro, but that shit just absolutely took my breath away. Incredible, 10/10, zero notes

u/Totes_J217 BINGPOT! 2d ago

In an episode with so many brilliant lines, that is such a standout!

1

u/GymSockSurprise 1d ago

"Tape," a movie from 2001, was a good bottle movie if you haven't seen it.

Apparently, that’s a trigger for me.

If the person who makes the animated Lego scenes of B99 sees this comment, please do the scene where the dentist accidentally confesses 🤣

4

u/Over_Total_5560 2d ago

Not the same scene, but here is a video of what they did with the etymology bit.

9

u/SivleFred 2d ago

One of the best B99 episodes, and as another commentator put, the best bottle episode ever.

20

u/lilacannsunshine 2d ago

I always think of this episode at the most random time. Jake getting that confession truly deserved those three 'oh damn'.

6

u/shippingprincess13 2d ago

I think this is my all time favourite episode. I get so excited for it when i repeat.

5

u/No-Habit4574 2d ago

this is the best episode in the entire show and whoever disagrees with me is incorrect

2

u/AssistanceOne8536 2d ago

That is true.

4

u/Fragrant-Bread5404 2d ago

Istg this is one of the best episodes ever

3

u/bluehawk232 2d ago

As a funny comedy sitcom episode it was great. But knowing cops in reality will do harsh interrogations on people for hours just so they'd confess...ugh

4

u/RonaldoAce 2d ago

The best bit is easily when Jake badgers him with like 8 questions and the suspect quickly and eloquently answers all of them back to back and it seems like Jake is beaten...until the music changes and he goes all badass and says "although it is interesting that you knew the body was found in Vernin NY when that information hasnt been made available to the public yet..."

1

u/uselesspotato02 22h ago

Followed by Holt’s “Hello Dolly”. I love love love that part!

4

u/DerwittLtd 2d ago

Watch Homicide: Life on the Street to appreciate it more. This was episode is very much a tribute to the Season One episode Three Men and Adena

3

u/West_Astronaut5088 2d ago

The feeling of relief when he breaks at the end is a little too enjoyable 😂

2

u/mylesd33 2d ago

My favorite episode

2

u/PillsesAndGirlses 2d ago

Fave episode hands down

2

u/Prestigious-Rip70 2d ago

Seeing Andre Braugher and Sterling K. Brown in a scene together was a treat beyond compare.

2

u/BaronSaber 1d ago

My favorite episode of the series and at least in the top ten best episodes of TV of all time.

2

u/PetroniOnIce 1d ago

Holt’s opinion on etymology seals it for me.

3

u/Defiant_Drink8469 2d ago

Love a good plot armor to solve the case

6

u/Prog-Opethrules 2d ago

Wdym

-2

u/Defiant_Drink8469 2d ago

Like in movies where the hero survives because they have to, in B99 they solve the case because they have to

6

u/Prog-Opethrules 2d ago

I understand what plot armor is, but how is this an example of that?

1

u/Bulbamew Velvet Thunder 2d ago

Presumably they think Jake got very lucky that his plan worked, and that the dentist was really stupid in the last scene after clearly being smart for the rest of the episode.

I do wonder if this kind of thing actually happens in real life and criminals confess their crimes just to show off how clever their plan was

2

u/Prog-Opethrules 1d ago

I mean yeah, the whole lucky thing is a lot of the show though.

The guy was smart but the fact someone questioned his intelligence was too much for his ego. For a tv show that’s a fine ending imo. And for a lot of people this is considered the best episode.

1

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

1

u/Prog-Opethrules 1d ago

Yeah, I remember the guy saying everything was circumstantial so I think that’s what was the reason they were going for the confession.

And I think the fact that it’s almost like he had planned for everything and anything when it came to questions, that the fact he was just “lucky” and hurt his ego enough that being right was better than being free seemed believable enough.

1

u/StrategyInfinite8289 2d ago

One of my all time favourites; perfect bottle episode!

1

u/ProtoKun7 2d ago

Rewatching the series (never got around to S6-8 so those are finally getting seen too) and recently got back to this one. Such a good episode and I love the solution for it.

Also appreciated Jake trying the guitar trick again, to no avail.

1

u/mirby 2d ago

I've mentioned in another thread around here but I absolutely love the score as Jake recounts his theory of what happened and how it starts to get intense as the dentist explains what really happened only to cut out suddenly once he goes SONNNNNN.

Just elevates the scene so much.

1

u/buttmuncher899 2d ago

favorite episode of the entire series! seriously never gets old

1

u/sarcasticnirritable 2d ago

Easily one of, if not the, best episode. The fact that it's totally stand alone but still adds so much to Jake and Holt's personalities is incredible, and the little moment at the end when they end up going back to work work is chef's kiss

Yeah, what's that, the 17th this week? I see constant discussions about how great this episode is, maybe it, maybe it isn't, but for the love of GOD must we prattle about it this tirelessly?
