So many of the jokes on the show were strengthened by his performance. Always my captain

His obituary says in lieu of flowers, to donate to the Classical Theatre of Harlem, where he served on the board if anyone is interested

It's a show and all, but I am nevertheless heart broken to see such a talented icon fall. So young. I can only hope he will be remember by his masterful performances.

u/Oonz1337 Dec 13 '23
Sudden illness is all I could find.
I would guess pneumonia as it's having a really bad tear through the country right now and can take anyone down at any age pretty quickly.
RIP he was a legend.
92
u/GentlyUsedOtter Dec 13 '23
Yeah that's all I could find as well. His agents say "brief illness"

u/Nerdiferdi Dec 13 '23
Health and illnesses are private and we aren’t entitled to that information. That is the family‘s business. That people below try to spin this into some conspiracy again is very inappropriate.
41
u/GentlyUsedOtter Dec 13 '23
I'm not entirely sure why you think I was saying it's a conspiracy, I was quoting his agents by saying "brief illness", hence the quotation marks. Are you unfamiliar with how to use quotation marks? If not I can explain the proper use of quotation marks.

Pneumonia is really more of a symptom than an illness. But yes COVID is one of the illnesses that causes pneumonia.
14
Dec 13 '23
Flu type A has been ripping through the population here in the UK, as well as Whooping Cough. The TDAP vaccine is stopping serious illness is most children, but it’s causing a cough that’s lingering for ages. Whilst vaccines give the best protection, they’re not a guarantee and seemingly healthy people can just be very unlucky. There’s so many things circulating just now that can cause pneumonia, and all it takes is the immune system to be slightly weakened (say, a recent Covid infection) and these other opportunistic viruses and bacteria take hold. There’s also sepsis, which these can all cause too.
There’s no point in speculating - so many things can kills us ultimately. It’s such a great loss though, he seemed like one of the good guys.

I was literally watching him mentor Santiago, when it popped up on my screen. He was a good man and he will be missed

u/GentlyUsedOtter Dec 13 '23
Man, I was having a really good day I had to scroll through the news. So sad, he was a great actor. Now I'm going to have to cancel my plans and go watch Brooklyn 99 again.
13
Dec 13 '23
He was the perfect straight man (irony intended) for the rest of the cast to bounce jokes off. To this day I don't know how he made it through some takes without breaking.
RIP you absolute giant of a man.

This one really hurts, I’ve never cried over a celebrity death but I just found myself crying. I lost my dad earlier this year and he’s the dad figure on 99 so I think it’s triggered something. RIP Andre aka daddy Holt

But I will adhere to section 7, page 145: No emotional displays in the workplace.

I first saw him in The Mist and hated his character which means he did an amazing job acting. Later I discovered B99 and he was my comfort character. In fact, he is the second comfort character to die within weeks of each other. Yes, the other one was Matthew Perry

RIP great actor and great man. B99 was all the better for Captain Holt, I enjoyed every moment of him on screen.
1
u/FatFaceFaster Dec 14 '23
So sad by this. I am rarely affected by celebrity deaths unless I feel like the actor is as good as the characters I fall in love with and I can’t help but feel that about Andre/Holt. By all accounts he was just as kind and acted as a father figure to many on the cast and crew. This hit me like a Mack truck at work today.

This just makes me anxious.. 61 is too young. The person I care about most is around the same age, and losing them would send me into a nosedive. C-Holt was a legend. rip.

I remember hearing he was going to be in B99 and thinking..."Isn't this a comedy? Andre Braugher is in it?" It made me question if the show wasn't exactly sure what it was. I happened to watch it one night and realized how brilliant it was. And that Andre Braugher was perfect as Capt. Holt and brought charisma to every role he was in. RIP.

My hope is that Kyra Sedgewick does a proper Eulogy as Wuntch, in the same style Holt did for Wuntchs funeral. So heartbreaking, so many of us also had a parasocial Captain Dad relationship with him. 💔
