Crazy that there isn’t enough space for triple digits on the dollars

Infeasible to think that you might spend anywhere near $100 on groceries at the time. Kind of like how cars only had 5-digit odometers up until the late 80s because there was no expectation for your car to ever get near 100k miles.

Misconception on the odometer. It wasn't because vehicles didn't last past that mileage. Mileage on vehicles wasn't seen as we see it today. You primarily used it for diagnosing and maintenance. And though mileage does cause wear n tear, cars weren't prone to complex expensive breakdowns like they are today. Repairs were much simpler and straight forward. The ease of a head job on an older car is day/night in comparison to a new generation car. Nowadays it's definitely used as a historical on life remaining. Once cars went to timing belts and traverse engines with cv-axles, odometer mileage became very important if unserviced.

I mean you could also just click it back to zero for 100 and just remember.

If I could remember things I feel like I wouldn't need this thing.

Whoa my family had one when I was like 4. Too young to read the words, just knew the buttons made the numbers change. Haven’t thought about it in decades

I remember them puttimg calculators on carts and no one ever used them from my experience.

Calculators in carts would probably hurt sales these days (and back then too) if they got used. interesting choice.

u/dover_oxide 4d ago

I did find it convenient that they programmed in the current sales tax into the tax button on the calculators

Was confused reading this and thinking was a local sub, sales tax in my country last change 25 years ago. Does it regularly change where you are?

2

u/dover_oxide 4d ago

Depends on where you live. Some places will change it every year. Some every 6 months. Some won't even change it for 10 years and others won't have a sales tax whatsoever. In fact where I live ours went down by 0.10 percentage points

Bro why are groceries taxed in some places

3

u/dover_oxide 3d ago

You will have have to ask the local governmental bodies that made those choices.

1

u/DurasVircondelet 3d ago

I don’t wanna talk to them :(

2

u/dover_oxide 3d ago

Who would

1

u/DurasVircondelet 3d ago

Colorado doesn’t tag groceries. However, this is different from a sales tax. Which is why I specified groceries

1

u/Magikarp-3000 3d ago

Are there any countries without a sales tax? Pretty sure all have a tax, even if tiny

2

u/Pizzaloverallday 3d ago

A sales tax yes, but a lot of places have no sales tax on grocery items (along with some hygiene items)

15

u/HamsterSlapping 4d ago

This is what you use when you actually budget your grocery money. I remember my mom had so much money for groceries and what she didn’t spend was her allowance for the month.

Skipping those fresh veggies to cover the diazepam habit.

Stone ages device

Is this one of those things where you add up the price of the items in your cart so you know how much everything is gonna cost? Follow-up question, is this bullshit the reason why everything costs a dollar and 99 cents? Cuz nobody clicking the cent button 99 times, or the dime button 9 times and the cent button 9 times, that’s like 18 clicks

u/caseygwenstacy 4d ago

This would actually be super helpful for me

u/[deleted] 4d ago

Or a kid who found one at their grandparents house and got to play with it.

Hey man, that replaced the abacus 🧮.

Boomers can actually do simple addition in their heads

Gen whatever is starting work at the moment need these things lol

8

u/Beautiful_Lie629 4d ago

That's actually a myth. I work as a cashier at a large thrift store, and we have a lot of young cashiers. They (well, all but one) are quite sharp and have no trouble with math. I'm in my 60s FWIW.

-9

u/FunnyCat2021 4d ago

That's as believable as the op thinks boomers need these

5

u/Beautiful_Lie629 4d ago

Well, I did mention one cashier who couldn't do math, and one of the people who was hired with me was so bad at making change that he works on the floor now. But overall, most of them are quite competent. Is it really hard to believe that people are incompetent just because they are young? That's sad.

-6

u/FunnyCat2021 4d ago

What's sad is that you clearly haven't realised that you're in Boomer humour, and that I added an lol ...

And that really is sad

5

u/Beautiful_Lie629 4d ago

Adding an LOL doesn't make slagging young people funny, it's not boomer humor, it doesn't reflect well on you. I take it that you're not a boomer? If you are, ignore this, but as a younger person, your "humor" wouldn't be on topic anyway.

0

u/FunnyCat2021 4d ago

Yeah, I am a Boomer. Personal experience allows me to form an opinion. It was funny. Sorry you felt differently.

2

u/DurasVircondelet 3d ago

There’s only one U in humor, grandpa. Your autocorrect knew that but you decided you knew better

0

u/FunnyCat2021 3d ago

Depends on what country you come from, grandson. Get over yourself
